    Julius Hemphill

I'm very fond of it myself. Raw Materials and Residuals as well, from about the same time. Then again, I like all things Hemphill. Just listened to Raw Materials and Residuals and it's indeed excellent.
  2. I thought English was the forum's language, not German. Not everyone here speaks or reads German. Können Sie Deutschen nicht lesen? I do read and speak German (ich lese und spreche Deutsch), but not everyone here does and English is the forum's language; I think everyone should post in English, if only as a courtesy to others.

  4. Probably a boot.
  5. Maybe a separate forum, "The Grim Reaper Strikes Again", should be created.

Reviving this old thread for (hopefully) some more discussion on Hemphill's albums. The only one I have is the recently released (on CD) Dogon A.D. and like it very much. Another one I'm thinking of getting is Flat-Out Jump Suite on Black Saint; I've never heard it and read a couple of conflicting reviews, one pretty bad and one very positive, calling it "a masterpiece" (not my words). Any opinions on that one?
  7. MG is still a moderator here
  8. Whoa, that's bad news. I've just been listening to a few albums with him as a sideman. Very sad.
  9. Slightly off-topic: Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was killed in Rotterdam, Netherlands, today. His younger brother is the murder suspect.
  10. The Complete Count Basie Verve Fifties Studio Recordings Mosaic 8CD-set is now running low.
  11. That doesn't sound good to me. As I mentioned earlier I don't like the sound on the Muddy Waters sets; to my ears it's too pumped-up and loud, it gives me headaches. Turning the volume down doesn't help, it still doesn't sound good to me. To explain further: to my ears the sound on those Muddy Waters sets is "right and in-your-face but lacking warmth and atmosphere", to use the apt description in this thread. Many "modern" remasters sound like that.
  12. I have posted on occasion that I don't agree with your sonic assessments, but I maintain that I never criticize your taste, equipment, etc.
  13. So you keep saying. A few years ago you told me you adapted your system in such a way that it softens the effects of boosted remasters such as RVGs (it tones down boosted highs etc.) I chose another route, as I prefer to listen to CDs as they are (some are excellent, some are OK, and some are bad or even awful.) Perhaps you could respect that and not criticize someone else's system. I could do without your patronizing advice. I almost never agree with your sonic preferences, but I never criticize your taste and your system and whatever you did with it.
  14. That doesn't sound good to me. As I mentioned earlier I don't like the sound on the Muddy Waters sets; to my ears it's too pumped-up and loud, it gives me headaches. Turning the volume down doesn't help, it still doesn't sound good to me.
  15. Unless recordings are "restored" in such a way that they become unlistenable (at least to my ears), for instance as a result of heavy noise reduction, boosted highs, etc.
  16. Read my post again: I said about pre-bop and post-mid 1960s jazz that "those eras have been more or less neglected in comparison with 1950s-mid 1960s jazz." For instance, from the 1980s until a few years ago EMI/Blue Note and Fantasy/OJC have reissued loads of jazz recordings that were made in the 1950s and 1960s, and I don't think jazz recordings from other eras have had the same exposure during those years.
  17. The "Euro Mosaics" (the ones with Argo/Mercury/Norgran/Clef/Verve material) were issued by Universal, not EMI. This was before the former bought the latter, of course
  18. The release date of the Hawkins set has been put back until mid/late December. No idea why it is delayed.
  19. Good news for Pogo fans: Pogo: The Complete Daily & Sunday Comic Strips Vol. 1: "Into the Wild Blue Wonder" has finally been published, years after it was first announced. Can't wait.
  20. You will note that my repost with the CD tracklisting (with the bonus tracks) in post #66 was in response to Dan Gould's observation in post #65: "if there is extra music on this reissue then its definitely more than worth it. " Amazing that J.A.W. is quick to jump down peoples throats. Great atmosphere on this board. Thanks. You could have referred to your earlier post Anyway, I was just wondering why you re-posted the info, that's all. No big deal, and I have no interest whatsoever to jump down your throat, or anybody else's for that matter. Relax.
  21. You already posted that (your post #59)
  22. They had 40+ copies when I posted this, but it's now on back order again...
  23. Earlier thread about this
  24. Sigiswald Kuijken is not Dutch, he's from Belgium (Flanders, to be exact).
  25. ImportCDs has a few copies available on a "first come, first serve"-basis for only $12.55 each plus shipping.
