  1. Fantasy was sold because Saul was nearing the end of his life and it was time to put the estate in liquid form. That's the deal.
  2. My all time favorite.
  3. i don't know alto madness but another broadly related session which I like a lot is Paul Quinichette's "On the sunny side" which (besides Quinichette) has Jenkins in contrast to Sonny Red (so overall it's Pres Bird Bird...) (plus Curtis Fuller and a rhythm section of Mal Waldron, Doug Watkins and Ed Thipgen) That's a nice album. Interesting date but it leaves me with a lingering feeling of a bunch of guys moving in slightly different directions.
  4. The first eleven tracks of the cd duplicate the playing order of the lp. FWIW, the original Down Beat review gave the record 2 1/2 stars. Given the era AND the other (then) recent Ellington releases, I don't object too strenuously. I do like the record a bunch.
  5. Don't you mean "pie eye"?
  6. I still have my mono "six eye" from my high school days.
  7. Couple months ago Jerry told me they couldn't find the stereo tapes, so the cd will be mono. Nothing wrong with that.
  8. Didn't know you had a boy.
  9. Andy's is a fun room, always has great music, delicious and nutritious food, lots of interesting people, and it's only a few blocks away from the Jazz Showcase, where the Eric Reed trio will be hittin' ... Yeah, but it ain't in Philly. I think that's the point.
  10. Yup. Had the lp and now have a Japanese cd. It never "caught" me but I have it on principle. I have fond memories of the Soul Note date called "Trip to Prillargui". Also have fond memories of working with him at the Chicago Jazz Festival in the early '80s.
  11. What do you mean? Maybe something like: "I received this press release yesterday from Concord: KURT ELLING SIGNS EXCLUSIVE RECORDING AGREEMENT WITH CONCORD RECORDS Concord Records is proud to announce that Grammy-nominated singer Kurt Elling has signed an exclusive recording contract with the company. His Concord debut is scheduled to be released in early 2007."
  12. If you are "serious" about the music, why not buy a discography or discographies?
  13. How does the record sound? Is the music good? Are you looking for an address to return the record? -_-
  14. Seems a post was deleted.
  15. Yeah, I stumbled across him once.
  16. Don't they all look alike?
  17. Wow. The plot thickens... Or the thought plickens.
  18. From Bruyninckx: -Quiet nights- : Sergio Mendes (p) + unknown others poss Hollywood, 1967 2-40723 Quiet nights (Corcovado) Philips PHM200-263 2-40724 Infinity - 2-40725 Amor em paz - 2-40726 So danco samba - 2-40727 Morning of the carnaval - 2-40729 One note samba - 2-40730 The tower - 2-40731 O peixe - 2-40732 Abraco a Sergio - 2-40733 Desafinado - 2-40734 Meditação (Meditation) - 2-40735 Insensatez (How insensitive) - Note : Entire session also on Philips PHS600-263 (stereo). Sergio Mendez turned towards pop/disco music but some of his albums contained interesting piano solos the titles of interest are listed here but a full listing is outside the scope of this work.
  19. FWIW, I never saw the orange/black label but I have an orange/yellow - MG V-2008, Gene Krupa "Drummer Man" with Anita and Roy.
  20. What gave it away Chuck? Just that Chet Atkins vibe.
  21. Yes, it's Monk. They must be alternates, unless they recorded more tracks than made it to the original album? Probably same performances, just different titles. Not alternate takes.
  22. So, do you play country or western?
