  1. Past hour
  2. I transitioned from Beatles-to-Henrix-to-Zappa with random but meaningful bumpings into Soul (which was a whole other story...) It was a window in time...jazz-rock was about to become fusion (but had not yet), the big bands were still going (on all guides), the avant-garde was rapidly evolving. Europe was teeming with Americans and natives clicking decoratively and together, and most importantly...so many major voices were still alive, gigging, and recording. And the reissues were just beginning to get rolling! I like to use Wayne Shorter to illustrate - just about a year in. I knew of Wayne from records by Blakey, Miles, and Weather Report. I was too dumb to realize that it was not basically all the same person. Silly me.
  3. Looking forward to the Pluribus finale.
  4. Mine too. That's a great CD (in my collection).
  5. Late

    Donald Byrd

  6. One of my favorite drummers:
  7. I'm a fan of the Roaratorio Sun Ra albums. That Sun Embassy is a good one. If I remember correctly it's a collection of recordings from Ra's compound after he would wake them up early in the morning to practice. Lots of percussion.
  8. So, my wife brought home (shhh, I know she's a secret horder) a box of weird-ass religious CD's, but I looked in the box anyway, and nestled in them was this CD: Oscar Peterson (not Cindi Lauper/Miles Davis), Time After Time. Looks like someone used it as a brillow pad, no case, scratched up, but I put it on (after dishwashing it) and who knew, it plays!!! Here's the jacket that should accompany the CD: Pleasant enough, but I still can't believe it played all the way through! Superior listening!
  9. Today
  10. Bob Wilber and Bechet Legacy “Live At The Vineyard” Challenge cd Bob and Randy are a great pairing and I’m enjoying this drummer-less quartet. Bass – John Goldsby Guitar – Mike Peters Soprano Saxophone, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone – Bob Wilber Trumpet – Randy Sandke
  11. While on this subject, anyone have tips for cleaning CD players? Mine is having issues reading discs consistently, skipping frequently. At first I thought it was the discs themselves but figured out it was the player.
  12. Excellent!!! Fascinating accounts, I was barely one years old!
  13. Yesterday
  14. But some of the Pablo box is mislabelled! Some is actually from Birdland?
  15. Enjoying this. Some people don't like Cowell's "later straight-ahead" albums as much as his earlier work. Sometimes they can be slightly anodyne (which is why I was apprehensive about this one on the Japanese Venus label*), but: (a) he never played in a very "out" style; (b) he still plays great on the later recordings. * Amusingly, discogs now censors the notoriously soft-porn Venus covers. You have to log in to view them. 🤣 With a funny West Side Story medley.
  16. That's my favorite Hawes album. I have a fair number of his recordings. Green Leaves of Summer comes to mind as next favorite. I don't have The Seance. Will re-listen to a few titles soon to see if my assessments have changed.
  17. It was 1971 when I started listening to jazzes, and a little bit of everything was out there, and that was what I liked. That turned into a lot of everything. Stories about people places and things real or not worlds known and unknown. I have few complaints about that, and there's still more and other musics, some are quite engaging!
  18. That George Coleman Octet record is excellent.
  19. Got a copy a few months ago, will listen again when I have my morning coffee. I have this version:
  20. Yeah, another minor masterpiece! I saw him live with Roy Campbell at CMA back in 2014, and I snapped a photo of him, but the flash went off, and he knew it was me and basically snarled at me with his signature headband and couldn't stop staring at me, like he was going to find me and kick my ass after the show. I was so embarrassed. I'm like did I just piss Henry Grimes off? Like here is what he looked like when I saw hin around that time (the original photo is gone)
  21. Narcissism (or the appearance thereof) is not political in and of itself.
  22. Looks like there is a fair amount of overlap between these Chant du Monde boxes and the Pablo box (which I have and love). It would be nice to have this stuff without buying part of it twice!
  23. Yes, please do. This is tough for any music lover, but please remember the forum rules. There are places to discuss political matters, although it leads nowhere in most cases.
  24. Photos e-mailed. Thanks. Here is some more information (I have now also added this info to album descriptions below): Stray Voltage and Excelsior Mill are still in original clear plastic outer sleeve with hype sticker attached. Cosmos is in original shrink wrap with shrink wrap open on side edge to retrieve record. Sun Embassy is only one without shrink wrap or plastic outer sleeve. Stray Voltage is 2lp and is a gatefold. All others are single records and are non-gatefolds. I played each record one or two times and all play perfectly without any issues. All are in NM/NM condition. Stray Voltage 2 LP, Modern Harmonic, 2025. RSD 2025. Color (orange frosted) vinyl. Gatefold. Still in original clear plastic outer sleeve w/hype sticker attached. Although a few Arkestra members appear on a few tracks, this is mainly just Sun Ra on a variety of electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Excelsior Mill Modern Harmonic, 2024. Color (violet) vinyl. Still in original clear plastic outer sleeve w/hype sticker attached. Another Sun Ra electronic keyboard and synthesizer workout. Cosmos Inner City, recent (perhaps 2010 or so) 180gram reissue Still in original shrink wrap but shrink wrap open on side edge to retrieve record.
