  1. You're not talking about this, are you? Or do you mean Edwin Fischer? BTW, what do you think of Solomon? As always, your (Chuck's and clem's) personal views are interesting and appreciated, especially since both the Arrau set and Gilels generally get positive reviews from the "pros" (Penguin, Gramophone, Third Ear, Rough Guide, etc.). I wonder what is wrong with the Arrau set according to the "specialists" here. OK, you don't like it, fine, but why not?
  2. In that case, even more reason to eventually go for the Mosaic Bix--you'll get some Texas T as well. I agree, the Mosaic is the way to go if you want a lot of good Teagarden.
  3. Other than some of their later projects, the JSP Bix set is not a rip-off. It has been available before (it's been out of print for a while), and it was mastered for JSP by John R.T. Davies.
  4. That series was also mastered by John R.T. Davies.
  5. There are a lot of vocals on the Mosaic too, on more than half of the tracks if I remember correctly. By the way, John R.T. Davies was also involved in the preparation of that set; I believe he did some of the transfers. As far as I know noise reduction was used on most of the discs, in various degrees. I'd go with the Mosaic set, with the JSP in second place.
  6. One of the all-time great directors. He'll be sorely missed.
  7. Here we go again... What's the Hoffman forum got to do with this thread?? You seem to be taking every opportunity to bash that forum here. What's your problem? If you have issues with Steve Hoffman and/or his forum, why not contact him or post there instead of boring us with it here? Talking about whining... Hans, why don't you try to get it deleted, like you do with posts that embarras you about sonic obsessions? For your information: I deleted a few of my own "looking for" threads with your negative, totally unnecessary and offensive comments on the items I was looking for. Anyway, your post re the Hoffman forum speaks volumes. Edit: apologies to the other posters for the thread crap. I'm out of here.

  10. She died on Friday (November 17, 2006). NY Times obituary
  11. I second that!
  12. One of the great football players of all time!
  13. First edition was titled 'Like Who' (same cover as the 'Like Basie' one shown earlier). This was UAL 4054 and copyrighted 1959. Second edition's front cover bore two huge letters P for Paul and Q for Quinichette and had no other album title. It was a white as the original cover was black. Catalogue number is UAL 4077. Same tracks list. 1960 copyright. According to Goldmine's Price Guide to Collectible Jazz Albums 1949-1969 the first edition was Like Basie with catalog number UAL-4024 (UAS-5024 for stereo; 1959), and the second was Like Who? with catalog number UAL-4054 (UAS-5054 for stereo; also 1959). The 1960 reissue was called Paul Quinichette with catalog number UAL-4077 (UAS-5077 for stereo).
  14. My Bruyninckx "Swing" discography says the recordings were made in NYC on March 20, 1959. According to a note in the disco the album was first issued under the title Like Basie on United Artists UAL-4024, but withdrawn from the catalog and later released as Like Who? with the same catalog number.
  15. Actually, that bit about VAT is not quite correct; VAT is not deducted for EU residents, only for those outside the EU.

  18. Haven't heard the Stanko, but I know that the sound on every ECM jazz recording is heavily doctored i.e. equalized - e.g. there is no cymbal sounding like on those CDs. ??? The Tord Gustavsen CDs I have from ECM are about the best CDs in my collection ... in regard to those two CDs, I can't follow your argument at all. To my ears there's something "artificial" about the sound on the ECM CDs I have, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
  19. The original U.S. OJCs are still available. CDUniverse is selling them for $9.49 each, and I've also seen them elsewhere.
  20. Wouldn't you say it's the other way around, Coltrane's late work being the musical equivalent of Beethoven's in terms of density and intensity of ideas?
  21. Has anyone ever heard Claudio Arrau's box set? Opinions?
  22. That has to be wrong. The rate is in the close neighborhood of 1.9. Correct. £21.78 = about €32 = about $42 at Friday's exchange rates (11/10/06)
  23. Actually, the set includes not one but two Donald Byrd albums, Byrd's Eye View (Transition TRLP 4) and Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill (Transition TRLP 17).
  24. Get the set. I have a couple of the older TOCJs with much of the material and I prefer those sonically, but the set is fine.
