  1. The last time I visited them was at their Pentonville Road shop. I left with a suitcase full of LPs Must have been in the 1980s...
  2. Thanks for posting that.
  3. I have fond memories of Ed and his Mole Jazz. Cost me a small fortune... Mole went downhill fast after his death.
  4. I know, no need to act like a schoolteacher. I was actually responding to GregK's post, who seemed to be under the impression that they were all Columbia titles.
  5. Probably by copying existing CD releases. I thought the old Discovery label was still controlled by Warner. Or is this some independent rip-off label? They're probably the U.K.-based Discovery Records.
  6. Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else is a Blue Note recording, so the master is owned by EMI, not Columbia (now Sony). They don't own the master of Sun Ra's Jazz in Silhouette either as far as I know.
  7. So if you can get it for $2.99 including shipping - go for it. Then be prepared for the real deal: Not cheap but worth more. This is easily the best and also the best-sounding Oliver set I've heard. Highly recommended!
  8. Google links
  9. Update: the Jamal set is delayed. Scott Wenzel told me they hope to release it by the end of 2009, but nothing's certain yet.
  10. I hope it wasn't the 1930s Ellington big-band set that fell through. I've heard from good authority (JETman) that it was the Jamal that was NOT nixed but significantly delayed that freed up the spot for the Armstrong. Scott Wenzel told me they hope to release the Jamal set by the end of 2009, but nothing's certain yet.
  11. Well the George Russell composition is good and that's about it.......and I think they repeated that twice. I am not an avid Mosaic buyer probably because I don't like overlaps and filler material. But the 3 Mosaic Selects I have(Pullen, Tolliver & Herman) are real fine and don't have alot of the excesses that the regular mosaic's seem to have. If you are not an "avid Mosaic buyer" and apparently haven't had many Mosaics, why say that the regular Mosaics seem to have "filler material" and "a lot of excesses"? You're using pretty strong words for something you don't even seem to be sure about.
  12. ...for only $42.99 this time. It's a steal.
  13. Apparently this 10% off coupon can be used: CHOLIDAYNOV2008 Sorry Chuck, didn't have the info until now.
  14. Charley Patton Revenant box on eBay for $46.90, "Buy It Now" Almost too good to be true
  15. See my post #6. The two sets represent totally different periods in Armstrong's career.
  16. The new set will have the complete 1934-1946 Armstrong Decca big-band sessions, while the OOP Mosaic (#146) has the 1950s Armstrong small-group All-Stars dates on Decca: AMG review
  17. Mosaic's Scott Wenzel just told me they are planning a Louis Armstrong box with his complete 1935-1946 Decca sessions on 7 CDs. No release date has been scheduled yet.
  18. So, will they ship outside of Germany? No harm in asking! Not everyone on this planet speaks English. Maybe the German seller is one of them, or simply doesn't want to be bothered with international shipping. The details of his auction clearly say that he only ships within Germany. International bank transfers from outside the eurozone are often very expensive, and I'm not even talking about the unfavourable exchange rates.
  19. Depends on when the Great Depression ended in one's perception; many would say 1939 with the beginning of the war economy of World War II. The earliest tracks on the Mosaic date from August 1939, just before the war started in Europe.
  20. The John R.T. Davies-mastered single Benny Goodman CDs on the Scottish Hep Jazz label are excellent alternatives. Some of the discs have several of the late 1930s and 1940s tracks that are on the Mosaic set.
  21. Why don't you ask a member who lives in Germany to help you?
  22. Frog released the John R.T. Davies-mastered Bessie Smith CDs, not JSP.
