One of my favourites since I began listening to jazz, many decades ago... Highly recommended listening!

Here's an earlier thread.

Try HMV Japan, they're included in this list.

Could be Johnny Griffin with Strings and Brass: White Gardenia - Riverside 387/Original Jazz Classics 1877. One of the titles on that album is "Left Alone". Griffin discography AMG

It's a nice album, one can never have too much J.R.

I've just listed several jazz XRCDs and CDs, and rock CDs on eBay. Thanks for looking.

I have two Japanese mini-LP sleeve CD reissues of Mercury/EmArcy recordings, A Profile of Gerry Mulligan, originally issued on the LP Mercury MG 20453 and reissued on Universal (Japan) CD UCCM-9123, and Mainstream of Jazz, originally issued on the LP EmArcy MG 36101 and reissued on Universal (Japan) CD UCCM-9094. They're great, but I would prefer a Mosaic set which would hopefully have the material in chronological order.

It came out as part of this twofer: Julian Priester & Walter Benton - Out Of This World (Jazzland - Milestone MCD-47087-2) They left out "Iris" from the Benton album, due to "playing time limitations".

One of my favourite French actors.

Having heard Lou on records with Art Blakey and Brownie and really digging him I got "Natural Soul" and was underwhelmed. BTW is there a reason it's not included in the Mosaic? The Natural Soul is from 1962 and fell outside the 1957-1960 time frame of the Mosaic - so did Gravy Train, and I have no idea why they decided to include that album.
-
There's no material with Clifford Brown on the Donaldson Mosaic. The set includes these albums: Wailing with Lou - Blue Note 1545 (recorded in 1957) Swing and Soul - Blue Note 1566 (1957) Lou Takes Off - Blue Note 1591 (1957) Blues Walk - Blue Note 1593 (1958) Light-Foot - Blue Note 4053 (1958) LD + 3 - Blue Note 4012 (1959) The Time Is Right - Blue Note 4025 (1959) Sunny Side Up - Blue Note 4036 (1960) Midnight Sun - Blue Note LT-1028 (1960) Gravy Train - Blue Note 4079 (1961)

The dollar has fallen sharply against the euro this week; the current exchange rate is $1 = €0.76 / €1 = $1.31

Track 8 on disc 6 of my set, which I bought several years ago, doesn't skip. The total timing of my disc 6 is 71:59.

I couldn't find a previous thread about this, so here goes - according to the Mosaic site the following sets and single CDs are now scheduled for release in January 2007: Mosaic Select McCoy Tyner (3 CDs) This set contains all six sessions recorded by Tyner for Blue Note between August 1968 and September 1970. This includes "Expansions," "Extension," "Asante" and three sessions not issued at the time which later appeared on the double album "Cosmos." This was one of Tyner's most overlooked and highly creative periods. Bobby Hutcherson (3 CDs) This Select gathers all of Bobby Hutcherson's straight-ahead Blue Note studio sessions from the '70s (Cirrus, Inner Glow, Waiting, The View From The Inside and Knucklebean). Issued in the heyday of fusion, these superb albums received little notice and quickly sank from sight. Sidemen on these 1974-76 sessions include Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Harold Land and George Cables. The especially rare Inner Glow was released only in Japan. All five albums are on CD for the first time in this set. Mosaic Singles Jimmy Witherspoon – Goin’ to Kansas City Blues (MCD-1011) Talk about a forgotten little gem! Jimmy Witherspoon’s first full-length album as a leader is a knock-out! Like all great albums, this 1957 date benefits from a confluence of all the right ingredients. The most inspired notion for this album was reuniting Witherspoon with McShann, who gave him his professional start. Budd Johnson provided swinging, understated arrangements and a first-rate New York group (Emmett Berry, J. C. Higginbotham, Hilton Jefferson, Seldon Powell, Al Sears, Kenny Burrell, Gene Ramey and Mousey Alexander) that achieved the tight, joyous feel of Kansas City swing effortlessly. Added to the original album are three more tunes from the session that were later issued on a French RCA LP. For 11 of the 13 tunes, we were able to find stereo masters for the first time. Various Artists – The Jazz Piano (MCD-1012) The “various artists” on this album read like the history of jazz piano: Willie “The Lion” Smith, Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams, Billy Taylor and Charles Bell. The occasion was a piano workshop on a Sunday afternoon at the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival in 1965, obviously a time when giants still walked the earth. The original album contains only ten tunes. This reissue contains all 19 performances, newly remixed from the original three-track masters, adding new material from Smith, Williams, Taylor and Bell. The concert is now presented in the order in which it was performed. Each pianist performs solo or with bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley. Earl Hines duets with Ellington on an improvised blues and with Taylor on “Sweet Lorraine.” The concert closes with a blow-out version of “Rosetta” with Hines, Smith, Williams, Taylor and George Wein sharing two pianos. A one-of-a-kind event. Woody Herman – Woody’s Winners(MCD – 1013) Woody Herman made more than his share of great live albums in his lifetime, but this 1965 remote from Basin Street West in San Francisco was one of his best. It not only produced Woody’s Winners, but three more titles appeared on Woody Live East And West and another five appeared on Jazz Hoot. Now all 16 performances are gathered on this one CD for the first time, newly remixed from the original three-track tapes.

Hey it's November: Where's the Mosaic Ellington Set?
J.A.W. replied to medjuck's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just read on the Mosaic site that the Ellington set will ship on December 13. -
If you are not asking this in jest (...) I'm not, why should I. I'm interested. I have a few sets, but I find none of them totally convincing and I'd like to explore some others.

Françoise Dorléac was a beauty too - remember Roman Polanski's Cul-de-sac? She died in a car crash when she was 25, in 1967. Great story, Guy!

Another sad day for jazz... I love her great performance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival (Jazz on a Summer's Day)

I should say that I'm no fan of the fortepiano but you make it sound like Brautigam's Beethoven is better than his Mozart (which I hope it is). His Mozart is interesting and worth a listen, and perhaps more if you enjoy the fortepiano sound, but nothing to rave about. Though I have seen enough reviews heaping praise upon praise on his Mozart so it might be just me. Staier, too, did not make much of an impression on me with his Mozart, mostly earlier recordings but again, I have not heard his Schubert. I will give it a shot. Gökhan, I'm interested in your Beethoven piano sonatas preferences, if any.

I'm afraid they go back to their older master tapes and do not make new transfers from the orgininal tapes. The French BMG branch issued its Rollins box independently from the US box, it seems to me. I avoided the French reissue of The Bridge because it sounded just like the box set issue, whereas the new US Bluebird first editions CD sounds magnificent!!! But I had to order that from a US mail order shop, they do not distribute it in Europe 'cause they wanna sell their own pressing! I compared the Classic Records gold disc, the French 24-bit remastered version, the Japanese 24-bit remastered reissue and the recent Bluebird first editions reissue of The Bridge, and to my ears the sound of the Japanese reissue was the most detailed, transparent and musical of them all, with the recent Bluebird a close second. The Classic CD sounded muffled and dated, and I didn't like the sound of the French reissue at all; I sold the Classic and French CDs and kept the other two. I re-assessed the Classic Record gold CD (which I re-bought), the Japanese 24-bit reissue and the Bluebird "First Editions" remaster a few months ago on my current system, which differs quite a bit from the one I had back in 2003, and my preferences changed too: I now prefer the Classics CD, which sounds much better than I remembered, and I ditched the Japanese disc, which now sounded too harsh in comparison. The Bluebird is still my second choice.
