Ocium is one of the European public-domain labels that don't have access to original sources like master tapes. Their Bennie Green CD is still regularly available in Europe. Amazon U.K.

According to the Bruyninckx discography Sugan (July 19, 1957) was a Phil Woods date; Ruppli's Prestige discography lists Garland as co-leader. 1957 was the turning point for me too as far as Woods is concerned. His Epic date Warm Woods from that year is the last one I really like.

Not only are they expensive, but the AP/impulse! SACDs are also missing the bonus tracks that appeared on the mid- to late 1990s digipak impulse! CD reissues. The AP/Blue Note SACDs do have the bonus tracks that appeared on the 1980s/1990s CD reissues.

The AP/Blue Note SACDs have been discussed here before. They sound OK, but in my opinion they're way overpriced. $20 would have been a good price. The NKC SACDs are hideously expensive.

Sure, I agree, but there are enough interesting moments in the music for me to enjoy parts of it (hm, that probably says something about my musical taste... )

I have the complete Haitink cycle with the LPO and the CGO on individual CDs, Ashkenazy's interpretation of the 5th with the RPO, Previn with the LSO in No.6 and Karajan with the BPO in No.10. Shostakovich's symphonies are definitely a mixed bag, but I'm not so negative as David - I guess I'm a bit more tolerant of some of the "film music" aspects of his work and the influence the pressure (euphemistically put) from the Soviet authorities may have had on it. The Haitink, Previn and Karajan interpretations are regarded by some as being "too smooth, too Western." I don't mind, many Russian versions I've heard often sounded too "raw" to me.
