Happy Birthday! Thanks for the radio shows! I've been enjoying the archives! -
Dmitry! Happy Birthday! Enjoy a glass of horseradish vodka... we'll have to catch up next week.

I'm sure she isn't talking about it as "just music" either.

I don't think A LOVE SUPREME was given to John Coltrane by God. I think that A LOVE SUPREME was given to God by John Coltrane. If you, or Branford Marsalis, or (edit: whomever) wants to pay homage to their God, they should do it in their own way. To reinterpret someone else's prayer is, well, not exactly praying is it?

Is Flight To Jordan really on the list? I was listening to this today. I didn't realize that he wrote "I Should Care." What a beautiful song.

Lon, I'm telling you. You have to check out the Hampton Coliseum show that I've been harping on. Jerry's guitar on "Shining Star" is so wonderful. I can't imagine this won't be released. Of course, I like the vintage stuff too. Some people have problems with the guitar tone he developed over the years. Me, not so much.

"... just music..." as clem said, and i quote, "whoa." In my world, A Love Supreme, (not ALS) came after the age of standards. it is not "just music," it is MUSIC. Fucking MUSIC. Are you all so jaded that you don't think of MUSIC as MAGIC anymore? The more I learn about music, the more I believe in its magic. Just a piece of music? Just a piece of music. How do you put a price tag on that one... I saw the Branford DVD in the store the other day and I picked it up. I like to watch music while I listen. What can I say, I'm of that generation. I put it down because all I could think of was Coltrane. I wish I could watch and LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN TO COLTRANE play the real A LOVE SUPREME. If Branford, or any other musician felt that devout, he/she would have written there own music. This is not music to be showcased. It is not "just music." This is John Coltrane paying homage. This is not the Lord's Prayer to be repeated by the masses. This is John Coltrane, the flesh and blood, giving what he could as a man, to his God.

Happy Birthday Theo!

Happy birthday! Thanks for being such an inspiration to your son. -
I've only ever seen that album on the internet, Paul, and it is priced around $30.00. Is this in line with what you got it for?

I'm waiting for TO MY SON to arrive... should be here any day. I'm really looking forward to hearing this one. I've taken my time with the Walt Dickerson recordings. One a year, just about... I listen to them very often. He was playing quick notes back in the New Jazz days, but nothing like he is on VISIONS. What would be a blur of notes in any other hands is a perfectly clear, staccato flutter of sound. My biggest disappointment with that collaboration is that Ra never goes to the electric instruments. I had imagined a more colorful spectrum. I wouldn't start with Visions, or Peace for that matter. I would start with all of the New Jazz discs chronologically, then move toward Steeplechase. Like Larry Young, or John Coltrane, Walt Dickerson's recorded growth and development of a very personal music is just flat out incredible. Enjoy Late. In my opinion, Walt Dickerson's music is some of the most inspirational in my collection. Hell, it inspired me to buy a vibraphone and get to work!

Any plans for Wayne Shorter NIGHT DREAMER? I'm pretty sure this hasn't been remastered in a while...

Artists who recorded mostly later in life...

Fred Anderson was the first person who came to mind. Seems like Kidd Jordan would fit into this category as well. -
Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand

A friend of mine just ordered this from BMG. Apparently there is some sort of audible error on one of the tracks. From the way he describes it, it sounds like something similar to the Hutcherson Dialogue problem... anyone else have a flawed disc? Just curious. Thanks. -
I listened to TOTAL ECLIPSE a couple of times today for the first time in a long while and kept replaying "Total Eclipse" and "Same Shame." Land's sound on those two tracks is phenomenal. There seems to be a lot of reverb on this session. Is it just the digital remix? I was also noticing Chick's touch. Often I could have sworn he was playing an electric piano. Very cool. This is a good album. "Matrix" gets a lot of talk as well. Sounds like I need to find a copy of CIRRUS! (anyone willing to help?) I am listening to the Montreux CD right now! Anything close to this, and with Land, has to be up my alley. I haven't been listening to Hutch much lately and kind of went on a binge recently. I have a real renewed appreciation for his playing, and never even heard before that he was occassionally playing with four mallets. I don't have any other Land recommendations, other than the ones everyon has already given. The Fox is a killer, but is in desperate need of a remaster.

My brother has played with Rene Marie in Richmond, but I haven't heard her. Everyone there tells me she was amazing. I had forgotten. Good of you to bring this up!

Blowing my mind Jim. This really puts into perspective the size of my steps, in comparison. I've got work to do. Thank you! I'd like to come back to you on this some time down the road.

The Circle of Fifths diagram has been incredibly valuable in my learning experience, and has sort of served as a rosetta stone for me when I am sight reading chord changes, or learning a tune. Would you more experienced musicians agree that the circle of fifths is one of the major pieces of the puzzle? Any other pieces that you would hope I have on my music stand? Usually, I have the circle of fifths, the piece of music, and a metronome! Its lonely in the 'shed. Thanks!

You can customize your own tagline?

Leftover Salmon is more my speed. Gotta love the polyethnic slamgrass. BTW, I tried listening to Carnival the other night. Sounded super-cheesy...

I like being a Groove Merchant. I'm not looking forward to becoming a funkateer... I wonder what the secret option is?!

BTW, they do get my vote for worst band name (almost) ever. I think Hoobastank topped them in recent years. Yikes. Check out Carnival. This is one of the first live releases from the band. 1999 I think.

My wife loved them for a while, and I have friends who also love them. I have to be in the right mood, though. I agree that their live CDs kill their studio albums. We've seen them a few times and they do put on a good show. I think SCI is the epitome of the jam band sound, although Phish was always the band that got tagged. Phish was a rock band, first and foremost, whereas SCI really is a fusion of styles, including rock. They never really "rock out" if you know what I mean. They "rock out" the way Weather Report "rocked out." Phish "rocked out!" Dave, have you seen that tower set from the PHISH "IT" DVD?
