I wasn't impressed by Aldana when I saw her last year and would probably avoid seeing her again unless I wanted to really see a sideman or other band also on the bill (i.e., she opened for Kenny Barron, a favorite of mine, when I saw her). On the other end of the spectrum, I really enjoyed Kris Davis with Mike Formanek last month and would go out of my way to see her. Chris Potter is also a must-see live, IMO.

I found out recently that unsung bassist Lisle Atkinson passed away on March 25th. I'm familiar with him through his excellent work with Richard Wyands, Norman Simmons and Frank Strozier, but he also recorded with Horace Parlan, Nina Simone and Betty Carter, among many others. It's a shame that his death wasn't widely reported at the time. Thank you for the music, Mr. Atkinson, and rest in peace.

This is an album I don't have, but is there a reference to Roach playing chess in the liner notes?

Found for $1 yesterday. Fun stuff.

The great Canadian clarinetist/composer/arranger is 96 today. Here's wishing him a happy birthday.

They are also supposed to be playing Cleveland on Tuesday, which will make 3 appearances within a year or so. I saw them the first time and enjoyed it but couldn't make their second show because I was in Columbus seeing Amir ElSaffar. The gig is no longer listed on the venue's website, however. I don't know if I'll be able to attend, but it'll be a good one (assuming they are still coming).

With a trip to Princeton Record Exchange looming, I visited a record store in Pittsburgh and stuck to a budget. For $14.92 after tax, I bought: Hal Russell NRG Ensemble - The Hal Russell Story Sheila Jordan and Harvie S. - Songs from Within Clare Fischer - Out of the Blue Milo Petersen and the Jazz Disciples - Jazz Dignitaries Amina Claudine Myers - Jumping in the Sugar Bowl Dan Haerle/Jack Mouse/Bob Bowman - The Truth of the Matter After what has been a long day, it was nice to come home with a modest stack of music I'm excited to hear.

Oh, man. What a lineup!

Man, you could have become a subscriber for $23 more, getting every Greenleaf album for stream and (lossless) download. I didn't realize until yesterday what a subscription involved.

FS: Two Partial Mosaics (Reduced)

Bumped with price reductions. -
Tootie Heath is 84 today. I hope he has had a wonderful day. I'll be sure to listen to Percy Heath's A Love Song, a gem with some fine drumming by Tootie, soon.

Riverside - The New National Anthem: This is the second Riverside album, a Carla Bley tribute.

Bumping this for the last day of the sale.

At the 2017 Detroit Jazz Fest, vocalist George V. Johnson Jr. did vocal versions of Mobley tunes with Benny Golson joining him on one tune.

The Five Spot material from Disc 1. Despite having been fortunate enough to see Weston 4 times (solo, duo, working group and big band), I barely had any of his music. I finally grabbed this in April and am working my way through it.

The Jazz Couriers - The First and Last Words: One of my favorite recent purchases.

Help Me Understand the Art Blakey Drum Albums
Justin V replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Artists
I didn't know that Chico did a solo album. That'd have to be good. -
Once again. I need to revisit my other Dave Douglas albums. Ths album is a Jimmy Giuffre tribute, with the follow-up being a Carla Bley tribute. I remember buying Chet Doxas' excellent Sidewalk Etiquette after hearing that he and his brother were working with Douglas, so I'm glad that the Greenleaf sale finally prompted me to buy both Riverside albums.

Purchased through the Greenleaf $3 sale:

Greenleaf is having a $3 CD Sale on 16 albums through the 31st. I already had the Greg Ward and Matt Ulery albums (having purchased the Greg Ward album the night before the sale started at a great gig by his Rogue Parade). I ended up picking up both albums by Riverside, the group with Dave Douglas, Steve Swallow and brothers Chet (saxophone/clarinet) and Jim (drums) Doxas. It is a good opportunity to try out some new music for a low price. With the store being through Bandcamp, you can get instant gratification by downloading or streaming your purchases, too.

I have two partial Mosaics for sale. They each come with the CD-sized booklet listing personnel. Prices include stateside shipping. Any scratches do not affect play or ripping, but I could give detailed descriptions upon request. Payment via PayPal friends and family, with the proceeds going to my toddler's college fund. Buck Clayton - The Complete CBS Jam Sessions, Discs 1 and 2 $12 (originally $20) Stan Kenton - The Complete Capitol Studio Stan Kenton 1943-47, Discs 4-7 $20 (originally $30): The booklet has a finger bend from where someone got it out of the case.

I somehow don't have much Ammons in my collection beyond Groovin' with Jug and some work with Stitt. I should rectify that.

I am in a Mabern mood and hadn't listened to this in a few years. I'd love to know whatever became of Keel.
