  3. Thanks again. Maybe see you in NYC one of these days Marla.
  4. Thanks everyone. Have to say the year has started off pretty well. My sentiments exactly! Have a great birthday anniversary day, Michael! As I told Jeff, I'm performing next week in Eugene, OR. But that's as close as I can get this time around. I haven't played in Seattle since 1987 with Griff, when Lucky Thompson stopped by.

  6. I think McCoy left at exactly the right time. And he played his ass off and fit in perfectly with what Trane was doing right up to the time he left. Meditations, Live at the Half Note, Live in Seattle, all of it. McCoy is totally attuned to Trane's multi-tonality, and is probably the only pianist who could fit in that well. Struggling to keep up????
  7. He was a very proud man. Could get a little cranky at times. But as I said earlier, he was very sick. This was a last "comeback" of sorts, as I think he had been off the scene for a while. I didn't have the opportunity to get to know him too well.
  8. Like the Nica documentary, in my view this is another documentary that overemphasizes the documenter's discovery of/fascination with their subject. They can't quite seem to keep themselves out of the limelight. The "'Tis Autumn" producer is also one who thinks he doesn't have to pay the performers, including yours truly. In the segments filmed at the Jazz Standard, Jackie performed amazingly considering how much he was suffering, in really tremendous pain. There are a couple of additional tunes on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcSwZHDrigE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xY7ZV_G6C0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eRkAkagTFs
  9. That's very funny!
  10. For me the highlight of the NEA Jazz Masters awards ceremony was Yusef's piece performed with a percussionist. In addition to a host of wooden flutes and regular flute Yusef played tenor and sang. His sound on tenor is still incredible. Other highlights included Moody's introduction of Kenny Barron, Jimmy Heath's brief introduction of Cedar and Gerald Wilson's introduction of Bobby Hutcherson, who unfortunately didn't play.
  11. Yusef is receiving an NEA Jazz Master award on Tuesday at JALC along with Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson and others. Hopefully he'll play. I'll report back.

  14. 1979 Indianapolis Barry about to throw down on some glistening Naptown soul food while innocent squirt looks on in disbelief.
  15. I bought a Suitcase Rhodes in 1973 but the power of the built-in amp was pretty weak. But it had the BEST action and sound and it never went out of tune. WHY did I sell it???? Because I'm a stupid motherfucker. I'm sure later models have much more power. Good luck!
  16. Not really the answer you're looking for. But one of my favorite composers still doing it after 1960: Messiaen: Sept Haïkaï (1962) Couleurs de la Cité Céleste (1963) Des Canyons aux Etoiles (1974) My comment might have been the one you alluded to, but I was really referring to a much wider net of 20th century music in general.
  17. Daniel Sadownick Sextet @ Music Hall's Jazz Café Friday & Saturday, December 11-12 Daniel Sadownick - percussion Terell Stafford - trumpet Mike Karn - tenor Michael Weiss - piano Dwayne Burno - bass Daniel Freedman - drums
  18. Found this photo so I thought I'd post it here. David Wong on bass and Tiger, a Japanese child prodigy sitting in on drums. Dig the ten gallon hat.
  19. Been listening to live Mahavishnu all day. A nice jolt!
  20. You can listen to this same group (minus Hawk) play Three Little Words along with an interview with Hall Overton from the New School, 1963 on the JazzLoftProject website.
  21. I'm looking for the Blakey Newport concert with Wayne and KD.
  22. Bill Carney. Also known in Philadelphia as "Mr. C." and husband of Trudy Pitts. Jimmy Heath had forwarded me this photo from Tootie last month asking if I could identify "the other two." This group was called the High Tones.
