I am not really a fan of Michael Urbaniak. But when I saw his sidemen included Kenny Barron, Peter Washington and Kenny Washington, I wanted to hear this album.

It's always interesting to hear the Philadelphia Orchestra perform Russian repertoire.

Out to Lunch was done while Dolphy was under contract to FM Records, so I've always thought it was intended to be a one-off.

The date I have heard that is being hunted for is a live date shortly before Out To Lunch. Maybe it has been found. I am always the last to know. I doubt Dolphy was under contract with Prestige by then. I always wondered if the Blue Note date was a one-off, or if he was going to make another record for them which of course was never to be.

yeah, I would assume the reason for The Wire not getting reissued is that Denon doesn't have any interest. Dusted that LP off recently and it's a great date, but the audience might be smaller than, say, for an obscure but funky Jiro Inagaki album (and don't get me wrong, I like those too).

Agreed, still holding out hope that someone could get this out there. I would of course still kill for reissues of the Japanese albums, especially The Wire. I kind of can't believe those still remain untouched when so many other impossible JP grails have managed to come out. Regarding the discography, I did run into a bit of a wall myself personally. I have over 100 Lacy recordings, and a got to a point where most of what remains is either a reification of contexts I have in great number, or far too rare and expensive to pursue. As such it's been a number of years since I've added a title to the collection. Maybe the bug will come back to me again someday.

I can't even recall; it was years ago, but I don't believe it was the Douglas/FM recordings and rehearsals. FWIW I guess Concord aka Alchemy Copyrights owns the catalog, but I guess there are questions of payment going back many years. Will that get sorted? Think Zev can do it?

My take: If he issues an LP that I'd like to hear & have, I'll buy it. If he doesn't, I won't.

From my brief experience trying to help him, 'easily distractable' is the understatement of the year. Is this the Dolphy thing with Joe Chambers or something else? The tapes for the one with Joe have not been located yet, IIRC.

yeah, he wanted me to do some Dolphy research for him at one point and it wasn't clear to me that he had the rights to the music or even the information... he came off very high and mighty as well as being easily distractible. I was not impressed.

I'd think that the best way to promote shit is to simply get it right every time out. Or if something slips by, admit it and do what can be done to fix it. This guy just plows ahead with no acceptance of his failures whatsoever. I don't know the guy, but to me he projects an arrogance about his responsivity.
