and since I can't give up anything completely, I will add that it would be preferable to me, whichever way this event goes (if it goes) that it not be just another gig - I just think, given the wide range of interesting people and musicians assembled here, given the brains and the talent, given the possible locale of Chicago (a hipper town than any place I have lived recently) that we attempt to make it just a little bit more interesting and a little less jazz-provincial. but that's just my opinion - Jim, what do you think? I'm getting lonely...

it is interesting because a brief perusal of internet hits finds much admiration for her as a teacher and as a person - I just recall my friend (a brilliant jazz pianist, not especially well known but I don't want to mention his name without his permission, and he now lives in Portugal), who is not Jewish, found her - 32 years ago - to have made comments that he felt were very distasteful - all I will add is that there is a lot of genteel anti-semitism that existed particularly among Eastern Europeans and Russians of that generation (I am assuming without perusing other posts here that she was Eastern European or Russian, but I may be wrong) and which Jews may be more sensitive to than non-Jews, and that relates to the whole WWII Nazi-occupation-collaboration-Stalin pact experience both as cause and effect (as in guilt, defensiveness, post-War rationale) -

well, normally I disagree with everybody, but I will blow any way the wind blows here, as I don't want to ask anyone to do anything that they do not want to do - sigh... I will only say that, given the state of the jazz world I saw this (as did Jim, I think) as a way, in this rapidly consolidating musical world, for independent thinkers to present a world view that stands in contrast to the usual jazz crap - and I will avoid being specific just because I think each of us can think of one aspect of the jazz world that has basically turned to crap, even, to my way of seeing things, some of the better and potentially more serious approaches have been eroded by conventional ways of doing things, conventional wisdom, conventional approaches - but, obviously it's an idea that works only in my head, so I suppose it will stay there - surrounded by lots of other lonely and impractical ideas - so, let's start over - should this, if it exists, be strictly a social/musical event? Should I quit now while I'm behind? As Mussolini said, I bow to the will of the people (as long as my kid gets to play in the rhythm section) -

We have some great minds here - the idea of direct and personal inter-action ought to have strong appeal - if it doesn't, you;re in the wrong place. as for a "record convention," well, we have a group here who spend a good portion of their lives at stores and on the internet in order to satisfy musical cravings related to vinyl and CD - so it's a bad idea to bring it to them instead of vice versa? sorry if I seem crabby, but it's always real easy to sit back and decide everything's a bad idea - but we have a tendency as 'collectors' to forget there's a big world out there - here's a chance to actually engage with that world -

from what I remember from talking to guys from that generation who knew Chaloff, he was considered pretty evil - just a nasty junkie who liked to get others hooked and sell whatever he could sell to whomever would buy it - and Madame Chaloff, his mother, a noted music teacher, hated Jews; sad stuff, unfortunate, especially given his incredibly soulful playing -

well, let's clarify - the conference may include panels - maybe a noted Chicago musician to field questions; or a group pf radio people to talk about contemporary jazz radio; collectors to talk about what's hot and what's not, what's rare and what's not, what they've found that you don't know about; writers to talk about contemporary coverage of jazz and the literature; Clementine to tell us why we're all full of shit (now that's one I personally would like to see); could be a lot of things - could include tables of used LPs; a show of jazz videos and films (maybe invite Mark Cantor); a criticism of jazz academia; a talk about Jack Purvis; a debate between Chris Albertson and Berigan - a resurrection of Che - plenty of room for suggestions -
