  1. I remember Jackie McLean telling me that he was involved with Slugs in the beginning.
  2. Haynes with Wayne also played around the same time at the Left Bank in Baltimore.
  3. That's from Nica's "Three Wishes" book. I wonder if that picture was taken in Slugs'.
  4. Here's another piece about the Five Spot
  5. 9/23/14 "Jazz great named after an Egyptian god"
  6. RIP. A great musician. Had the pleasure of playing a week with him in Ronnie Cuber's group.
  7. This is no bullshit: I had a dream about four hours ago where I was asking a friend if he was familiar with "Blues Up Tight" from the Jazz Crusader's "Live at the Lighthouse '66."
  8. Joe Wilder Memorial Service September 8, 2014 6:30p Saint Peters Church 619 Lexington Avenue

  10. 8/29/14 "Played like Bird or Trane" (8 letters)
  11. Cedar Walton: Spectrum (Prestige)
  12. An innovator for sure. Had the great fortune to play with Idris, once with Lou Donaldson at the Left Bank in Baltimore and once with my own group - what turned out to be a magical combination with Tom Harrell, Ralph Moore and Dennis Irwin, a thoroughly enjoyable gig from beginning to end. Idris was game to play anything.
  13. Recently bought an iPhone 5s. Was having trouble with the earbud microphone so I asked Siri "Can you hear me?" Siri responded, "I don't know what you mean by 'humor me'"
  14. I'll be at the Tokyo Billboard Live October 30 - November 1 with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Happy to comp if I can. Send me a PM if interested.
  15. Did this tune really gain that much notoriety based on the "Day In Copenhagen" recording alone? YES
  16. Where's the piano?
  17. I have a tape of us playing Countdown from 1991 that is mind boggling in its virtuosity - physical and mental. He plays a long solo that's so free and liberated in his phrasing all the while not missing one chord change. Imagine Bird playing on Countdown like he did on Move on the Birdland 1950.
  18. American citizenship or residence didn't seem a factor when selecting Toots Thielemans in 2009.
  19. I wanna hear the Roy Haynes Quartet with Wayne Shorter.
  20. It was hilarious until he slapped him. That took it to a whole other place... Didn't have to go there.
