--- where...? don't see him yet. -e-

i'm honored to be born on the very same date and year that this gem was recorded... , -e-

as a footnote, i've found asphalt canyon suite to be less commercial (or definitely not any more so) than night song. both are very *very* choice... regards to all, -e-

---- on a *good* day i can decipher about 65% - 70% of an article's content. enough so to understand what's going on... and btw, these issues are defintely from the master tapes. regards, -e-

------------------- 1. yes, in my experience there is a consistency to the sonic signature of this and the prior 'blue note works' series (often referred to as the 'tocj' series). mind you, i've only about 8 stereo titles from this latest '1500' series. i won't subject you to my poor description of the qualities and personality of this sound, but to my ears it's simply the standard (short of the original vinyl, which even then can be an occasional toss-up). i'll also be the first to admit a fondness for a bright high end, fair-to-partly-cloudy midrange, and a true low end with feeling/presence. these 1500's exceed on all counts. especially when understanding the masters they're working with. 2. there is an individual team of 2 toshiba staff engineers, rather young by engineer-age standards, who preside over the remastering. a recent swing journal article profiles the series and the engineers. , -e-

and the fact that these two played in such varying settings is yet another testament to their enduring greatness, no? -e-

i love grant and wes equally, for differeing reasons. what can i say that hasn't already been said? for me, i feel that there's more meat on the bones of most of grant's performances, but there's not a single wes recording that i can't find something to love about. from the early riversides to the last CTI/a&m's. think about how their approach and style differ... wes with his fat round thumb-picked chords and grant with his uber-clean single line phrases. each reward listeners differently. of course we've always heard the pap about wes "selling out", but i see past that. grant was placed in a more commercial context too with the final comedown and his majesty king funk, both of which i love. as a young listener though, i was exposed to wes before i was exposed to grant. -e-

one small thing about bill, the person. in fact, i kind of hesitate to say it, but he is positively an obsessive compulsive. a great person and god knows highly intelligent. the very essence of a musician you'd expect to ace a blindfold test. FWIW, -e-

Favorite Disc in the Miles Plugged Nickel Box
etherbored replied to vibes's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
--- there's a plie of replies, and long ones at that, that i've not completey read through yet. so unless these two questions haven't been answered yet, i'll take my stab. in *no* way should you be listening to or even thinking about these compositions in their original context, IMHO. this incarnation of the group was completely about taking the known, shared, common and using them as a basis for reinventing the wheel for the common listener via dates like this plugged nickel set. in that sense, this set is not about my funny valentine or walkin' as much as it is the communication, empathy, and abstractions betwixt and between miles, wayne, tony, ron, and herbie. i listen to this set with the same mindset as something by, say, the greateful dead or phish... forgive my crude and hacked reply, but maybe that will help you sort of get your head around a little of the "how to"... in other words, the rules are bent but not broken. cheers, -e- -

i've read this whopper of a run-on at least six times and *still* can't make any sense of it... -
--- i *am* a big fan of s'wonderful, no doubt about it. it's chock full of intelligent twists and turns that i never tire of. so do his new york trio records, for that matter. if you haven't heard any, i may be convinced to burn them for you. in fact, here's a funny story about s'wonderful. when i met bill for the second time about 6 months ago i told him i brought a copy of my favorite recording (by him) with me for him to sign and would he care to guess which one? "it has a woman on water-ski's" he says, completely flooring me. then we talked about how venus covers harken to the vampy covers of the mid to late 1950's. i encourage you to check out the barron samples online. i like what i hear. jay leonhart is on bass and al foster is drumming... cheers, -e-
-
--- bol, how right you are and i could not agree more! s'wonderful is amazing. i own 4 copies of it (jewelcase, SACD, mini-lp, and vinyl). i've talked with bill about this and he says he hears no difference between the venus and blue note recordings, but he's got to be putting me on! i heard the samples of the barron disc at www.venusrecord.com. it was just released today (12/22; yesterday in japan). i will definitely pick it up. happy holidays! -e- ps: and yes, bill stewart is the stewart in question...

one of the single finest straightahead trio records (along with the cure)i've ever heard, bar *none*. i love it so much own 4 seperate issues. , -e- ps:according to some friends who work for toshiba japan, 'hyper-magnum' sound is nothing more than marketing copy.

-- i'm unsure myself now... all i know is jim a's mention of venus winning the volume war drew me in. then the increased dynamic range of their recordings was brought up. so i'm simply trying to tether the two together... *is* there a correlation? -e- ps: was listening to this today when i realized it was recorded at avatar by jim...
