  1. Happy Birthday, Dan! BTW, now that you're 40, you can OFFICIALLY take on the role of the crotchety, conservative, middle-aged guy you've been rehearsing so well for years. Just kidding. Well, sort of. Seriously, though, have a great birthday!
  2. Are you using that word as an adjective? Or as a verb?
  3. Hey! Where's my shipping material, catalogs, and receipt???
  4. Thanks, Chris! Please keep us posted if you hear anything. I just hope that nobody at Concord--and especially Norman Lear--takes my "socially-responsible feel-good" comment the wrong way. I actually have a great deal of respect for Mr. Lear and his many artistic, societal, and philanthropic contributions.
  5. That's never been established as the reason for the discounting, as far as I know. In fact, in one of the several threads about this set, here, some of our European Board Members discuss how their Universal-distributed Farlow sets also have these words on the spine, including sets that were sold at full price. In fact, common sense would seem to militate against that explanation, since it would have cost Universal substantially less to just replace the box tops with "Concert Band" on the spine, instead of taking a hit of more than 50% off the sale price. We've yet to hear an explanation from Mosaic or Universal of why the Universal Farlow sets have been widely sold--and continue to be sold--at such a substantial discount off the Mosaic price. It would be interesting to hear such an explanation if anyone can ascertain it.
  6. Several of the other large edition Verves (e.g., Basie), but none--other than Farlow--at such a discounted price, at least so far.
  7. For some reason, that photo reminded me of this photo (with apologies to Bev Stapleton).
  8. Yeah, that's a real tragedy--having to live in San Francisco.
  9. It may be, but it sounds terrific. Actually, apparently some copies obtained this way did have a brief sound defect at the beginning of one of the discs. Mine and many others didn't. So just make sure that you order it from a place that has plenty of copies in stock, in case you need a replacement set--unlike Mosaic, most other online retailers will not just replace a single disc, but will only replace the entire set.
  10. Anyone else read these words and think of this? (Sorry, but this thread just felt like it had run it's course and was ripe for being derailed a bit. )
  11. Or maybe it's that you're both left coasters.
  12. That's the only Mosaic deal of which I'm aware, and it's been around for months through several online retailers (including Tower and CD Universe). There was a great deal of discussion about it on the Board a few months ago, and quite a few Members took advantage of these deals (including me). Nobody in a position to know has yet explained why the Universal-distributed Farlow, unlike any other Mosaic, is so readily available at these heavily-discounted prices.
  13. Don't think he's listened to it yet, so you're the first--at least the first who's posted about listening. I'm listening to a little of it myself, now.
  14. You ALWAYS have to be first, don't you?
  15. Yeah. Can't wait for the Tal Farlow set to go OOP for that very reason. ← No need to pass on that one--an excellent set, by the way--when you can get a brand-new copy of the Universal-distributed version (identical to the one sold by Mosaic) from an Amazon Marketplace seller here (click on "used & new"), for less than half the cost if purchased from Mosaic.
  16. I'll definitely take you up on that sometime. And you still have to get back down to Philly for some fun and games.
  17. You know, Chris, I could be there within a couple of hours the next time you have more than you can eat yourselves.
  18. Depends--what's the set number?
  19. I second the recommendation of 2-3-4, which features some great latter-day Hawk, plus two trio tracks with Eddie Costa in addition to the Hawkins and Jones quartet tracks. ← But currently OOP, if I'm not mistaken.
  20. She was terrific! She was the warm-up act for Dave Brubeck. It was a great show--I wrote a brief review of it here, if you're interested.

Playing mind games with you? Actually, you can still do searches and get to the regular pages.
  23. I've actually gotten to see both Marian McPartland and Benny Golson--both of whom are in the uncropped version of that photo--in concert this year. Sonny Rollins (standing behind Marian) also performed in Philly this year, but I didn't get to see him.
