It's all over the news here. I'm very sorry to hear this. He was one of my favourite Mahler conductors.
-
Well, if there's a pianist whose work I absolutely detest, it's the late Mr Gould. Horrendous. As for Richter, in my view he's best heard in post-Mozart works, though I don't think his Haydn and Mozart are that bad. His pre-Haydn stuff is best avoided like the plague
-
The only Bach interpretations I can stand these days are HIP, and secular only
-
I think this is one where I will pass. I just tend to prefer his non-solo work, as well as tending to think that his earlier work with Russian orchestras (on the Russian Classics series) is preferable. That's funny, I tend to prefer Richter's later recordings, especially his post-Bach solo work. Besides, I can't stand the generally poor sonics of the Russian recordings and the rough playing of many Russian orchestras of the time.

The Sviatoslav Richter box is now available from Amazon Germany for 57 euros plus change: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00GYHSYW4/ref=ox_ya_os_product That's quite cheap for 33 CDs. That disappeared pretty quickly! I immediately ordered it at that price; the order hasn't been cancelled (yet) even though the box is now indeed listed as unavailable.

Thanks for posting this. I'm in. It's already listed on Amazon Germany and Amazon U.K. with a March 21 release date: http://www.amazon.de/Miles-Fillmore-Davis-1970-Bootl/dp/B00HSCDX70/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1389999530&sr=1-1&keywords=miles+davis+fillmore and http://www.amazon.co.uk/Miles-The-Fillmore-Bootleg-Series/dp/B00HSCDX70/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389999672&sr=8-1&keywords=B00HSCDX70

His Rachmaninov solo piano work is excellent in my view, and so is his Chopin. I also like his Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin with Itzhak Perlman and his Beethoven sonatas for piano and cello with Lynn Harrell, his Brahms sonatas for violin and piano, also with Itzhak Perlman, his "Russian Sonatas" set with Lynn Harrell, his Sibelius symphonies with the Philharmonia Orchestra and his Prokofiev piano concerti with Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra.

The original poster is looking for the CD, not the LP - see the thread title.

This was released on CD in Japan in 2009. Good luck with your search. http://www.amazon.co.jp/ウォーン・アウト-5-ウォーン・マーシュ/dp/B002TK1VCK/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1389920950&sr=1-1&keywords=warne+marsh+warne+out There are a few very expensive copies on Amazon U.K.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=B002TK1VCK and Amazon France: http://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_fr_FR=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=B002TK1VCK

Just saw that the Ashkenazy Rachmaninov box also includes the piano pieces for 4 and 6 hands and Rachmaninov's arrangements of other composers' works. I'm not keen on those. Then there's the question which versions of the piano concerti are preferable (excluding Ashkenazy's early Russian versions), the earlier ones with Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra or the later ones with Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra (the ones in the box). I've never been able to compare them, but many people seem to prefer the earlier concerti with Previn, which I have.
-
Yep, that big Ashkenazy Decca box is a mishmash of great, not-so-great and so-so recordings, all in the order they were released on LP, with a few bonus tracks. I prefer his sets-by-composer, they're much more accessible.
-
Decca will release a Vladimir Ashkenazy box on February 3 with most of his Rachmaninov piano recordings for Decca - quickly checked the tracklisting and it seems the piano concerti with André Previn are not included; instead, the box has the concerti with Bernard Haitink: http://www.deccaclassics.com/en/cat/4786348? The box has 11 CDs and the current price on Amazon U.K. is £29.56 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00GU3Q3M0/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

I find this website a bit confusing.... several cds I looked at do not indicate out of stock, but at the bottom of the listing it has a box to "notify me when back in stock" or some such language.... I guess that means out of stock? When it says "unavailable" right next to the item it means that it can't be (pre-)ordered from them yet. When you tick the "notify me when back in stock" box and give them your e-mail address they'll let you know when it's available. I was looking at Henderson's State of the Tenor cds - I do not see "unavailable" next to the items and I see they came out months ago and yet it says further down below the item "notify me when back in stock" I do not get it... what am I missing? Thanks I clicked on the link you posted and the discs on that page were marked "unavailable". When you search for Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor on their site you will find that 2 of the 3 discs listed (2 of them Japanese) are in stock and ship "within 24 hours", the other one in "5 to 10 days" - I guess that's the one with the "notify me when back in stock" box when you try to order it.

Just listened to Z.T.'s Blues again. To my ears it's a nice "late-night" date, not bad but nothing special.
-
Can't remember, too long ago since I last heard it.
-
Any info on the sources that were used, other than the Horace Henderson session Steve mentioned?
-
Pity, I was just going to...

Is Jazzmessengers.com in the EU? They are based in Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain. Catalunya may be forced to leave the European Union depending on the outcome of a possible referendum on its independence, but for the moment they are still in the EU. Same goes for Scotland, by the way, they may have to leave the EU if they vote for independence later this year.

This is the problem I have with him, his work is forever tainted by his descent into the vile bile of anti-semitism. As a European, with our history, we need no excuse from poets or anyone else encouraging this. For that reason I am totally turned-off from exploring the works of Baraka further. Which is probably a shame, because I see a lot of positive comments on here, but he strayed too far from the spirit of jazz and the light for my comfort. Totally agreed.
