  1. Glad to have you back. Too bad about the JC thread and I direct you all to a JC thread by dizmonk about the backorders on the Gillespie/Parker cd. An edit (mentioned) has taken place. Can't be too harsh on Lois (an old friend) but this is kinda sad.
  2. While Rudy does charge for his work, that's not why he does it. I know about 20 years ago he was offered $2,000,000 for his lot - they didn't want the studio.
  3. Not as easy as it looks.
  4. Is she Ross's daughter?
  5. The January '68 date with Charles Brackeen was issued under Brackeen's name on Strata East. I have more data on the other Frontier sessions (titles and timings) but can't locate my file. More later.
  6. I can supply information for the 2nd entry - Cherry/Grimes/Blackwell. This was recorded in Atlantic's studio in NYC on November 29, 1961. 1. The Idiot (Coleman) 4:56 2. Harlemite (Cherry) 8:34 3. Black Elk Speaks (Cherry) 7:10
  7. I'll sleep on it. This will take some thought and I just returned from the beer tent.
  8. WTF?
  9. Me too.
  10. The GNP is a ripoff - it contains late 30's transcription sides with applause dubbed in. ← Gene Norman was in town 20+ years ago and I called him on the Tatum records. He feigned innocence. Geez!
  11. Not sure of recordings from the "old days" (other than private things) but Terry said John gave him a recent solo cd. John lives and plays in Fort Bragg, California and you could contact him if you want to.
  12. Different guy. John was a friend of mine and one of the few white players to work with the AACM guys at the time. He lives in California now and was in Chicago last week. John Litweiler and Terry Martin spent some time with him and report he's doing fine.
  13. You are making the traditional stop in Whitehall on the way aren't you?
  14. Probably 'cause you called him Uncle Scum.
  15. I disagree-- unless you make large BMG orders, yourmusic is generaly cheaper. Guy ← Me too. I had been a BMG customer for about 10 years and dumped them.
  16. The "Smith/Kowald/Sommer" group made 2 lps for FMP - Touch the Earth (1979) and Break the Shells (1981). IIRC, FMP has issued a cd called Break the Shells combining the 2 lps BUT omitting the "title tune" (Break the Shells) of about 18 minutes. Whatever, this is great stuff and I recommend getting the available material.
  17. Geez, I remember the days when the answer would have been a song title. Later it became an lp side, then a cd. Now it's a friggin' box set. Does anyone listen to single cuts anymore?
  18. Yeah--only Nessa Records promos allowed. ← Hey look, this topic has been up for 8+ hours and no one payed attention. I brought it back up. I'm an "old time merchandiser". Where's the finger symbol?
  19. What a wonderful (Freudian) typo.
  20. Is this some dutch female I don't know?
  21. Don't know what the hell happened but I spent a great deal of time researching my correction to this post and now it is gone. Here is a short summation. In the '70s BN issued a 2 lp set called Back From The Gig under Ervin's name. It included the "soon to be released" material (Ervin, Woody Shaw, Kenny Barron, Jan Arnett and Billy Higgins) AND a Horace Parlan date reissued on cd as Happy Frame of Mind with Ervin, Johnny Coles, Grant Green, Butch Warren and Higgins.
  22. Left out of the first session listed disco is Zonky. IIRC, From Hackensack to Englewood Cliffs included the first session plus 2 previously unissued tracks from a couple of weeks later.
  23. I heard they are all mastered from cassettes in Cuscuna's private collection.
