  1. You're right, I don't want them There's talk that old perm-head might be replacing Gergiev at the LSO. Not sure that's something I could easily get used to... I don't care for either of them. Sold all my Gergievs and the only perm-head I still have is his Mahler 10 (the Deryck Cooke version) with the Berlin Philharmonic.
  2. I have many of the Sviatoslav Richter "Authorised Recordings" sets that Philips put out years ago. Assuming the new Decca box contains this stuff, it's highly recommended - but I know that some find his playing hard to stomach; I'm not one of them The Clifford Curzon box is wonderful, even though it contains a few questionable orchestral performances. As I've said ad nauseam here he's one of my all-time favourite pianists. You're right, I don't want them
  3. Probably the latter. I have the earlier version; that one was mastered by Gene Paul.
  4. You need a new cup I'm afraid that won't do the trick I've tried since the 1960s and it never really worked for me. Hard for me to wrap around my mind about that ... his playing is very touching and direct to me. Straight to the heart of it (and of me, too). But vive la différence and all that ... The main reason is that I really dislike his saxophone tone, but I'm not too fond of his playing on other instruments either.

  6. Lateef's playing wasn't really my cup of tea, but this is sad news.
  7. Concerto consists of four or five interconnected buildings. Second hand is at the far left. I agree about the omnipresence of EU PD releases. It's one of the reasons I no longer go to Amsterdam specifically to browse their bins. It's also the reason I hardly ever support them anymore by placing online orders. They can go out of business for all I care, really. This means you're basically not going to find any Dutch jazz CD store agreeable, except for the Jazz Center in The Hague. ...and they are expensive - at least they were when I last ordered from them years ago, before board member Bluerein took over from its former owner.
  8. Found that too. Didn't post it because it's in Dutch... I don't have a problem with that

Thanks for posting that link. Sad news, I loved his playing.

Is All About Jazz a social medium? Well, its forum can be regarded as one. By the way, the link in your first post doesn't work anymore, at least not on my computer. I can't find anything on the internet confirming this, no newspaper site (either American or German), no magazine site, nothing.

    Herb Geller RIP

Has it been confirmed on a "non-social media" site yet? I think we should be very careful with messages like these after the Horace Silver debacle.
  12. I tried to access the board several times today and got various error messages. Did anyone else have this problem?
  13. Thanks Flurin. This is really sad news. I love his 1950s dates.
  14. Has this news been confirmed yet?
  15. http://www.wsmv.com/story/24226033/country-star-ray-price-dies-at-87 He made some great honky-tonk recordings in the 1950s.
  16. Not my cup of tea.
  17. Thanks. I did a search with "Bihari", but got no results. As far as I'm concerned this thread can be locked.
  18. I don't know if this has been posted before; I did a search, but didn't find anything. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/12/arts/music/joe-bihari-who-put-early-rb-on-record-dies-at-88.html?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=edit_th_20131212&_r=0

  21. Not that old cliché again... Not a cliche for me.YMMV. OK. I guess too many Americans have asked me if we're all still wearing wooden shoes. It's a persistent fairytale. Seriously? Seriously.

  24. And the great 1959, 1961 and 1963-1965 recordings with Paul Desmond on Warner Bros. and RCA, and his Pacific Jazz dates, Jazz Guitar and Good Friday Blues - The Modest Jazz Trio. Forgot Desmond. Have edited post. He not only recorded with Desmond in the period you mentioned, but also after 1962. I know. I've got the discs!
