NEW!!! Blue Note Europe Bulletin Board
J.A.W. replied to Aftab's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Wonder how long it'll last: click here... -
I did get all the Japanese Jazztet reissues... Oh well, the Mosaic set will probably have more material by this great band.
-
I have the two CDs I listed, and took the info from the booklets.

has the board been runnin' ssssllllooooowww

I think it was generous of AAJ's Mike Ricci to tolerate the thread as long as he did. I very much doubt he'll tolerate threads pimping other boards again. -
Penguin Guide to Jazz Diffs
J.A.W. replied to a topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The sixth edition was published in 2002, so I'm guessing there'll be a new Penguin Guide this year (they're publishing one every other year). -

Yep, it sure does! -

Off topic (but only slightly): AAJ has deleted the "Organissimo down" thread. -
You probably posted something they didn't quite like, and they wanted to know more details before deciding whether or not to give you the boot in a week or so... Suppose you were one of Steve H's relatives, they daren't touch those, of course

I just got this SACD: and the CD-layer turned out to be a disappointment. It sounds pretty bad, even worse than the Fantasy K2 I have (let me hasten to add: to my ears and on my system ). It was never one of Riverside's better recordings, but I had not expected the CD-layer of the SACD to sound as bad as this. I'm guessing the master tape has deteriorated badly over time, or this wasn't one of Fantasy's better remastering jobs. Pity. Edit: I just realized I completely disagree with Claude on this one. Isn't it fun, all these various and diverse opinions and perceptions! Another edit: let there be no misunderstanding: the music is essential in my opinion Final edit: I'm playing the discs on Mark Levinson-fed electrostatic speakers and a REL subwoofer.
-
Yep, you post one even remotely critical remark and you're kicked off the SH board...
-
Exactly my thoughts.
-
Which goes to show how different perceptions and personal tastes are... I find most MFSL and DCC remasters I've heard dull and veiled, and I much prefer (Digital) K2s and the latest XRCD remasters. I agree with Claude on the Fantasy SACDs, though, they're warm yet very detailed and transparent. The Gil Evans SACD is absolutely wonderful. (All "to my ears and on my system", of course )

Uh oh... -
You're absolutely right. My comparisons, though done with volume adjustments, are as subjective as can be, and they are certainly no proof that the SACDs are indeed better. Maybe I should have added that they sounded better to my (ageing) ears and on my system, and that it's always very much a matter of personal taste. When I was comparing the various versions, however, I was hoping that my XRCDs and K2 would sound just as good as, if not better than the SACDs, so I could sell the latter to an SACD-loving friend of mine...
-
CDUniverse is selling them for $16.89 at the moment. They may not be the cheapest, but they're fast and reliable.
-
Relax Scott , the only SACD CD-layer / mini-LP K2 comparison I did was the Dolphy (the others were SACD CD-layer / XRCD), and there the CD-layer of the SACD is only marginally better - on my system.
-
The auction got the bidder "lepianiste" to bid against himself to get over the reserve. Greater fool theory. Once the reserve is met upping his bid won't affect the maximum bid as long as he's the high bidder.
-
And you're right, of course!
-
Hmm, I'm really happy with my TOCJs - with the exception of Contours, which wasn't available as a TOCJ.
-
Another comparison, the CD layer of and my XRCD version. The SACD sounds much better, especially in the mid-high region.
-
I've just compared the CD layer of and my Japanese 20-bit Digital K2 remastered version, and the SACD is a bit warmer and more detailed, but the differences are very minor.
