  1. Priceless. Budd Johnson is playing his ass off.
  2. I don't know about anybody else but I had a good time.
  3. Was that Laura Dreyer?
  4. Having been the pianist on the gig (April, 1987), my recollection is that neither Joe or Johnny were particularly enamored of the other and were essentially resigned to just sharing the bandstand with the same rhythm section. We also followed the Jazz Showcase with a week at Yoshi's in Oakland. It wasn't really a two-tenor band. Joe would play a few tunes then Johnny would play his three tunes, then they would play one together to close the set. How I wish I could have joined Griff a year earlier to have shared the stage with him and Jaws! But playing with Joe was VERY inspiring, despite the uninspired rhythm section. We played Punjab, Serenity, Without a Song, Invitation - the usual Joe-Hen songbook. He was very specific about piano voicings, which I welcomed enthusiastically, as few horn players have the piano/arranging skills to make such intelligent choices and really know what they want. Unfortunately that was my only opportunity to work with him.

  7. Did I see a photo of Fats Navarro playing with Bird?
  8. That sucks. In addition to being a world class photographer he was a great guy.
  9. Bud Powell and Art Tatum get honorable mention. (Retitled "Shoot the Piano Player after Truffaut's movie based on it.)
  10. Barry's first set at the Village Vanguard on Wednesday was broadcast live over NPR and is archived.
  11. While I'd love to be able to say otherwise, I was driving.
  12. With no discernible signs or road blocks indicating it was still closed, we foolishly continued the climb up the Col de Tourmalet. We became suspicious as the snow covered more and more of the road. By then, turning around was no easy task. Eddy Merckx would have known better.
  13. I also enjoy watching for the scenery with my Michelin map in hand. Having just been through the Pyrénées last May, I'm looking forward to revisiting these roads - coincidentally I drove nearly the exact route the Tour will take Monday and Tuesday, from St. Girons to Bagneres to Pau. From St. Girons to Bagneres-de-Luchon From Bagneres to Arreau From Argeles-Gazost to Col du Soulor Col du Soulor Col d'Aubisque
  14. Thanks for passing on this news. My experience working with him was interesting to say the least.
  15. I'd like to take #80 in November if possible. PM sent. Thanks.
  16. I might be interested but need a few questions answered about protocol, procedure, uploading technical stuff, etc. . Is there a BT monitor or guru I can PM?
  17. Coincidentally someone told me about that website today. I found a concert from a European tour I played with the Jazztet: Art Farmer Benny Golson Jazztet, Vienna, July 6, 1995 http://ia311018.us.archive.org/3/items/ArtFarmerBennyGolsonJazztet1995-07-06ViennaAustria/ArtFarmerBennyGolsonJazztet1995-07-06ViennaAustria.wma?cnt=0
  18. I'm disappointed that neither Lou Donaldson or Johnny Griffin have ever been recipients. Politics at play...
  19. I've got an original Oh Baby LP. Harold Vick and Blue Mitchell - great front line. I used to play "Oh Baby" in college with Al Kiger and Pookie Johnson.
