  1. Thanks! Just listened to the Waldstein (a personal favorite).
  2. Thanks, ordered one... not that I expect to find time to listen before... 2010? but this will be a welcome opportunity to get a foot into another vastly unknown territory, and the price is more than right, too! As Chuck said in an earlier post (in 2004, actually!), "[t]his is a life long enchantment," so you'll have plenty of time to enjoy it.
  3. For anyone looking to pick up one of the truly classic complete sets of Beethoven's piano sonatas, Amazon.UK has the 1950's Kempff set on Deutsche Grammophon for the ridiculously low price of 17 pounds (about $32.50) exluding VAT, which those outside the UK don't pay (the 2.97 pounds VAT is automatically deducted during checkout). This set is universally praised for both musicianship and sound quality, and received the hightest ratings of a rosette in the Penguin Guide and 3 discs in the Gramophone Guide. It also seems to be generally preferred to Kempff's stereo 1960's set. With shipping to the US costing about 3 pounds, the total shipped cost is about $38.00, less than half of what the set generally goes for in the US. Needless to say, I ordered a set. If you're interested, go here.
  4. With all the praise on this Board for remastering by RVG, Addey, 20-bit K2, etc., I really think that Tarantino and his Fantasy colleagues are--and have been since the '80s--the unsung heroes of remastering.
  5. 10,000 copies--and it isn't even a Universal set!
  6. Discs 2 & 3 now. Really diggin' this set.
  7. Pacific Jazz Piano Trios Select--Disc 1 My first time through. These Freeman sessions sound terrific.
  8. My experience has been similar.
  9. 82 this past Thursday.
  10. ....great review....
  11. Hey Dan, on Friday nights here during the summer, they show the movie as a sing-along with props--a la "Rocky Horror Picture Show"--in Independence National Park (just a couple of blocks from Independence Hall). Read about it here (but ignore the photo to the right which has nothing to do with the movie). We went 2 summers ago, and it was quite a hoot. Lots of tourists/"1776" groupies singing along with "Sit down, John!" You should come up one summer and participate--just bring your tri-corner hat.
  12. And that would be . . . . ?
  13. Thanks. I just pulled the trigger! Great set. You'll be happy to have it. Yes indeedy.
  14. Mulligan CJB has now moved from "Running Low" to "Last Chance". Get it while you can!
  15. I agree, too. The sound on this set is exceptional — very natural without having that beefed up compression feel to it. Ron, how did you end up talking to Tarantino? You didn't happen to ask him about any other (future) box sets did you? I've spoken to him a few times over the last couple of years. I think I first spoke to him when I called Fantasy with a question about a weird sound glitch on a disc in one of the Art Tatum boxes. I was expecting to speak with a customer service rep, but instead was transferred to "one of the engineers," which turned out to be Joe. After I explained the issue to Joe, he actually listened to the recording himself, and called me back to confirm that the problem is on the master tape. He's always been very friendly and helpful. But, to answer your question, I have not asked him about future box sets. Maybe next time.
  16. I think the day will soon come when people who use dude in conversation will seem as silly as those who once bought Mitch Miller records. Dude, that time has long since come, which is why I dudify with great regularity. Hopefully the cynical irony will be lost on those for whom it is intended. Otherwise what's the point? Word. I knew you were hip enough to dig it . . . . . . Dude.
  17. Well, I know what we're spinning at the next chat! Does Conn need a copy? Conn has the 25 CD box set. And listens to it regularly. Dude, you don't just listen to it. You sing along.
  18. Looks like Chalupa is--see his post here. BTW, where were you when organissimo played here 3 times last month?
  19. I was one, too, Wharton '76. I'd forgotten that--Wharton '77 here. We probably passed each other a lot on campus.
  20. Peter, you should come! Besides, there are a few errors in the deed to my property that I need to . . . ahem . . . discuss with you.
  21. Well shoot me but I was trying to distinguish between the mighty Amazon 800 lb gorilla and the small to mid-size businesses that use their service to sell to consumers. But I generally go to whoever has the best price (and that includes other internet retailers such as yourmusic). So I chose #2 as just a general internet category. And if it's all the same to you, I'd really prefer not to shoot you.
  22. I answered number 2 which, to me, includes number 3.
  23. Actually, a lot of the Contemporary OJCs (e.g., Manne, Hawes, Kessel) seem to still be readily available, and not in imminent danger of going OOP (although the US 20-bit K2s are all OOP now, though still available in the supply chain). With Concord in charge now, however, I wouldn't wait too long.
