I also posted this thread on another forum, and this is the first reply: "IIRC, there are two versions. I own the latest one, which claims to be 'remastered'. I dont know if both versions sound the same. If you are familar with the Sony Legacy editions of Duke's albums ('Blues in Orbit', "Masterpieces', etc). that's the sound what you are getting here. Except for the first tracks on disc one. Those are a disgrace. Horrible sound smothered in noise reduction. I dont think Sony bothered to remaster those for this box, they just took whatever was on those awful sounding late 80's /early 90's transfers and pasted them in the box." Any comments, especially regarding the noise reduction?
-
The Sony Ellington box The Duke: The Columbia Years 1927-1962 has undoubtedly been discussed here before, but various searches didn't turn up anything... How's the box, a hodgepodge or a carefully selected compilation, and how's the sound, any use of noise reduction or any other mastering artefacts?

Anyone get the new Woody Herman Columbia?
J.A.W. replied to BruceH's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So I take it that's the Mosaic Single this thread is about, not the 2004 set. Thanks for clearing that up. -

Are you referring to the Herman Columbia set on Mosaic MD7-223 in the title of this thread? That's not a new set, it was released in the summer of 2004. -
Don't know about that, I've never heard it. I did listen to Jimmy Scott's earlier Savoy recordings, and his work is not really my cup of tea.
-
This is it. It was another Rhino Handmade that is most likely long out of print now. It is a beautiful album, one of Scott's best (IMO). Already mentioned in post #24.
-
Is this the one you had in mind: Bill Barron - Modern Windows Suite - Savoy
-
Jimmy Scott Handmade (OOP), also listed here: Rhino Handmade catalog (see also my post #19 above)

Chu Berry Mosaic Has Entered the Building
J.A.W. replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Mosaic's Scott Wenzel just told me they hope to release the Chu Berry set in about two weeks. -
Rhino Handmade did ship the Mayfield to Europe, I got it directly from them.

I agree. He didn't make many recordings as a leader, and those two are the best

Should I thank you for that? Exactly. And by the way, I had nothing to do with it. Your (eeegor's) insinuation is totally out of order. -
This is one of three later-period Farmer gems with Clifford Jordan, the other ones being Something to Live For, a tribute to Billy Strayhorn, and Ph.D., which features Kenny Burrell. Blame It on My Youth, with Jordan, James Williams (piano), Rufus Reid (bass) and Victor Lewis (drums), is the masterpiece of the three in my opinion. Get them while you can, before they are deleted by Concord. It all depends how you define "later-period". I have a number of other CDs by Art Farmer with Clifford Jordan that should also be mentioned. The three Contemporary CDs I was referring to were recorded in the late 1980s, hence "later-period", as opposed to his 1950s-1960s work.

North, South, East... Wess was reissued on CD. As far as I know the Phil Urso and Marzette Watts were not.

Does it contain the 2 extra tracks? They are really fine. Which extra tracks? The Japanese remaster TOCJ 6560 and all other CD reissues of Smithville that I know of have only 5 tracks. "Tunesmith" and "Au Privave" . First Issued on "The Other Side of the 1500 Series " ( Japan) . Thanks.
