  1. The Rose? Wasn't Bette Middler in that? I'm not really sure I'd want to see her with her clothes off. "That Rose thing" = the David Rose tune "The Stripper". The movie "The Stripper".
  2. Bandleader David Rose had a No.1 hit with "The Stripper" in June-July 1962. He also composed it.
  3. Great CD, highly recommended!
  4. Wow, great news! I wonder how many CDs a set like that would have... Wish they would be able to include the Universal-owned 1926-1931 Brunswick and Vocalion recordings! The 1994 Decca 3CD-set with that stuff doesn't sound too good to me (yes, I know the age of the recordings).
  5. You're absolutely right - though it's not as bad as the stuff Americans call beer... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Good to see you back, Volkher. Hope your health is OK!
  6. Sorry for hijacking your thread, Al!
  7. Chris left the forum some time ago, apparently because he didn't agree with the way it was being moderated or something like that.
  8. I'm afraid Chris doesn't see it that way (anymore)...
  9. How 'bout The Pope? He has a car: Didn't he lose his German citizenship when he was elected pope?
  10. Jim was last active here on January 8, 2007.
  11. Same here, that's why I'm so surprised. So do I. As soon as all this has been cleared up I'll delete this thread.
  12. In my view that's not an excuse not to answer all the messages I sent him over the last few weeks. He was last active on this forum on February 26, after I had sent him a few messages he didn’t reply to.
  13. Has anyone heard from German forum member tjobbe recently? I bought a couple of CDs from him in January, paid for them but didn't get them. When I asked him about it in February, he promised me to mail the CDs immediately, but I still haven't received them and he isn't answering my messages anymore... I hate to go public with this, but he leaves me no other choice.

    Dreyfus Records

I have one Ellington on Dreyfus, Ko Ko. The noise reduction killed the music, it's dead as a dodo...
  15. JR told me they recorded enough for a 2nd volume but it was not released. Cuscuna says the tapes did not survive. That's what Cuscuna also told me years ago.
  16. I'm looking for this CD: Earl Hines - The Earl Hines Collection 1928-1940 - Collector's Classics Can anyone help me? Thanks. Credit-card funded PayPal is my only payment option.
  17. Nice album. It's been ages since I listened to it, so I can't really comment. AMG bio
  18. I'm looking for this CD box set in EXC or better condition: The Complete Roulette Studio Recordings of Count Basie and His Orchestra - Mosaic MD10-149 Please PM me if you're selling a set or know where I can find one. Credit-card-funded PayPal is my only payment option.
  19. The only recent Herman Mosaic is the Woody's Winners single disc. Like I said above, the 7CD box set is not new, it was released in 2004.
  20. I have that Mosaic, it's a great set Pity you can't comment on the 1927-1962 Sony set.
  21. Actually, it's Arjen Gorter.
  22. Thanks for your comments, Guy. How do they compare to the same 1920s tracks on the Masters of Jazz CDs?
  23. I also posted this thread on another forum, and this is the first reply: "IIRC, there are two versions. I own the latest one, which claims to be 'remastered'. I dont know if both versions sound the same. If you are familar with the Sony Legacy editions of Duke's albums ('Blues in Orbit', "Masterpieces', etc). that's the sound what you are getting here. Except for the first tracks on disc one. Those are a disgrace. Horrible sound smothered in noise reduction. I dont think Sony bothered to remaster those for this box, they just took whatever was on those awful sounding late 80's /early 90's transfers and pasted them in the box." Any comments, especially regarding the noise reduction?
  24. The Sony Ellington box The Duke: The Columbia Years 1927-1962 has undoubtedly been discussed here before, but various searches didn't turn up anything... How's the box, a hodgepodge or a carefully selected compilation, and how's the sound, any use of noise reduction or any other mastering artefacts?
