I'm sorry Jim.

This is what bbq looks like where I'm from. I had Arthur Bryants this summer. I'm a fan. I also like brisket and think that the KC style is very similar to the Texas style, generally, when compared to the East Coast styles. We don't do much brisket. Virginia and NC have the market cornered if you ask me. Don't make me choose though. Sometimes I'm craving the tomato based sauces, other times I just want that vinegar! Collards and corn puddin, hush puppies. And that's sweet tea by the way. I don't know what else you'd drink with bbq unless the other option is beer. Looks like y'all are just talking about "grillin' out" if you ask me!

What is the backroom?

It really does... always good to see you here Phil!

Ornette also plays a heart-wrenching solo on Joe Henry's SCAR. Brian Blade, Marc Ribot, Meldhau also appear. Great stuff. Thanks Vint!

There isn't a problem.

One album I've been playing alot lately that has gotten some nice response from all sorts of people is Cal Tjader's Cuban Fantasy. Check Claire Fischer on the electric. Very nice playing.

Why? Why not? Hey, I'm not bitching. I'm just saying I'd like to have all of those recordings right there. Wouldn't it be nice? I'm not shelling out the clams for a Japanese reissue just to have a particular sequence. I'm just saying, wouldn't it be nice? Yes. Yes, it would. The more Bags the better.

All that being said, I'd still like to see all of the tracks associated with this title in one place!

Ha! Glad to see an old thread pop up again. It is rare to find a thread that I started! We have moved back down to the mid-Atlantic... southern mid-atlantic really, and the birds are almost entirely different. Wilmington is surrounded by water, wetlands, etc. so we see lots of egrets, crane, etc. We bought a bluebird house over the summer. Apparently bluebird have sort of disappeared from this area over the last ten or fifteen years and there is a push to bring them back. We saw a bunch come through a few weeks after we put the house up. Hopefully they'll be back this winter. The male goes 'apartment hunting' in January/February here and brings his girl to the new place to do what birds do in the summer. Mealworms attract them.

Jimi Hendrix birthday on WKCR Jazz Profiles
.:.impossible replied to 7/4's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I certainly wasn't alive when Jimi was recording, but the first cassette that I ever bought with my own money was an album called 'Band of Gypsies 2'. The tape is worn out now, I was eleven years old then, and haven't come across another copy since. That music was more 'alive' than anything else I was hearing at that time, in 1988. I didn't realize his birthday was yesterday. We had the Experience box set on shuffle on Saturday night. Then we listened to about four more Hendrix albums! Good timing. -
You've got to be shitting me.

Jim, why does it show 'Masterhit' as the Global Moderator? Wasn't that the name of the attack that occurred here way back when? Just checking out My Assistant.

I'll ask him this weekend at Thanksgiving. Somewhere in Chicagotown. Turns out he was on the phone with his daughter/my wife... off Rush St. It was called The O'Plenty's, then A Horse of A Different Color. Sad to say, I've haven't yet made it to Chicago. Been a Cubs fan since I understood the rules of baseball though. Then I moved to New England for a few years and the guys convinced me that I should have an American League team as well. Anyway, nice photos!

Nice. Sometimes I wish I lived landlocked in Middle America. You know, my father in law used to run a bar there.

Who has the loveliest avatar?

I agree. Very cool. Very quiet. Very dignified... but Monk going for the line! Come on! He's wearing a suit for god sake! The way table tennis should be played. Certainly dignified. -

Love that Hal Russell NRG Ensemble album! The ladies are also quite nice. I thought I might get a nomination for my use of pink. -
ok. I would recommend, as a great place to start, checking out 'Requiem For Jack Kirby' under Gregg Bendian's name for some studio magic. I believe this was recorded right around the time you saw him play. Most likely vastly different than what you heard. Now, how's about some more Frisell recs?

Believe me, I'm not trying to get in the middle of this spat, but I'm surprised that you are a musician and assume that Nels Cline is a one trick pony. I've certainly heard some Nels Cline recordings that I didn't like. To name a musician that also has nothing to do with this topic, I've heard some Wayne Shorter recordings that I didn't like. The fact of the matter is, Nels Cline plays a vast array of musics. I don't know what he was playing the nights you saw him, but I'm confident that you are jumping to conclusions in saying Nels Cline is a complete bullshitter, IMHO - lotsa fashionable noise - ...and I know when a musician is faking, like Cline is. And I also play the guitar... I've seen him perform on several occassions; his interviews are impressive, he talks a good game, but has no reall understanding of the musical concepts he is trying to espouse. ...Clines, who I don't like... We don't need a little refresher on music, which is basically a live medium. I don't imply anything other than the fact that three hours of IN PERSON performance really IS NOT enough to go on. I personally wouldn't have the balls to call someone a complete bullshitter based on three hours of performance. As your tone implies, you have a little more insight and insider knowledge on this subject than I. I was just surprised to read that you were basing these accusations on a couple of performances. Knowing what I know about Nels Cline, I would venture to guess that he was experimenting with something new to him. Maybe it didn't work out. The guy obviously isn't faking, based on the vast array of recorded musics he has been a part of. I would honestly suggest checking him out. I personally think he is a fantastic musician. Ribot was mentioned. I think the same of him, though I don't like all of his music. I don't know much about Frisell. I'm hoping this thread continues in that direction. I'd be interested in more recommendations from everyone!
-
You are telling us the guy is a phony based on two performances you attended? You really haven't heard ANY of his albums? And why call David Murray out on a thread about Bill Frisell? The counter-attack at Clem was understandable, but Nels (not Clines), and now a tenor saxophonist entirely unrelated to the topic of conversation? I'm just saying...
-
Dude, Nels Cline is a fake? What? Where is this coming from? What is he faking? I don't understand. Should I sell 'Requiem For Jack Kirby'? I was under the impression that this was a kick-ass album. I guess I'm wrong. Damn fake music. Oh, and watch the ego fellas.

My uncle gave me 'Take Off Your Shoes' for Christmas a few years ago and it went neglected for a while. I'll tell you, that music continued to grow on me and at times, there couldn't be anything better. I'd love to see Cray with my girl. Glad to hear it Ed.

Strangely enough, Money Jungle is missing from the list.

I would love to hear more of John Coltrane in duet context, as well as the multi-percussion context. I would also love to hear more of John Coltrane in a trio format. Think of all of the musicians that he never did record with. Duets with Wayne Shorter, not just practice tapes. Duets with John Gilmore, Fred Anderson, Adam Rudolph, more Jimmy Garrison, maybe a trio with two bassists. The list could go on forever. I cannot speculate as to whether his music would continue to evolve and change at the pace it did in the late 1950s through the late 1960s, but I can imagine the possibilities of growth by moving away from a working ensemble to a more improvisational setting.
