  1. Dennis Gonzalez posted this at Jazz Corner: My long-time playing partner and drumming legend, Alvin Fielder, who lives in Jackson, Mississippi, is suffering from acute heart problems, and has been bedridden for a month and a half or so. He was scheduled to play Vision Fest last June with Kidd Jordan and declined due to failing health. He is too weak to undergo the necessary open-heart surgery, but hopefully he will regain his strength soon...we need him back playing again. Alvin turned 73 in November of this past year and is known for his excellent drumming with the Roscoe Mitchell Quartet (just before it became the Art Ensemble and they all left for Paris without him), Braxton, John Cage, Sun Ra, Leroy Jenkins, and thousand of other musicians. Send up your prayers and meditations for his return to health, please!
  2. Shortly after issuing the Uptown Mingus set Collins' grandson emailed me to point out he was in the trumpet section of the SF big band sides included. He was proud of that.
  3. Am 65 years old. Had 2 tickets in my life. I drive really fast in Mustangs, Hondas, Audis, Mazdas, etc.
  4. I hope we aren't just left with blogs.
  5. I always thought of this recording as "two (really) white guys playing around". Interesting, nonetheless.
  6. SEK was a good friend. My first online loss was back in the days of usenet groups. I frequented rec.music.bluenote and had many exchanges with Dr Don Koldon. He was a recording engineer (check out his credits) and was living in Chicago. He left the board and kept up email conversations with me. He sent me some materials and then everything stopped. I eventually received and email from the family to let me know he had taken his life. Pay close attention to your comments.
  7. She should have said 45 minutes.
  8. Not Kansas Fields.
  9. Seth is long gone.
  10. That was my experience and the reason for my question.
  11. Jim, here's your chance to record with the stars.
  12. He started them. I think his father started MMO, but I'm not certain.
  13. I finally got around to following the info on the box. There was a sticker on directing you to interviews about the music on the official Davis site. It mentioned Pete Cosey and wanted to hear what he had to say. The site does not mention the Corner box and no way to access the interviews. Anyone know anything about this?
  14. John just read a quote Fred gave to Lazaro on WBLV. Nice. Fred chuckled and said it was true.
  15. Mislabeled! I thought I could buy the guy.
  16. Met him a number of times at record company conventions. Had a few conversations/beers over the years. Know some negative stories second hand. Nothing bad to report as far as I know directly, just not my type.
  17. Irv Kratka. Interesting dude.
  18. Found out about it too late to get tickets. Just wished Fred the best on the phone. Sorry we can't be there.
  19. Just called the studio and talked to Fred.
  20. Best to both of you. Our children are the reason for living. I envy the new experience.
