  1. ps: what's killing is how they're intelligent enough to actually be competitive on price...!
  2. --- okay, ordered and on its way... thanks for the recommendations, -e-
  3. ---- which raises a question which may have an obvious answer: why is dustygroove referred to as bastards? they make it all too easy to part with hard earned cash? :rsmile: , -e-
  4. ---- a higher compliment i couldn't imagine. thank you, john. -e-
  5. --- entirely possible, but i've known this date with benny golson for so long that it's hard to tell. allow me to return the favor by humbly presenting lem's beat. , -e-
  6. 'nuff said - many thanks! -e-
  7. has anyone heard or own this title? if i'm not mistaken, i understand that lone hill is basically bootlegging what they issue... they sure have some tasty looking titles in their series. regards, -e-
  8. +/- 30 minutes... woefully short! -e- ps: the list could go on and on.
  9. hey, an attachment to a specific recording is a powerful and subjective thing. what i have a real attachment to, others may deem as pure pap... in this care though, we're talking about some excellent sessions. thanks to jim for initializing this thread! -e-
  10. < insert mutated shirley coverart here > now that's funny! who said europeans have no sense of humour...? -e-

  12. ----- lemmie guess - no OJC's.... , -e-
  13. --- excellante! be sure to share your impressions of asphalt canyon suite... personally, i think it's getting the shorter end of the stick as i'm preferring it to night song.
  14. -- did you get asphalt canyon suite while you were at it...?
  15. BTW, sound samples are here... regards, -e-
  16. since it was an OJC that inspired me to stop lurking and start posting, when the opportunity came for me to choose an AOTW i thought in my own little way i'd honor that by choosing another OJC. a not so big and important title, but great to listen to new jazz date recorded on april 19, 1960 @ englewood cliffs ('supervised' by esmond edwards and arranged by oliver nelson). ---------------------------- lem winchester - vib oliver nelson - ts curtis peagler - as billy brown - p (1,4) roy johnson - p (others) wendell marshall - b art taylor - d ----------------------------- 1 - eddy's dilema - 11.37 2 - lem & aide - 7.58 3 - freindly persuasion - 4.08 4 - your last chance - 6.50 5 - lady day - 2.51 6 - just friends - 5.17 ----------------------------- what can i say? to me, lem is, as are many of the musicians we all love, grossly underrated. i find no or very little critical acclaim of his work, yet i love everything i've heard him on. a discography can be found here... regards, -e-
  17. --- where...? don't see him yet. -e-
  18. i'm honored to be born on the very same date and year that this gem was recorded... , -e-
  19. as a footnote, i've found asphalt canyon suite to be less commercial (or definitely not any more so) than night song. both are very *very* choice... regards to all, -e-
  20. ---- on a *good* day i can decipher about 65% - 70% of an article's content. enough so to understand what's going on... and btw, these issues are defintely from the master tapes. regards, -e-
  21. ------------------- 1. yes, in my experience there is a consistency to the sonic signature of this and the prior 'blue note works' series (often referred to as the 'tocj' series). mind you, i've only about 8 stereo titles from this latest '1500' series. i won't subject you to my poor description of the qualities and personality of this sound, but to my ears it's simply the standard (short of the original vinyl, which even then can be an occasional toss-up). i'll also be the first to admit a fondness for a bright high end, fair-to-partly-cloudy midrange, and a true low end with feeling/presence. these 1500's exceed on all counts. especially when understanding the masters they're working with. 2. there is an individual team of 2 toshiba staff engineers, rather young by engineer-age standards, who preside over the remastering. a recent swing journal article profiles the series and the engineers. , -e-
  22. from one newbie to another, willkommen! , -e-

    Grant and Wes

and the fact that these two played in such varying settings is yet another testament to their enduring greatness, no? -e-
