  1. Past hour
  2. Yeah, I don't read liner notes that were written for initial contemporary releases, as they by definition lack any critical perspective (they're meant to sell albums). I do read liner notes of historical reissues sometimes.
  3. Also the great record with Coleman Hawkins and Pee Wee Russell. And he was partly responsible for "The Sound of Jazz" the greatest jazz tv show ever. But I do remember some of his liner notes reading like they were just tossed off for the money.
  4. I remember attending a Nat Hentoff interview one year at IAJE and it was enjoyable.
  5. Today
  6. Me too. I have none of these tracks, so will order that CD.
  7. This is available on CD now. The sound is well done. The information on the CD is a bit sparse, but it sure sounds like these came from the original Boris Rose recorded source.
  8. Lester Young, Live at Birdland 1951-1952
  9. It's not listed yet in the detailed schedule but presumably this is an all day Sunday event.
  10. Oh well... My daughter pulled that Camden LP out of a Detroit area thrift store and gave it to me for my birthday last year. Haven't played it yet.
  11. Belmondo/Yusef Lateef “Influence” B Flat 2 cd set, disc 2
  12. Max Allan Collins and his books are guilty pleasures of mine.
  13. Duke Ellington and his Orchestra “Duke '56/'62 Volume 2” 2 LP Columbia, LP 1 Satisfying my itch to hear the Duke and his expensive gentlemen.
  14. Hentoff was an interesting guy. Thankful for his efforts in Candid Records, who put out some gems in their small catalog, including some of my favorite Cecil Taylor and Charles Mingus and that really good Booker Ervin album. And that's just off the top of my head.
  15. Having finished Moby-Dick, I read this brief but very useful book.
  16. It got colder overnight but so far no snow! I’m glad, my back may or may not get another day of rest and a respite from shoveling! Starting off the day with a soothing listen to Eliane Elias “Dreamer” Bluebird cd. Hard to believe this was recorded over 20 years ago. . . . Paulo Braga on drums really gives this one his special “feel.”
  17. In the top-10 from my "desert-island discs" collection. Even if Tatum piano lines as accompanist are sometimes "too intrusive", I also have this boxed set in high regard. Norman Granz's mission of extensively documenting Tatum in the "Solo" and "Group Masterpieces" sets is much appreciated. And +1 for the Tatum-Webster disc as a favourite. Currently listening to
