  1. Yep, that big Ashkenazy Decca box is a mishmash of great, not-so-great and so-so recordings, all in the order they were released on LP, with a few bonus tracks. I prefer his sets-by-composer, they're much more accessible.
  2. Decca will release a Vladimir Ashkenazy box on February 3 with most of his Rachmaninov piano recordings for Decca - quickly checked the tracklisting and it seems the piano concerti with André Previn are not included; instead, the box has the concerti with Bernard Haitink: http://www.deccaclassics.com/en/cat/4786348? The box has 11 CDs and the current price on Amazon U.K. is £29.56 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00GU3Q3M0/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
  3. I find this website a bit confusing.... several cds I looked at do not indicate out of stock, but at the bottom of the listing it has a box to "notify me when back in stock" or some such language.... I guess that means out of stock? When it says "unavailable" right next to the item it means that it can't be (pre-)ordered from them yet. When you tick the "notify me when back in stock" box and give them your e-mail address they'll let you know when it's available. I was looking at Henderson's State of the Tenor cds - I do not see "unavailable" next to the items and I see they came out months ago and yet it says further down below the item "notify me when back in stock" I do not get it... what am I missing? Thanks I clicked on the link you posted and the discs on that page were marked "unavailable". When you search for Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor on their site you will find that 2 of the 3 discs listed (2 of them Japanese) are in stock and ship "within 24 hours", the other one in "5 to 10 days" - I guess that's the one with the "notify me when back in stock" box when you try to order it.

  5. The Sviatoslav Richter box is now available from Amazon Germany for 57 euros plus change: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00GYHSYW4/ref=ox_ya_os_product That's quite cheap for 33 CDs.
  6. Just listened to Z.T.'s Blues again. To my ears it's a nice "late-night" date, not bad but nothing special.
  7. Can't remember, too long ago since I last heard it.
  8. Any info on the sources that were used, other than the Horace Henderson session Steve mentioned?
  9. What took you so long?
  10. Now I'm dizzy...
  11. Pity, I was just going to...
  12. Is Jazzmessengers.com in the EU? They are based in Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain. Catalunya may be forced to leave the European Union depending on the outcome of a possible referendum on its independence, but for the moment they are still in the EU. Same goes for Scotland, by the way, they may have to leave the EU if they vote for independence later this year.
  13. This is the problem I have with him, his work is forever tainted by his descent into the vile bile of anti-semitism. As a European, with our history, we need no excuse from poets or anyone else encouraging this. For that reason I am totally turned-off from exploring the works of Baraka further. Which is probably a shame, because I see a lot of positive comments on here, but he strayed too far from the spirit of jazz and the light for my comfort. Totally agreed.
  14. Typical corny Parlophone artwork of the time
  15. Thanks. I'm not really a purist, but I don't like "loud". Taking into account that we almost always disagree on sound, I think there's a chance I might not like the latest Japanese reissues. Anyway, thanks again.
  16. Thanks. Has anyone been able to compare the masterings?
  17. Do those Japanese Bethlehem reissues have the same masterings as their U.S. counterparts?
  18. According to CDJapan many of the Japanese Bethlehem reissues are already OOP.

  22. Several additions to the "Running Low" list: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/lastchance.asp (Bobby Hackett, Woody Herman Columbia, Jazz Crusaders, Dizzy Gillespie)
  23. You're welcome. I'd pick the Berry plus Hawk and Ellington, but it's your wallet, not mine
  24. I'd go for the full Ellington band Mosaic first, then probably the Hawk. Sadly, they are all good sets The Chu Berry Mosaic is on "Last Chance", so why not pick up that one first? It might be gone soon: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/lastchance.asp.
  25. Beware of more recent Black Lion reissues, though, they're all riddled with heavy noise reduction. The music really does suffer.
