I have and like that one too, and to me, this one is a pretty big step forward. That's just me though. But it's definitely as good by anybody's standards, I'd think. Jim, Just curious what made you grab this new release? Seems like a) people are already ga-ga over Antibalas, or b) following McEntire's name, or c) varying combinations of a) and b). I guess I am c), though I've never been close to ga-ga over Antibalas. I like them, but again, my favorite recording of them is as a horn section on the MMW album. Have you heard this? Eddie Bobe, congas, bata, shekere, bottle and bell DJ Olive, turntables Antibalas horns: Aaron Johnson, trombone, Jordan McLean, trumpet and flugelhorn, Michael Herbst, baritone saxaphone and bass clarinet, Stuart D. Bogie, tenor sax and contra alto clarinet, Todd Simon, trumpet and flugelhorn Col. Bruce Hampton, vocals Danny Blume, guitar, baritone guitar, ambient guitar Brad Roberts, vocals Scotty Hard, Nomad Rhythm Maker, rhythm guitar, turntables and feedback Produced and Engineered By Scotty Hard I *thought* they sounded good on that Mark Ronson/Banksy thing too, but if held to the same standards the you probably hold horn sections to, its a bit of a mess.

re: Antibalas, I think they killed it on MMW Univisible. Scotty Hard dubbed the funk out of that horn section. I'd like to hear him engineer an Antibalas album.

Is that right? I was under the impression that Mazurek was the one who was commissioned for this piece. McEntire does play on this album, but Vandermark doesn't, does he?
-
McEntire is a recording engineer as much as he is anything. His print is all over this thing if you ask me. Personally, I don't understand the criticisms here, but that's not really an issue. John McEntire just recorded and mixed my brother's band this winter for a Spring release. I think he does a hell of a job. He also recently engineered the new Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake album, From the River to the Ocean, also featuring Harrison Bankhead on bass, cello and piano (!), Josh Abrams on bass and guimbri, and Jeff Parker on guitar. Whatever y'all have against him, Fred don't.

Everybody's looking for one. I think this is a positive trend, personally.

Modern Rock - what do you like???

Oh... re: Supper. Is it just me, or is there a real similarity to O'Rourke's Drag City albums from the few years before? -

I agree re: Supper. I personally love that album. "Morality" is such a killer song. A friend of mine just got back from Portugal (The Dead Trio). Apparently Arctic Monkeys is held in very high regard over there. I never gave them any time, confusing them with Snow Patrol. Larry, thanks for the link to Crush, Kill, Destroy. I can get into that. -
Is anyone already on to this? Traneumentary

That's actually kind of cool. I can only imagine what People Pitch sounds like in China. Lots of dance influence throughout as well. That whole scene certainly keeps it interesting. Let me know what you think when you get it! I wonder what Brandon Burke thinks of this one. I know he was into Animal Collective. -

This new Panda Bear album PEOPLE PITCH is fantastic. Unlike the Animal Collective sound, almost entirely. Big, far off reverb on the vocals along with melody much closer to PET SOUNDS. Lots of field recording samples and some interesting production. I would recommend this to most people. There is a 'weirdness' in this music, but I like 'weirdness' just as much as the next guy, so... edit: album title is actually PEOPLE PITCH, not perfect pitch. -
Whoa. That is a real trip. I remember the first time I saw Super Mario Brothers. It took a few years before my brother and I had our own Nintendo... that looks like a lot of fun. Taking drugs to make video games to take drugs to. Or Making video games to take drugs to make video games to.

Hi. I am researching a number of aspects of music promotion with the nearing release date of ILAD National Flags (click on "National Flags" for a sample), and am wondering what experience, if any, y'all might have with the Sonicbids service? I am wondering how truthful this statement is: "With thousands of promoters offering specific opportunities, Sonicbids is quickly becoming the standard for press kit submissions." -from their website, http://www.sonicbids.com/About/ArtistsGetTheDetails.aspx Anyone know anything about this service, or have any actual experience? Thanks. Cary

That Stereotypical Stripper Music, Where Did It Come From?
.:.impossible replied to Werf's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't know the answer to your question, but my Grandfather loves to play Ray Anthony's Dirty Trumpets after a few rounds. Sounds to me like the stereotypical stripper music you are referring to. Its a trip to see him get up and dance! Yes, he keeps his clothes on. -

Al doesn't spend much time on the internet anymore... Happy Birthday anyway! -
I was wondering what everyone here thought of this album! I really like it. Glad to see that Lazaro and Jim are enjoying it. Anyone else? Nicole Mitchell is certainly a stand-out here. I also think Jeff Parker takes some great time and uses some fitting/surprising guitar tones for this music. Jim Baker anyone? I'd love to have heard them perform live prior to this recording.

Yes. I like what I have heard of this so far. The obvious, that I haven't stated yet, is the last Deerhoof disc. Has anyone here been listening to them? The progression of this band is pretty amazing. -

eh... I listened to the entire album this morning and was a little less than impressed. The tunes are good on a random mix (Squeezebox, ipod, whatever), but the album as a whole sounds goofy. I've got a Brookhaven lp from 2001 ~ Everything that rises must rise. I haven't spun it in a while, although I remember thinking it was a little to "consciously experimental" for my taste. I'm heading out of town, but will throw it on when I get back and see how it smacks me now. I also got a compilation from the Oakland? based labeled entitled ~ sons of winded armies | an expel records compilation, I will check that one out again when I have access to my TT. -
How old is this?

Here's the Brookhaven disc I have been checking here and there in the mix: Brookhaven | Transitive Verses Another band I recently discovered, and sort of latched onto because of the name is Seekonk. Anyone familiar with them? Seekonk was the name of the town just over the RI/MA border when we lived in Providence. I've got a Brookhaven lp from 2001 ~ Everything that rises must rise. I came across an instrumental group on emusic a few months back that has been sounding good lately... Brookhaven. Anyone familiar? Not bad ataw. And a small plug... I am super excited about my brother's band's second release, due out late Spring. I'll be sure to bring it up here. I hope y'all will take a listen, maybe even buy a disc or two! ILAD 'National Flags' Recorded and mixed by John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake) at SOMA December 19-23, 2006. It sounds fantastic! -
