  1. no hans; my dutch is no good. i mean to say that it was the first compact disc ever manufactured...
  2. The Tristano/Konitz/Marsh set is an absolute must in my opinion. Wonderful music.
  3. I take it you mean that's one of the earlier (if not earliest) of CD issues of that particular title. The earliest EMI Japan CDs were released in 1982. They had the prefix CP35 for popular titles and CC38 for classical CDs and the prices were 3500 and 3800 yen.. The second batch, with prefix CP32, is from 1985.
  4. The "Blue Note Works" TOCJ-15XX, TOCJ-16XX, TOCJ-40XX, TOCJ-41XX, TOCJ-42XX and TOCJ-43XX series were all mastered by Toshiba engineers, not by McMaster. I just dug a couple out - TOCJ1610 & 1612 - 1610 says "tape transfers by Tony Sestanovich". I thought he was a BN/EMI man. 1612 doesn't say anything. MG Some tape transfers may have been done by American engineers, but I was repeatedly told by several contacts that the mastering of all Japanese "Blue Note Works" CDs was done by Japanese Toshiba engineers. Is that something different, then? I thought that mastering was what it meant. MG As I understand it tape transfers are done flat, without EQ-ing and/or other manipulations, which are done during mastering. But hey, I'm no expert, on the contrary. There are people on this forum who can explain it much better.

  7. Like Reinier indicated, sample copies are just as good as the regular ones.
  8. The "Blue Note Works" TOCJ-15XX and TOCJ-16XX series are also 20-bit remasters.
  9. I e-mailed ejazzlines about this and they confirmed that almost all CP32 and CJ28 CDs have Ron McMaster's masterings.
  10. Again, as far as I know most, if not all of these Japanese CP32 and CJ28 CDs are straight reissues of the 1980s American CDs with Ron McMaster's masterings.
  11. CP32 and CJ28 (CP32 was 3200 yen, CJ28 2800 yen) are the second (CP32) and later Japanese Blue Note CD issues from the 1980s. The CP32 series was released in 1985 if I remember correctly, the CJ28 series in 1988. As far as I know both series generally have Ron McMaster's masterings. Forgot to mention that the CP35 series from 1982/1983 (if I remember correctly) contained the first Japanese EMI CD issues, but there were only a few Blue Notes in that series. They seem to have been mastered in Japan and they're very expensive nowadays.

  13. Then why not buy from a source that isn't known to be a rip off of artists and labels? This stuff was recorded in the early 60s, I believe and is nowhere in the PD. If you care at all about these issues, it should be a no-brainer when a legit reissue exists as an alternative to the pirates. Beyond that, the likelihood that the Lonehill sounds "great" is very small given their history ... Seconded!
  14. Aren't you confusing the Newport 1956 Sony 2CD-set with the Newport 1958 Mosaic Single? Or am I missing something? Newport 1956, Sony 2CD-set: Newport 1958, Mosaic Single: Or were you referring to this old Columbia 2CD-set from the early 1990s (I think), Live at Newport 1958:
  15. Hel-LO.... What date is it again today?
  16. The sound on all my Spanish RCA CDs is mediocre at best. Most of them sound as if noise reduction was applied, they're dead as a dodo. I wonder who's to blame, Jordi Pujol or someone at BMG/RCA.
  17. You just beat me to it
  18. My Cecil Taylor and Beach Boys mini-LP sleeve CD auctions. Thanks for looking.
  19. Liking certain classical performances, like Brendel's Mozart (and his Beethoven, for that matter), certainly seems to be a big no-no on this forum. There is a strong "taste-police" here
  20. How would the "regular guy" like myself self things on Ebay then? I don't have a means to accept Visa/Mastercard payments from buyers. Neither do I. I'm not a professional seller, I'm only selling stuff from my own CD collection now and then, and there's no way I could accept credit cards.
  21. I have just listed two Japanese Argo mini-LP sleeve CDs on eBay, one by Barry Harris and one by Dodo Marmarosa. Edit: it takes a while before the auctions become visible.
  22. Strangely enough, I've had far more success selling CDs on eBay than I had here, though my prices here tend to be lower. Maybe it's the high shipping rates the Dutch Postal Services charge, I don't know, but if that's the case it does seem to bother eBay buyers much less than the members here. Pity, as I'm planning to sell a substantial part of my CD collection - not because of MP3/downloads/ipods/or whatever, but I need the space and the cash...
  23. It may be fresh here, but I still find both Heineken and its "imprint" Amstel undrinkable.
  24. I have this CD and there is none. Obviously an error in the Muze database that was used. Yes .. that Muze listing program is quite a pain .. for instance, almost Bill Evans CD I have tried to list claims that it has Jim Hall on the album. I will have to do personal scans to get around this, as it seems to be impossible to edit this information .. I hardly use Muze anymore, it's a mess.
