  1. as long as she doesn't try to give the new baby a haircut you're ok - I'd come visit but I remember when my aunt had a new baby and every time she saw my father she screamed - I'm afraid it may run in the family - I like babies - and I've come to the conclusion in my old age, finally, that families are good - congrats, Jim and Alison -
  2. I just hope they remember to put 'em in a rusty box -
  3. celebrate with some Swiss Kriss - but don't go too far afterwards -
  4. it's not a good thing, though I've always felt the IAJE to be something of an uniformed dinosaur - though in 2001 or so I did go to one of their conferences, and it wasn't too bad - I just remember when, in the late 1970s, Al Haig asked me to do a mailing to various IAJE people to try to get in the conference, to do clinics, anything - we sent about 250 letters - with not a single response - I made lots of follow up phone calls, but these guys were cluless - "Al Haig? Who'd he work with? Charlie Parker? Hey, can you get us him instead?" (exaggerating only slightly)
  5. terrible thing and another part of the Yuppie destruction of Manhattan - I've recently been in touch with Downtown Music Gallery because my cd is selling well there; those guys are honest and responsive - where are people like Mayor Bloomberg? no joke, this is another nail in the coffin of indigenous urban culture, but I doubt if anything will change -
  6. and I'll see if I can get Sonny Williams for the session - if I can find him -
  7. you've made me a happy man, thinking about analog - i recently did some quick saxophone recording on an old tascam, 1/4 inch, no noise reduction - too much noise for release, but the sonic depth of field just cannot be matched by digital - let me know if you wanna do a remote recording in Maine -

    Jutta Hipp

of course I remember the last record she made; the title itself indicates her weariness with the whole scene: "Jutta 'nother Piano Trio Album"
  9. seance tonight - my place, 3 am - bring your own ouija board - we're gonna get this all straightened out, once and for all -
  10. Harris was one of the musicians I knew well when I lived in NYC in the 1970s (I wrote the first piece that ever appeared about him in Downbeat, around 1976), but I've lost touch (I last went to see him about the year 2000, I would say) - his drummer Leroy Williams used to live in my neighborhood on the West Side, and worked for a while in a great trio at the West End with Bob Neloms and Percy France which I set up (and which Phil Schapp later took credit for, oh well) - I first got to know Barry when he was the Sunday pianist at Bradley's in the 1970s (though I first saw him at Jimmy's with Wilbur Little in the early 1970s) - he worked at Bradley's with Hal Dotson. Al Haig used to come in to see him (this was also the place where, prior to Barry, Jaki Byard was the Sunday pianist; one night he was blasting away when in walks Monk and Mingus, together! strange evening; Monk kept walking over and whispering in Jaki's ear, Mingus sat down and had a huge steak dinner) - I hope Barry is well, I know he had a stroke some time ago, he's a great guy and a charismatic, deep musician. Hear him on the right night and it is an experience like no other -
  11. as long as nobody says anything bad about Harriet Cadena -
  12. Jim, have you tried running the Scully at 15 ips with no noise reduction? I find personally that DBX kind of kills the analog advantage - if the tape is wide enough noise levels might be ok -
  13. ever heard of Sonny Williams?
  14. ever heard of sonny williams?
  15. I can't remember who I paid it to, but I actually had to pay for rights to that photo - I think I found it originally in the Al Rose N.O. Memories book -

    Jutta Hipp

sometime in the 1990s Marian McPartland told me that Hipp was working as a painter and living in a loft, I think in Queens (maybe Long Island City); she gave me her phone number, as I wanted to talk to her for my 1950s jazz book. I spoke to Hipp once and she was very nice and completely willing to talk, though I'm sorry to say she died before we got together - but I got no sense that she was unwilling to deal with her past -
