  3. ... sad news - R.I.P.
  4. Not unexpected but very sad news. RIP.
  5. That sounds like the man I interviewed!
  6. That's a good one. 👍
  7. So sad to hear this news. R.I.P. But what a brilliant artist! I am so grateful for all of the MAGNIFICENT music he made! Some thoughts on Beirach from Ethan Iverson: https://open.substack.com/pub/iverson/p/tt-568-rip-richie-beirach?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

  10. Carlos Ward and his quartet performed at the Göttingen Jazz Festival on November 9, 1996, at midnight. After the gig, he wanted to stay at the theater, but his tour manager insisted to take him back to the hotel. I gave him a bottle of red wine to console him... R.I.P.
  11. January 27 Bob Mintzer - 1953
  12. We had about fifteen hours without snow! The. snow started back up about an hour ago, and should last through the afternoon and then though we’ll have very cold days we should get a respite for a spell from precipitation. Got to watch and listen thorugh the downstairs audio/visual system for a while and now I’m in front of the main system upstairs and listeneing to “Pictures of Heath” on Toshiba Super Bit Jazz Classic lp facsimile cd.
  13. Nonsense! No reason at all to avoid the subject here or to be reticent about it . It all connects up at some point. Militant purism is toxic, fuck that.
  14. I have my doubts about Henry McDode being a pseudonym for Hampton Hawes. If Hawes couldn't be credited for contractual reasons, what sense would it make to credit him for one session? The Lord Disco shows McDoide on a total of four sessions (I can't access it at this moment). One is from 1949: https://www.discogs.com/release/9147738-Big-John-And-His-Orchestra-Too-Late-Blues-Shindig
  15. I was just recently was him reminiscing the ECM albums he made. Some fascinating stories there:
  16. His music has always been something special. I first discovered him when he wrote the hauntingly beautiful instrumental "Broken Wing" for Chet Baker. Later his trio albums for the ACT Munich Label with violinist Gregor Hübner and George Mraz - "Round about Bartok", "Round about Monteverdi" , "Round about Mompou" - were standout chamber crossovers. Richard Alan Beirach surely was one of a kind - a stylistically highly original pianist, composer, and musician who played among others with Getz, Liebman, the Brecker Brothers. The last part of his life he spent in Germany, first he taught jazz piano at the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig. Then he lived with two befriended musicians on a farm in a village in rural southwestern Germany. RIP, Richie Beirach
  17. RIP
  18. That's too bad. RIP
  19. There may be some good Instagram channels that talk about this style that would give leads and some discussion. Other than access to musicians themselves I'm not sure of other options right now. Reddit sucks across nearly all music genres I've come to learn.
  20. January 27 Pheeroan AkLaff - 1955 Saw him with David Murray at the Göttingen Jazz Festival November 5, 2004. During soundcheck, he didn't want to wait for the drum throne, so he grabbed the piano bench, broke it, and sat on the floor - loud laughter ...
  21. Didn't know about this one, definitely would like to hear it, as well as a completed Concert in Japan by the New York Jazz Quartet.
