  1. I don't get it! I do Google all the time - no prob, but I put "jazz improv" in the global search AND in the periodicals and it comes up bumpkis! No, I'm not using the "+" sign, but why wouldn't the two words together work? Now, it says "jazz improv" cause I just posted, but none other(?)
  2. OK, I did a search on this topic globally and under this heading and didn't see any mention, so... I've been snail mail solicited by "Jazz Improv Magazine" - never seen it or heard of it before. There are some tempting things about it: it's size and an included CD with each issue at a pretty reasonable price (except for the weird fact that a 2 year sub is a nickle more than 2 one year subs). Anyone want to share their views on this mag? What's the really best things that you get out of it and/or the thing that you just can't stand about it. Articles well written? CD has a nice variety and is not less than an hour? Too much fluff for your taste? Is there a killer back issue that's a must have? Comments are welcome and greatly appreciated! Thanks, Rod --- Now playing: Anthony Braxton/Mario Pavone - These Foolish Things Remind Me of You
  3. with Adolf Hitler on vibes! --- Now playing: François Bayle - Voyage au centre de la tête
  4. Excellent indeed! I wish this could've gone on for another few days or weeks! Yeah, I just loved it! I taped the majority of it - a few hours overnight I left out - and am gonna save it to a few DVDs just to look (hear?) back on in the future. As for the DJs. I don't have a problem with the talking as long as it's not bumbling like a couple of the folks that showed up during the marathon. BUT, I'm guessing that they may've been young(ish) and inexperienced and I was there once too, so I can see the nervous possibilities. Our local jazz station provides some real laughs when you hear the students. But hey, they're gettin an education! --- Now playing: François Bayle - Grandeur Nature

  7. http://www.thisislondon.com/news/articles/16449119?source=PA Rugby fan cut off his own testicles 8 February 2005 A Welsh rugby fan cut off his own testicles after his team beat England, police confirmed today. The man was rushed to hospital after the incident at Leigh Social Club in Caerphilly, South Wales. A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "We received a call from the ambulance service at approximately 9pm on the 5th to inform us of a situation at the Leigh Social Club in which a man had indeed severed his own testicles." She said the man was taken to Heath Hospital but could not confirm his condition. It was reported that the man told his friends: "If Wales win I'll cut my own balls off." After the 11-9 victory in the Six Nations clash, the man is reported to have gone outside and severed his testicles before bringing them back into the club to show fellow drinkers. A local was reported as saying that the man was on medication and should not have been drinking. --- Now playing: WKCR - Columbia University

  9. Welcome Peggy-Ann! Not a stupid question! Very important to know these things. CDs are incredibly durable. "Slightly scuffed" is different than "small scratch" tho, but checking them to see if they play fine is a good idea. If you can, try as many different kinds of players if you're real worried about a particular disc. If you're buying from a store, ask them about thir policy on returns. Many "used" CD stores have players there that you can use to test. If you got the CD home already and opened it up to discover something strange looking, then try it on different machines if possible - car stereo, home stereo, computer - you don't want to discover the fault later after the return policy of the store has expired. Also, you should know, if you don't already: Clean your CD with a soft cloth from the inside of the disc outwards - not in a circle like LPs. hope this helps, rod --- Now playing: WKCR - Columbia University

  13. That would be sad unless the programming was lame. Should be room for both. Verrrry lame! I agree with you. We have a major 24/7 classical station in the heart of Dallas. The station that I'm referring to is from the campus of the University of North Texas. --- Now playing: WKCR - Columbia University
  14. Here, our jazz station KNTU (my old stompin' ground) used to have the classical programs on weekends, but I'm seeing that these days it's being pushed out by the jazz programming. Maybe because of demand? --- Now playing: WKCR - Columbia University
  15. Hope there's no ball game for the next coupla days! ; --- Now playing: WKCR - Columbia University)

  23. 'KCR is having a bit of a time with some scratchy records - gotta move that needle over... Still, it's good to hear real LPs for a change - scratches and all! (Just pretend you're listening next to a cozy, crackling fire...) --- Now playing: WKCR - Columbia University
  24. Same here. I'd have to say that it was my mother who introduced me to JS. Couldn't help it really! Kinda born into it really: Smith, Ammons, Adderley, Jamal... so many others were constantly playing in the house, so I couldn't get away from it even if I wanted to! --- Now playing: WKCR - Columbia University
