  1. Don't you like this one, Gökhan? To my ears Lupu's one of the better "modern" Schubert interpreters.

    New Miles Box?

Re: Hoffman -- I've been quite pleased with the sound of the Miles XRCDs and hadn't thought about investing in the DCC versions -- until, that is, a few days ago when I heard his Evans 'Interplay' re-mastering. Woah!! I might need to saddle up and start tracking down some of those Miles (and Evans) ones. You won't be disappointed, the Hoffman remasters smoke all other versions I've heard (OJC, K2, XRCD, etc.). They're pretty expensive, though - if you can find them, that is; they've been OOP since the demise of DCC and are getting scarcer by the day.
  3. Can't say anything about the current political climate in Paris, I'll leave that up to Brownie. As for the "real" climate, in my experience spring is an excellent time to visit Paris, though early April might still be a little too early. Temperatures average about 10-15C/50-60F, though we (in NW Europe) have had a long winter this year, which only ended last week. Anyway, have fun!
  4. Couw is away until later this month.
  5. Well, I think the Ace- and ZYX/Mikulski-issued CDs with Fantasy-owned material are (officially) OOP from the date the licensing agreement ended, but that doesn't mean they're no longer available. The same thing happened when Ace's license to release Excello blues/R&B material expired for a short while a few years ago, they immediately stopped issuing/supplying those CDs but the discs were still widely available.

    New Miles Box?

Don't need this set, I'm perfectly happy with my excellent Steve Hoffman remasters on DCC.
  7. Sad news...
  8. The set just moved to "last chance" - see also this thread.
  9. I'm glad these won't be RVGs, I just hope the remasterings will be OK
  10. In my experience that depends on who remastered them. If it's Ron McMaster, well...
  11. It's already been bid on, so changing the title or description is no longer possible. The only thing you can do now to rectify things is cancel the auction and relist the set.
  12. Ditto here for the Evans reissue (about time). I am listening to "Lester Leaps In" from New Bottle Old Wine and either it's my computer speakers or when the band is blasting it sounds like an old LP, so let's hope for that sonic upgrade. F I've read somewhere (forgot where) that the tapes were in a pretty poor condition, so I don't think a sonic upgrade will be possible. Let's hope it'll not turn out to be a sonic downgrade, with lots of compression, loudness and high-end boost... I just heard back from Michael Cuscuna about the sound on the Evans CD. He replied: "The old CDs were from stereo tapes. There were a lot of drop-outs in Great Jazz Standards, but I found the three-tracks and that eliminated that problem. The sound is improved, but both of those sessions were strange recordings. Some unusual balance choices and sudden peak distortions. A real drag because the music is so unbelievably great. We did the best we could." So I would think at least "Great Jazz Standards" ought to be improved since they used the original 3 track masters? Kevin Kevin, Thanks for the info. Could you please ask Michael who mastered this batch of Connoisseurs?

  14. No, it doesn't bother me at all, as I usually don't scroll to the bottom of a page when there is nothing there to read. Doesn't bother me either.
  15. Objectively speaking there are still major holes in my collection, but I don't intend to fill them, as the artists involved don't do anything for me.
  16. Jim, When you've already voted in the earlier poll, you can't vote again in the added poll.
  17. He did some good stuff with Lee Konitz (...) That's an understatement Prime example: Marsh's Atlantic recordings - some of which are with Lee Konitz.
  18. Why not ask them: questions@cdconnection.com.
  19. No computer skills here, but would it be possible to include cdconnection.com as well? Their prices and shipping rates are also very attractive, and their customer service is OK.

    Funny Rat

I left the crew a while ago, though...
  21. Filling holes in my collection left a big, big hole in my wallet...
