  1. Fascinating. The singer Leslie Dorsey was murdered in a hold up driving a cab in 1988. I guess this recording never came out. Definitely Duvivier. I'm guessing Bobby Rosengarden on drums? Who's the pianist?
  2. This would be my pick:
  3. This thread made me go back to listen to a live recording I made with Buddy Montgomery's quartet (inc. Ray Appleton, Dwayne Burno) at Sweet Basil in 1997. Hope it sees the light of day...
  4. Didn't Laurie Johnson do the music for "The Avengers?"

  6. No slight against Pharoah but after listening to this it made me wonder what if John Gilmore joined Trane instead.
  7. Wow. Junior on First Light and Space Track! Never heard him open up like this before - amazing.
  8. If you can get past the sound effects (I know this is very difficult for a lot of people) , PN is some of Wayne's most intriguing, detailed, fleshed out composing of all time.
  9. Glad you enjoyed it.
  10. Up. If you can't make it by, you can watch us live at smallsjazzclub.com. In addition to original music and the assorted standard (Something for everyone!), I arranged Schoenberg's "Vergangenes" from op. 16 and a piano prelude by Roslavets - amazing chords. Both beautiful pieces, but not everyone's cup of tea. Nevertheless, don't knock it 'til you've heard it.
  11. Great to see these clips. I played on one of (maybe his last?) Nathen's last records, "The Other Page," with Ben Riley and David Williams, if I remember correctly. Nice guy.
  12. Let's try this again: Michael Weiss - piano, compositions, with Steve Wilson - alto, soprano, flute Joe Martin - bass George Fludas - drums Smalls Jazz Club 183 West 10th Street Sets at 10:00p and 11:30p There might be live video - check the website.
  13. Max Roach These photos are most likely from the school of jazz in Lenox, MA
  14. Had the pleasure of sharing the stage (a great one - Volkstheater in Vienna) in 1995 (with the Jazztet) on a double-bill with Shearing's trio. A totally beautiful guy. Gonna play Conception today.
  15. Was talking to Lee Konitz at the Vanguard tonight about Don Ferrara. He said he was really advanced... playing on a very high level, after which he supposedly had a change of embouchure or mouthpiece and then disappeared off the scene completely.
  16. Thanks all. Much appreciated.
  17. Bertrand - Which compositions were played? Any more details you can add to your report?
  18. I played a concert a couple of years ago with Phil and Lou Donaldson. I wonder if the two ever recorded together.
  19. Thanks for providing the amazon link. While I'm happy to learn about Guitar Slim, my primary interest were the sidemen and if they solo on these tracks. Interesting to see Griff, Philly Joe, Percy and Elmo playing on this kind of date in 1958.

  21. Philly Joe is killin' on here.
  22. Sacajawea is a bad-ass tune. Serenata has been arranged and orchestrated beautifully. Angola and Orbits have been given a total reworking over with the depth of detail that only Wayne can give. Get with the program!
  23. I played with Chaka Khan last night at the Tokyo Billboard Live club. She sat in with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. She was very personable and was fearless on the bandstand, not knowing what we were doing. we played Slide's "Frame For the Blues" and she just winged it, modulation and all. Sang her ass off as usual. Had the perfect opportunity to quote "Ain't Nobody" in the tune beforehand.
