I'm not particularly fond of Guillermo Gregorio's albums, but this one's not bad: . Mat Maneri is great, but I could do without Pandelis Karayorgis' piano in some parts, where it sounds strangely out of place.

Well, Chambers' playing is not a good benchmark for "straight jazz" bowing (since it's pretty poor) - Richard Davis is the man. David Izenson also. If memory serves, Doug Watkins also played rather good bowed bass. Anyway, he was a terrific (straight) bass player. Thanks for the recommendation, but Was Da Ist is quite enough bass for me, at least for now...

I'm now listening to disc 1 of a set many people don't seem to like and I'm enjoying every minute of it - but hey, I'm a Crispell fan!

The bowed parts are not the problem here, since they - or at least most of them - are not off-key. In fact, they sound great, at least on my system (electrostatics with an excellent REL subwoofer). It's the first and last tracks where Kowald is "humming" (or should I say "growling") along and a few of the early tracks I'm having problems with. Strange thing is, I like bowed bass much better in free / improv than in straight jazz. For instance, I can't stand Paul Chambers' bowed bass, which is almost always out of tune.

This is an absolutely beautiful album, one of my all-time favorites:

Ubu mentioned this 2CD-set a while ago: I've only listened to the studio disc so far (will play the live disc this weekend), and I think it's one of Parker's better recordings. The interplay between Parker and Guy is perfect. The mood of this disc is very intense, yet relaxing. I will be returning to it often. Highly recommended!

Well, Tony likes it. Like I said before, there's something in Douglas' playing that annoys me very much, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm not too fond of Shepik's sound either; it's not Shepik, I don't like that guitar sound in general.

Wonder what Creedence Clearwater Revival's John Fogerty's reply would be... Hans I don't know if you remember this but on Fogerty's album "Centerfield" he recorded a song called "Zans Can't Dance".It was not complimentary. Zaents was not amused and he sued Fogerty and as a result Fogerty was forced to recut the song as "Vanz Can't Dance" and subsequent "Centerfield" albums had the recut and retitled version on it. Thanks, but that was what I was referring to. Maybe I should have included a smilie.
