Scott Wenzel told me the Webb/Fitzgerald won't be released until late 2012. Is Mosaic still not charging for pre-orders until they actually ship? I know they didn't in the past, but when their financials are not as strong as they may have once been, that would be a way to maintain some cash flow. They still don't charge your credit card until the order ships, but orders that use PayPal as payment option are charged when they are placed - as is always the case when PayPal is used.

And another thread threatens to become a war zone... Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I wonder why feelings often get so heated when it comes to audio formats - which is why I suggested earlier to focus on the music.

Hoffman was hired to do the mastering of a number of SACDs by Acoustic Sound's owner Chad Kassem, but I'm not sure if that makes him an SACD advocate - if that's what you mean. But you're right, let's focus on the music.

An SACD or a DVD-A would be much more expensive to manufacture and it would jack up the price, making it an even more niche product than it already is. And I could be wrong, of course, but I don't think there are many people who like this kind of music and own an SACD or DVD-A player.

I have ordered a few times from Amazon Japan and from third party sellers on Amazon Japan (note that most of them don't ship outside Japan) and I've never had any problems. Their shipping rates are pretty high, though not as steep has HMV Japan's. Member "bluerein" offered me that disc a few years ago, at a pretty high price. I didn't take him up on his offer. That depends on how you define "bootleg" (I think this is a good definition: "a recording of a performance that was not authorized by the artist"), but you're right, Fresh Sound and other European public-domain releases are indeed illegit in the United States as far as they're not yet in the public domain in the United States at the time of release.

Fresh Sound and other European labels like that are releasing recordings the artists originally gave permission for that are now in the public domain in Europe and therefore legit there. They're not bootlegs. Releases of live recordings the artists never gave permission for are bootlegs. When I was still a moderator forum rule 7 was also aimed at selling bootlegs.

Earlier today I listened to most of the music that's included in the set for the first time in years (I still have the individual CDs) and decided not to take Mike up on his offer, so if anyone's interested, go ahead and contact him. I agree with Mike. On the January 17, 1961 session that was later issued as Redd's Blues the playing is sloppy; it's not a very good date, no wonder Blue Note didn't originally release it. The August 13, 1960 date which was released as Shades of Redd is the best of all the sessions in the set, even though, as Mike said, Redd's comping leaves quite a bit to be desired. McLean's tone certainly is an acquired taste and it took me a long time to get used to it, but now I don't have problems with it anymore.

To add to my previous post: I sincerely hope Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Chelsea, Manchester City and all those other clubs with huge debts will be banned from European competitions by UEFA until they have sorted things out in line with UEFA's financial fair play scheme, which will come into effect with the 2012-2013 season.

I'm glad neither of them got through to the final. The success of Spanish clubs (and English clubs too, for that matter) is built on huge debt. The current situation is extremely unfair; football associations in other countries (Germany, Netherlands) have very strict rules when it comes to financial control of and within their clubs, but in Spain hardly anyone seems to be doing anything about it - yes, UEFA are trying on a European level with their financial fair play scheme, but whether they will have the courage to ban debt-ridden clubs from the Champions League and the Europa League remains to be seen.

Ocium is one of the European public-domain labels that don't have access to original sources like master tapes. Their Bennie Green CD is still regularly available in Europe. Amazon U.K.

According to the Bruyninckx discography Sugan (July 19, 1957) was a Phil Woods date; Ruppli's Prestige discography lists Garland as co-leader. 1957 was the turning point for me too as far as Woods is concerned. His Epic date Warm Woods from that year is the last one I really like.

For those who aren't familiar with the Fresh Sound CD Allen is referring to, it is a collection of tracks from various albums.
