I played Trane's Countdown solo on recorder for my secondary instrument jury in college. I would never consider making anyone else have to hear it! But then again, a soprano recorder is shrill as a motherfucker.

Wayne Shorter: Joy Ryder

Putting aside a producer's reasons for a fade out, I think there's an artistic justification for a fade out if the composer/arranger hears it that way. It's not a matter of laziness. All the tracks on Wayne Shorter's High Life (except Black Swan) being a good case in point. There ain't nothing lazy about Wayne Shorter's writing on there!
