Including Decware? Are they represented in Europe, or, more specifically, in the Netherlands? I've never seen them here.

If your friend lives in Europe, I'd advise against getting equipment that is not well represented here. Service might be a problem, and sending equipment overseas to have it serviced is very expensive.

Some of the earlier CDs from Japan sound pretty good. Many are flat transfers of the master with no EQ and almost all of them were mastered at a much lower level than anything done later. In this list, I could see wanting to check out the old Impulse! CDs but those old Columbia/CBS/Sony Miles discs? Yuck. Older CBS masterings almost always sound harsh & tinny to me. I have several of those CBS/Sony 35DP and 32DP Miles Davis CDs and they don't sound harsh and tinny to me. The current Mark Wilder remasters do, at least they sound harsh en "pinched" to me. Many, if not all of those first Japanese CBS/Sony CD pressings had pre-emphasis, which made them sound harsh and top-heavy on systems that couldn't handle pre-emphasis.

Which Japanese version is that, the 20-bit K2 jewel case remaster or the 24-bit remastered gatefold paper sleeve reissue? I sold the 24-bit remaster because it sounded too loud and harsh to me. Not my cup of tea. The 20-bit K2 version is not bad, but I didn't like it very much either and I also sold it. I don't remember which version I sold to you, sorry.

The first U.S. MCA Impulse! pressings (MCAD-5XXX) were released in 1986 and 1987. I don't know if there are any sonic differences between that series and the 1987 German Impulse! releases, but according to one of my German contacts who compared both issues of Gil Evans' Out of the Cool and Art Blakey's Art Blakey!!!!! Jazz Messengers!!!!! there are significant differences. Some of the 1991 GRP Impulse! reissues sounded to me as if noise reduction was applied; I sold most of that series a long time ago.

I got that with booklet and disk in mint condition Hans... the jewel case is not that good. In case of interest (trade possible as well) please PM me. I don't care much for the "early" quartets, and that rules out box sets with the complete quartets for me. I picked up the Vlach Quartet recordings of the later quartets, Nos.8-14 on Naxos. I've never heard the Panocha Quartet performances.

I've had this set on my waiting-for-running-low list for quite some time. Maybe you'll help to push it there for me. The music is excellent. I had this set but got the "Blue Note Works" TOCJs instead; the set is worthwhile, though, and the booklet is great.

All the more reason to try and convince him to have them published in book form.
