I would prefer it if someone would try to *elevate* the quality, not pander to the juvenile audience. Plenty of kids LOVED the original movies - as I read in an online review talking about Jar-Jar Binks: ----- His head gets caught in an electronic field, his foot gets caught in the stirrup of some large beast, he describes being in trouble as "deep doo doo," and even manages to step in some of the same while walking around in Mos Eisley Spaceport. Therein lies a key difference between this film and one of its predecessors. In STAR WARS, we had Obi-Wan telling us Mos Eisley was a "wretched hive of scum and villainy." In THE PHANTOM MENACE, we get doo doo. ------ Give kids something worthy and they WILL like it. You don't need to go for the lowest common denominator. It works in movies, music, whatever. I've seen it myself. Mike

Well, if basic multiplication counts, then yes. But remember the audience for this stuff. ======================== Three is a magic number Yes it is, it's a magic number Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity You get three as a magic number The past and the present and the future Faith and hope and charity The heart and the brain and the body Give you three as a magic number It takes three legs to make a tripod or to make a table stand It takes three wheels to make a vehicle called a tricycle Every triangle has three corners Every triangle has three sides No more, no less You don't have to guess When it's three you can see it's a magic number A man and a woman had a little baby Yes, they did They had three in the family And that's a magic number 3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30 3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30 Now, the multiples of three Come up three times in each set of ten In the first ten you get 3, 6, 9 And in the "-teens" ten it's 12, 15, and 18 And in the "twenties" you get 21, 24, 27 And it comes out even on 30 Now multiply backwards from three times ten 3 x 10 is 30 3 x 9 is 27 3 x 8 is 24 3 x 7 is 21 3 x 6 is 18 3 x 5 is 15 3 x 4 is 12 And 3 x 3 is 9 And 3 x 2 is 6 And 3 x 1 is 3 of course Now dig the pattern once more Three! 3-6-9 Twelve! 12-15-18 Twenty-one! 21-24-27, 30 Yeah, thirty Now multiply from 10 backwards 3 x 10 is 30 (keep goin') 3 x 9 is 27 3 x 8 is 24 3 x 7 is 21 3 x 6 is 18 3 x 5 is 15 3 x 4 is 12 And 3 x 3 is 9 And 3 x 2 is 6 And 3 x 1... What is it? Three! Yeah... That's a magic number A man and a woman had a little baby Yes, they did They had three in the family That's a magic number ======================== Mike

The fundamental flaw was the introduction of pop culture into the movies. It's out of place and doesn't belong. The canteen band in the first movie was about as much as I could take - and even that wasn't really the stuff of today, because it was swing, not funk, R&B - like what has been put into the revised third movie. I have blocked out a lot of the last two movies, though I did see a bit of the fourth movie on TV a few days ago. Two-headed sportscasters? Give me a break. That's just stupid and juvenile. Lucas is so concerned with updating his movies - yet he puts in stuff that just immediately removes the magic and dates them. The past two movies will never be in the same class as the first two. The third seems to be worse now (another one that was on TV recently) - I don't remember it being quite that bad in the theater, but it was a long time ago, in a..... Oh enough. Mike

Three *is* well-established as a very significant number - come on, Holy Trinity anyone? And the song does lay out some of the other things: a father, mother, baby; faith, hope, charity; etc. Of course, numerologists could make the case that any number is a magic number. Mike

The annoying thing is that Sony could do a list of this quality and quantity every six months. We could be hanging on their reissue series the way we used to for the Verve Elites, or the Blue Note Connoisseurs. Mike

There's about a three year difference 1958 (Golson) to 1961 (Jones). Can't really say whether the single came out before the LP or after - but maybe Blues March on the single was just an error someone made. Mike
-
This site has information that contradicts Lord about the contents of PJ 29. It also says that Sad March and Blues March are the same thing. http://mitglied.lycos.de/condouant/carmell1.html Mike

Yes, this is quite clearly laid out in the notes to the Riverside box. Four-string tenor guitar at age 12, six-string and amp purchased after first child born - Wes actually aged 20, not 19. Brother Monk Montgomery: Wes "was doing a good job on guitar by the time he was 12 or 13." Widow Serene Montgomery: "He was always a musician, but he wasn't playing like when he was older. When he had that 4-string guitar, he would play a little while and then ride his bike or play football. He would only talk to us so long before he'd go off with his box." Mike

There are a number of places to hear Tootie tootle the flute - all from the 1970s period. One of the tracks on "Marchin' On" by the Heath Brothers comes to mind where Jimmy and Albert both play flutes, then on Kenny Barron's Peruvian Blue, and he also played it when with Yusef Lateef. See my Kenny Barron discography (check personnel index to find dates with AH on flute). Mike

Well, I'm more likely to trust the Montgomery family's account of Wes starting at age 12 than Herb Alpert. Mike

Until someone comes back with concrete info courtesy of Sony, it's all speculation. Until the Legacy reissue of The Jazz Messengers, no one knew about some of those bonus tracks. Why couldn't such a thing happen again with Drum Suite? As for Stepping Stones, the band was recorded over two days at the Vanguard. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that something other than Escape Velocity could be added. Think of the Dexter Gordon Live at Carnegie that came out MUCH expanded. Am I wrong in remembering that there was talk (with Cuscuna as source?) about an expanded Stepping Stones a number of years back? As for Manhattan Symphonie, I'd be quite happy with the straight album, but discographies list several CBS sessions with unissued stuff, including "Secret Love" from the same quartet session as the issued "As Time Goes By". I'd have to check, but I'm not sure we've seen all the stuff originally on Great Encounters - some became the Carnegie record, some were bonus tracks on Sophisticated Giant. Mike
-
Half and half, but I think even the drum suite is less of a percussion-only thing than Holiday or Orgy. The Messengers stuff is the McLean, Hardman band. Mike
-
It's about time!!!! This is stuff that should have been reissued in the US in definitive editions 20 years ago. So much is long-awaited - the Gordon, the Jamal, the Shaw - my next question is whether any others will have additional material. I've got almost everything already in LP or import CD, but if you're offering bonus tracks on something like Drum Suite, I'm there! Mike
-
Be aware that Tootie Heath also played flute (wooden, I believe) with the Heath Brothers. Sometimes both he and Jimmy would play together. Mike
-
Very interesting! And that date is good to know too - Stitt's other Wingate stuff has been listed as "1950s?" which has got to be wrong. Mike
-
Google - "stitt's groove" - 9 results. Check 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Mike

I see 4 or 5 folks listing the Marr/Stitt single online. As low as $6. I kind of think they are different tunes. No idea whether Stitt and Marr actually play together. Mike
