I watched the whole thing last night in 5.1 The surround mix is nice and sounds natural, no instrument placement gimmicks. I really enjoyed most of the performances - it was interesting to SEE the music. I think my favorite tracks are Moanin' and Summertime. I was cracking up at Charles Lloyd - the way he was flopping around. I liked the intros between tracks, I thought they were really well done. Does anyone know the name of the guy who did the voiceovers? Sounds like the voice of the old Blue Note Radio. I couldn't find his name anywhere in the credits. The extras were ok. I've got the cover art books and Wolff's photography book so there was really nothing new there. It's still great to see that they took the time to add extras. The only drawback for me is that they decided to end the DVD with Cecil Taylor banging random piano keys for twelve and half minutes. For me the concert will always end with Turrentine, Smith, Burrell, and Tate playing "Scratch My Back." Based on this effort, I'd like to see more DVDs from Blue Note.

Mark my words. History will look back on this as the event that sparked eventual world domination by the cyborg monkey.

Thanks Rooster, JSngry, relyles, and DrJ for the recommendations. I just ordered Grass Roots. I heard a few clips over at Amazon and that's the kind of Hill I was looking for.

I wouldn't consider myself an Andrew Hill fan. Although prior to Passing Ships my only exposure to Hill was Point of Departure. I am really enjoying Passing Ships, especially the title track. What would else should I be checking out? (more like PS and less like PoD).

I ordered Sonic Boom along with all of the other Conns in this set. Most of these discs were new music to me and I was honestly expecting "just another Morgan date." I now realize my folly in ever combining "just another" with "Morgan date." There is some very beautiful playing by Morgan on this one. I also like the missing piece of The Procrastinator--which I put off buying for the longest time . I am going to play them back-to-back when I get home.

Sorry about that Soul Stream. I'm sending speedy restock and shipping vibes your way. I received my package of all 6 today. I placed my order on 9/13. Do you know when you got yours in? Could it be there are more of us out there than we know? Are we growing in number? Can we rise up and one day retake our rightful place at the top of the music world..... B) Or are we just the poor forgotten minority who has to fight for the few scraps that the retailers see fit to throw us...

Sorry, nothing for the Conns, but Borders does have an in-store promotion going on: 20% Off Selected Jazz - Offer valid 9/29-10/26/03, in stores only. This seems to include the RVGs and the Verve Digipaks.

Has anyone ordered from Daedalus Music? Are they good, bad, or ugly? And from reading the previous posts I didn't see much on the Past Perfect single discs. Do they vary in sound quality from disc to disc or are they uniformly good, mediocre, or bad?

Mulligan, Patton, Chambers
mgraham333 replied to Free For All's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My order arrived today. I got the Mulligan (#99/7500), the Chambers (#492), and what should have been the Patton - but got a Bennie Green instead (already have it) I called Mosaic right away and they were very apologetic and said they would immediately ship the Patton and send retun postage for the duplicate Green. I was a little disappointed. Until now I've had a perfect record with Mosaic. I'm happy with how they responded though. Of course with the Chambers and Mulligan sets I'll have more than enough music to hold me over for the replacement Patton to arrive. I'm listening to the Chambers right now and it's got some great material I'm hearing for the first time. -
Stone classic. Buy it YESTERDAY. I bought it today, is that ok? Let me answer my own question. It's more than OK. It's pretty dang good. Nancy Wilson has a great voice and the Adderleys (yep, brother Nat is there too) are in fine form. The first 7 of 12 tracks have Nancy Wilson and the rest have: Cannonball, alto Nat, cornet Joe Zawinul, piano Sam Jones, bass Louis Hayes, drums

What's this "shaving" you speak of...?

I'm ususally not crazy about the jazz "with voices" genre, but there is something about Byrd's A New Perspective that gets me every time. Does anyone have any comments about I'm Trying To Get Home Here is the AMG review (2 stars): A follow-up to trumpeter Donald Byrd's hit A New Perspective, this LP (not yet reissued on CD) also features an eight-voice choir conducted by Coleridge Perkinson and arrangements by Duke Pearson and the leader. The vocalists have a larger role than in the earlier date and Byrd's quintet (with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and pianist Herbie Hancock) is augmented by organist Freddie Roach, guitarist Grant Green and a dozen brass players. But despite some strong moments, the date (which resulted in no real hits) does not quite reach the heights of A New Perspective although it has plenty of interesting moments. — Scott Yanow Does anyone know where I can find some sound clips of ITTGH?

I run ZoneAlarm Pro as well and have not had to disable windows messenger. I haven't tried many software firewalls, but would have no problems recommending this one.

Mulligan, Patton, Chambers
mgraham333 replied to Free For All's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I ordered the Selects and the Mulligan at the same time so I guess I'll be waiting a bit longer for mine. Damn you Gerry! You better be worth the wait. -
Berigan - did you work in either of the Tulsa stores... I've seen the person you so vividly described. I do my best not to be the Thurston Howell lll character. But I will make a fuss if coupons or discounts...or in some cases...regularly marked prices are not applied properly. As far as "redesigning their coupons to avoid ambiguities" goes. I've made my case that this coupon as attached in this board via PDF is not "official" The Borders logo and the barcode are legit, but all other text and layout were modified. Every other coupon that has been posted in this thread since I started it has had the official Borders look. In fact, they are usually linked directly from the Borders servers or copied as is and hosted elsewhere (as I do when I post them). With all of that said, it should be about time to see another real coupon soon....at least a 20% - which, not as good as 40% is still better than a kick in the crotch!
-
If you take a look at the PDF of this 40% coupon and compare it to previous coupons, you'll notice that only the barcode and the Borders logo match. The instructions and all other text have obviously been recreated...obviously in an attempt to remove the restrictions that should be part of the coupon. If you're able to use the coupon without question, that's fine. It's Borders responsibility to police its coupon program. But making a fuss and pointing to the lack of restrictions on the manufactured coupon is taking it a bit far. I redeem almost every legitimate Borders coupon that is sent to my email address (often more than once) but decided not to try this one because 1) it looked manufactured when I saw it. 2) reading the linked message board and seeing the failed attempts at redemption 3) abuse of programs always brings about their demise. Just my $0.02

I saw the Bill Charlap trio at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago on 9/14/03. I stayed for both of the evening sets and was very impressed with their playing. I was familiar only with their Blue Note CDs and was expecting a very mellow and laid back performance. But these guys can cook when they want to. Peter Washington (bass) had a solo in a Cole Porter number that made MY fingers hurt. Kenny Washington's (drums & no relation to Peter) brush work was like that of a master painter. Bill Charlap has a wonderful touch. I had a great view of his hands the whole night and his fingers seem to dance above the keys. Everyone on stage seemed to be having a pretty good time. It was the final evening of their week at the Jazz Showcase and they went out with a bang. I had a chance to chat briefly with each of the band members (getting cds autographed) and each of them seemed like very nice guys. I hope to seem them play again sometime.

Handles you thought about using......
mgraham333 replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Not so much for a message board, but I like the handle, "a little girl", for online gaming, especially in games where combat is involved. Imagine the on-screen game updates, "Player X was killed by a little girl" or "Player X killed a little girl." Funny, sick, wrong?
