You will have to give a rundown of the show because I am seeing them on the 16th! In one word impressive. Probably the best show outside the jazz idiom that i attended this year. I'll tell you more later. First of all the first act was a very fine band called the Budos http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/b/...nd-st2005.shtml Quite frankly i already had my money's worth with this band. Were they listed as being on the bill before the show? The First Avenue site doesn't have any opening acts listed for the Friday show. For about a month I have been hoping Budos band would open, since they are on the same label and include many of the same members. -

I second your evaluation. When JC (or as I like to call him Just Crazy) was with the Twins his slide increased with each season and at times, toward the end, with each game. He became difficult for Gardenhire to control. The pattern was that he was going to blow the lead when he used in relief and would throw a tantrum when he had to be pulled. I think the final straw was when he walked off the field before Gardenhire had the chance to take the ball from him. -

Tonight it was Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott perfoming Schubert, Shostakovich, Piazzola, Gismonti/Carneiro, and Franck. Tomorrow night it is the Meat Puppets. -
I just came back from seeing it. I had a great time watching it and seeing the story develop. Some people seemed a little disappointed (it was really packed for a 1:40 showing) but maybe they have never read any Cormac McCarthy! Seriously, the actors, direction, and landscape seemed perfect. Has anyone had a chance to see this? I think it is currently in limited release for a week or two.

Hank Thompson dies of lung cancer at 82 By MATT CURRY, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 48 minutes ago DALLAS - Hank Thompson has died of lung cancer just days after canceling his tour. The country singer was 82. Thompson died late Tuesday at his home in the Fort Worth suburb of Keller, said spokesman, Tracy Pitcox, who is also president of Heart of Texas Records. "He was battling aggressive lung cancer," Pitcox said Wednesday in a statement. "He remained conscious until the last couple of hours and passed away peacefully at about 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday night surrounded by his friends and family." The last show Thompson played was Oct. 8 in his native Waco. That day was declared "Hank Thompson Day" by Gov. Rick Perry and Waco Mayor Virginia DuPuy. Fans loved Thompson's distinctive gravelly voice and his musical style, a mix of honky-tonk and Western swing. He was named to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989. His first recording was "Whoa, Sailor" in 1946. That year, he started a band called the Brazos Valley Boys, which won Billboard magazine's touring band of the year award 14 consecutive times. Thompson had 29 hits reach the top 10 between 1948 and 1975. Some of his most famous songs include "Humpty Dumpty Heart" and "A Six Pack to Go." His album "The Wild Side of Life" reached No. 1 in 1952. It inspired a famous "answer song" written by J.D. Miller, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels." Recorded by Kitty Wells, the song was the first No. 1 hit by a woman soloist on the country music charts and made Wells a star. Thompson grew up a fan of Gene Autry, which fueled his love of the guitar. By the time he finished high school, he was playing on a local radio show, where he was featured as "Hank the Hired Hand." He served in the Navy, and studied electrical engineering at Southern Methodist University, the University of Texas and Princeton. Thompson considered a career in engineering, but remained in show business. He caught the attention of Tex Ritter, who helped him get a contract with Capitol Records. Pitcox said Thompson requested that no funeral be held. A "celebration of life," open to fans and friends, will be held Nov. 14 at Billy Bob's Texas, a Fort Worth honky-tonk. Survivors include his wife, Ann. He had no children.

I just heard on Yahoo that he died of lung cancer. He was 82. I keep meaning to pick up the Bear Family set but I will have to spin the greatest hits I have. I saw him at the Minnesota State Fair a few years back.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
HolyStitt replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The jfk tribute came off a lot better than I had anticipated. I liked the archival speech introductions that set the theme for each song...'Artists' rightful place' was pretty awesome, imo (both the sentiment of JFK's speech and the music) I agree. Never having heard the Kennedy thing before, I would say it's pretty good, better than I had expected. Overall the whole set is very strong and I really like it, though there are parts of discs 5 & 6 with Jimmy Smith which seem a tad weaker than the rest. On the other hand that's what you get with "complete" sets and some of the stuff with Smith is really good. Edited for spelling Sorry about the delay in responding. I was pleasantly surprised how good the JFK stuff was. At first I was a little nervous when the speeches came in but they seemed to compliment the music and vice versa. Now I can't imagine the music without the spoken parts A very enjoyable set. Now I am playing the first disc of the Farmer/Golson/Jazztet set. -

I didn't realize a good fit for the family was code for a city that has a team that has a decent chance of making it to the playoffs! -

I agree, minus the purse of course! Seriously, this play in the 2004 ALCS, the play earlier this year when he yelled "got it," and his post season numbers are all I think of when I hear all of the hype. ... but then again this is coming from the fan of a team that's collective payroll a few years back was below $30 million. -

Coco is affordable to most teams but I can't imagine the Twins feeling that way. For a while the Twins have been stating in the press that they have a surplus of outfielders, either coming through the system or at the majors, so I can't imagine they would be excited or interested in the numbers in Coco's contract. Unless of course he was a player thrown with a large mix of prospects nowhere near free agency. On the other hand, maybe they keep publically stating that they have a surplus of outfield prospects so people in town will think they know what they are doing when they let Hunter go. -
I have watched every episode this season and it seems to be at a low. I loved the past seasons but this season is the first time I haven't laughed once while watching the show. 30 Rock on the other hand has been great. A little off topic but has anyone watched Ricky Gervais' most recent show Extras?

So far it has been a nice evening spent with the Oliver Nelson The Verve/Impulse Big Band Studio Sessions. I have heard the first 3 CDs for the first time and I am about to start the fourth. I am a little nervous about the JFK tribute but I am excited about the Pee Wee Russell material coming after. -
I believe they retailed for $108. Doesn't $18 an LP sound right? That would be correct I think. Mosaic brochure #15 announces the release of the Lee Morgan set - the 6 Q-LP version was available for $90. By the time that Mosaic brochure #18 was printed, the LP set had sold out. Thanks for the info. Where they priced the same as the CDs?

I played it last week at work & enjoyed it, though I will have to bring it home to get a better feel for it. I am seeing her & the band in concert next month at First Avenue for the first time. -
I had to look twice to make sure but it appears that Garnett only had 9 points. ...and Paul Pierce only had 8 points. The Celtics look good on paper but I'm still not completely convinced that Garnett, Allen, and Pierce will mesh all that well together. It is still early but that was my feeling as well. Garnett hasn't had many games were his point total was so low. I hope they figure everything out because I figured I would follow them this season instead of the Timberwolves!

True Blue Music (Mosaic's retail arm) also has it in stock but they want $149.99. Once plus about buying from would be they could tell you if they actually had one in stock or not. -

It was announced that they were going to play a show here (Minneapolis) at the end of the month but nothing ever came to be. Now I am debating on driving down to Chicago for one of the three shows. I would love to see Bob again this year but he doesn't seem to be changing the set list around much the past few years, though I now hear he is playing guitar again on a few songs. Elvis on the other hand has really been changing his set lists up. I have seen him 3 times in the last year, in three different contexts, and only heard 3 songs more then once! -
