Modern Rock - what do you like???
.:.impossible replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I got "Boxer" and I guess I haven't been in the right mood for it yet. Sky Blue Sky is nice. Did you get a DVD with your copy? I think that is a nice touch, to see the band playing the material live in their practice space. No airs about it. Listen guys, I've already cleared this with our gracious host Jim Alfredson... in a few days, I am going to be pre-selling the new full-length album NATIONAL FLAGS by ILAD here at organissimo.org. The discs will be on sale for $12 each, and $2 from each sale will be given to the organissimo.org donations fund. A great way to check out a new release and benefit the board. The way I see it, as musical taste is so subjective, you certainly know someone who will like this disc, even if it isn't you. More to come... just a heads up and thanks. -
As a kid, going to the Richmond Symphony at The Mosque on school field trips, or with my mom, or whomever, my favorite part of the entire experience was sitting out there listening to the orchestra tune. The sensation was almost like a lucid dream, or a fever during a summer storm. The lights were low, the dome ceiling painted like a cloudy sky and a gentle cacophony of finely crafted sounds ebbing, flowing, clashing, and harmonizing in coincidence. My brother and I had a conversation about this a couple of weeks ago. Sure, and you can see her point - at least I can. I mean, the whole point of Free music is that you throw away (many of) the rules previously governing Jazz and attempt to play within a new(ish) frame (make one up). If someone is used to these rules - and nothing else - well, then, it sounds like chaos. Because people aren't acclimatized to it. Of course, then you have all the games that people play around reception, perception and content - which delays that. My sense is that 50 years is about the time it takes to sort these games out. That is to say, Jazz gets acclimatized - over time. And I think the time is about now. But, if she's your wife... Simon Weil

You're right, it's not "free jazz". A lot of what we refer to as "free jazz" isn't really "free"; these days the term is used pretty much interchangeably with "avant-garde jazz". Guy Let's just call it music then.

Can someone explain to me how "free jazz" lacks either melody and/or rhythm? Maybe I am hard-headed. Let's talk about something truly free. Anything you can think of that has a minimal amount of predetermined music. Most of the examples I can think of are built almost primarily on melody and rhythm. Again, maybe I'm being hard-headed. P.S. Over the past few days, people have been citing The All Seeing Eye as "free jazz". To me, that record is very far from free. Aside from solo space, the album is very composed! The horn arrangements are incredible!

I bought an album of their's off of someone here a few years back called "Foxy Music". Definitely worthy of the sexy album covers thread. The music is good. With Eddie Gale on board, I would think it would be more than a curiousity.

oh yeah. you're right. i didn't look it up. the name just popped into my head.

Until reading this post, I had my doubts about "rock" being dead. Now I think I understand what you are saying. Music, on the whole, isn't fucked. Its just confused as hell. Most of it anyway.

I thought of that exact image. Wesley Prince was his name...

A bunch of us camped out on an island north of here this weekend. We grilled up all kinds of deliciousness on an open oak fire.

I didn't notice this thread until just now. I am experiencing the same 'tree' deal. I thought it was because I started the thread I was browsing through t(he AOTW AIR thread from 2003). I thought maybe that was a new feature. Then it happened on the next thread I opened. I am running OS X 10.4.9 and browsing in Firefox 2.0.0.3. Never saw the 'tree' before last night. Niko's fix worked. -

ha! Depends on whether or not you are wearing spandex... Ah, you've discovered my Achilles heel. If I'm not wearing it, I'm thinking about it.

My mom's favorite song of all time. She's a big Rob Thomas fan... I wonder if a different mix of LDS would make the album something entirely different. I think bringing Larry Young and rhythm section out would make a huge difference, and toning the guitars down a bit. I understand this is a guitar album, but I think the music would be better served if the guitars weren't up front. I don't think the music is horrible. How is Laswell's remix of this? Is it a remix, or a REMIX? -

I think it is funny that y'all know the guy's name.

That sounds like it could be fun. I bet you can really haul ass around that place. A lot of kids around here wear heelies. The are shoes with skate wheels on the heel. All they have to do is lean back and roll. As soon as they became popular, they were banned at school, grocery store, Lowe's, etc. They look like fun though. Sliding around behind your mom's grocery cart...

Watermelon - Salted or Not?
.:.impossible replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'd say that boiled peanuts taste most like edamame? Probably the best comparison I can come up with. They are fantastic as long as they're hot. I take them for granted, because people boil them at so many intersections down here, I forget that it is a regional thing. No salt on the watermelon, but I'll take cantelope over watermelon anyway. Never was much of a fan of the texture. Dad loves 'em boiled; I can't stand 'em! Why would you boil peanuts? What do they taste like? Guy Friggin' delicious. Of course, I barely remember what they taste like after I tried them for the first time at age 10, ate at least 4 pounds of the goddamn things in one sitting, and then crawled out of bed at 4 AM and was the most violently ill I've ever been in my life. Haven't touched them since (though that's partly because I've barely spent any time in the Deep South since). It's probably unlikely that overeating made me that sick - more likely I just had a coincidental stomach bug or food poisoning. But the mental association is still there. -

I've noted this similarity to friends before as well, but no one has bitten. Is this a popular sentiment?
