I think I know what you are looking for, but I don't think I have anything that REALLY fits the mold. I would say some Henry Threadgill gets in there. There's a number of things with vibes that would fit more into what The Magnificent was posting. This is a very good album, wasn't at the top of mind when I read your topic, but I think I have recommended it to you in the past: Now, there is an electric guitar plugged in on a couple of tracks, maybe just one, but for the most part, this is all acoustic. BTW, the vibraphone does not need to be plugged in to make a sound. It is an acoustic instrument. What you are plugging in is a motor that spins fans in your resonators to create the vibrato effect. Many vibists never use the motor. In some ways, I would think O'Neals Porch has all-acoustic grease qualities to it. Same way Natural Essence would though, I guess. I'm curious to see which direction this thread goes. I bet adamommy has some good recommendations for this thread.

Alright. Back to the random feature. Last night I hit shuffle, then play in itunes and got to work. First song, "Baby's Home" The Lemonheads. Tonight I hit shuffle, then play in itunes and got to work. First song, "Baby's Home" The Lemonheads. Smart Shuffle is set right down the middle. I have 99.58GB in itunes all ripped 256k vbr. Sounds like a positive vibe blowing through Chicago! Sounds like people are having fun. I've still never been, but my brother was up there last weekend finishing up in a studio and went to hear Ted Sirota's Jazz Rebels one night. Back in December, they went to hear a different band every night. It just sounds like a healthy scene. I love the thought of it.

Just curious. I know there are a handful of people here who review jazz records. Do any of you also review non-jazz records?

Couldn't he just have his main pair going into speaker a, a speaker selector going into speaker b, and the remaining four pair going into that speaker selector?

Maybe under the right dj's hands. I just listened. It only really synches up nicely for about 5 or 10 seconds before falling apart. A dj could sustain that OTC vibe for while though. Every time the page loads for me, BOTH clips play at the same time - automatically. I did listen to each separately (and they're both cool), but --- DAMN --- together, that's one beautiful fucked up mess!!!

My copy is in the mail. I don't know if this is a good representation of what is really happening in Chicago right now or not, but that was the idea behind the commission. I like what I hear. I was surprised by his choice in drummer before listening to the music, but listening to the tracks on the TJ site, it made more sense. I hope there is more money in Chicago for projects like this. I'd certainly like to catch this band live.

I need more Warne Marsh. Brilliant...

Man... one of two who chose the trio date. I have most of the others listed here and I think discovering his earlier piano playing after listeing to Cape Verdean, etc. made me jump out of my socks. I certainly don't know all that much about Horace, but it seems like so much of his later stuff, his bandmates could really lean into him as a constant, where in that trio date, they are flying by the seat of their pants to keep up. Go with the underdog GA GA.

Anyone bought this yet? Any Chicagoans seen them perform? I don't recall reading any reviews here. Click here to listen. The Exploding Star Orchestra is, for this recording: Rob Mazurek – Composer, Director Cornet, Electronics Nicole Mitchell – Flutes, Voice Jeb Bishop - Trombone Corey Wilkes - Flugelhorn Josh Berman - Cornet Matt Bauder - Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone Jeff Parker - Guitar Jim Baker – Piano, ARP Synthesizer, Pianette Jason Adasiewicz - Vibraphone John McEntire – Marimba, Tubular Bells, Edits, Recording Engineer Matt Lux - Electric Bass Guitar Jason Ajemian - Acoustic Bass Mike Reed – Drums, Percussion, Saw John Herndon - Drums All compositions, arrangements, text and concepts are by Rob Mazurek unless otherwise noted. In 2005, cornetist Rob Mazurek was approached by The Chicago Cultural Center and the Jazz Institute to put together a group that would represent the more contemporary / avant-garde side of sound in Chicago for a concert in Millennium Park’s Frank Gehry-designed concert hall. The music was conceptualized/composed in Manaus Brazil, Fontevraud, France and Chicago, and developed over more than a dozen performances of the Orchestra before it was recorded by John McEntire at his Soma Studio in Chicago. We Are All From Somewhere Else is comprised of 3 distinct sections, and corresponds to a story involving an exploding star, cosmic transformation, a sting ray, the travels of the sting ray, intelligent conversations with electric eels, the destructive power of humans, the death and ascension of sting ray, the transformation of sting ray ghost to flying bird, and the transformation of bird to phoenix to rocket to flying burning matter to a new-born star.

Charles Tolliver Big Band - "With Love" (due Jan. 16th)
.:.impossible replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
Well, where I'm from, "I reckon" is as common as "hemmin' and hawin'". I glazed right over that one. I reckon I hear it once a day and don't even realize it. -

Yes. Her show is shot on nice stock too. Very cool. Let's hope Oprah doesn't approach her about doing a cooking talk show... oh, and keep the photos coming.

p.s. content over the fiber will be there sooner than later.

Wasn't there a discussion here within the past year or so where someone swore up and down that Verizon was not going fiber to the premise? I'm in Bell South territory. With the recent ATT/Cingular/Bell South conglomeration, I can only imagine what services will be offered in the next five years, fiber to the premise included. Seems the cable providers are losing their advantage, though the Bells are spending a fortune to modernize, realizing that DSL was only temporarily a competitive option. 2Meg up is impressive, especially at a DSL price. I just ran a speakeasy test. My TW Cable connection is running approx 384kb up/5Meg down.

More details please!

No, no. I can tell it was started on the best of intentions. It would have been a good thread, I'm sure. I have a serious question. When did higher learning institutions began teaching jazz. Where was the first jazz department formed? I won't ask why, because I have a feeling it is more complex than that.

I like that guy's sense of rhyhm. Is he a friend of yours? I'm not familiar with his name. Too bad the video cuts there!

Glad I don't remember this. I scanned about six pages before I realized what I was doing. Wasting my time. If there was ever a thread to be deleted, this seems like the head runner.

(edited image) That's funny. I used that word to describe the way a drummer and bassist were hooking up recently as well. I had to go into what slinky sounded like, which I assumed went without saying. I ended up leaving it at "its better than log, which as you well know, is better than bad, its good."

I voted Trio. Hands down. No question.
