  1. Looking for a gig in Wilmington, NC Karl?
  2. organissimo springs to mind.
  3. Love the samples I heard, just can't afford the cd at the moment. Kick-ass record. Yeah. I haven't heard this one in a while. A friend of mine owns it. I bet he NEVER listens to it anymore, and never will... There is an absolutely priceless picture of Stu Martin in it, if I remember. I would love to hear this again...
  4. I don't think they will ever live up to Do You Want More? I try to get into their stuff because Do You Want More? was such an integral part of my high school days. In the same stack with Operation Ivy, Ill Communication (green cassette), etc. Hey World... where did this "backpacker" term come into play? I've seen it before, but I still don't understand the connotation. May be pegging myself as a "backpacker"... oops and oh well.
  5. No one wants to give this a listen?
  6. Many of you may find this music to your liking. I know you've never heard these names before, which is all the more reason to lend am ear. Note, this is not hard-bop derived jazz music.
  7. and Boots of Leather... wow. A powerful trio, to be sure. Possibly the highlight of the evening for me, never having heard them live before. Brian Jones is a force. You can check out more of Brian Jones' work at Slang Sanctuary. I personally own and can recommend Blue Book, duets between Brian Jones and JC Kuhl, and M.A.P. Trio, JC Kuhl, Cameron Ralston, Brian Jones.
  8. p.s. By all accounts, the Fight the Big Bull/Steven Bernstein sets were incredible. I was there for Friday and Saturday nights, and they played again on Wednesday night after many long days in rehearsal and recordings. I'll keep the board posted with a release date from Clean Feed.
  9. The evening was a great success for all involved. Great music. Sold-out attentive audience. Fantastic. The first band, Glows In The Dark, recorded their set. A little short on bass, but here it is for those that are interested. Here is a link to their site, which includes mp3's of the set. Glows In The Dark RVAJAZZFEST Scott Burton (guitar, arrangements) John Lilley (saxophones) Reggie Pace (trombone) Cameron Ralston (bass) Scott Clark (drums) Grab 'em all! Let me know what y'all think...
  10. You feel like a shill? Please!
  11. The Best of Norah Jones
  12. I heard a couple of tracks on the radio yesterday and remembered how much I liked listening to Astral Weeks. This was before I knew who Richard Davis, Connie Kay, Warren Smith were... It would be great if Richard Davis could make the gig in NYC.
  13. "The BDP-83 will be fully universal -- a Profile 2.0 BD deck with SACD, DVD and DVD-Audio support -- and for SACD playback, it will support DSD over HDMI and DSD-to-analog without any PCM conversion. Anticipated price will be between $499 and $599." That price is not very Oppo, is it? They built a great reputation on solid upconverting players at a fraction of the price for the "brand" names. Guess it's time to step up.
  14. No need for blu ray on a 480i 13". Look for a deal on a used player, and sell it or move it to another room when you do upgrade the tv. By then br will be prime time. I've read that 2011 or 2012 is the anticipated year that br becomes the household technology that DVD became. Prices are expected to drop significantly by then. I'm in no rush since my pio elite player looks so amazing. I think it stacks up very well to br, and at 1/4 the cost!
  15. Vinyl or cd? Looking for a sale?
  16. and was Iska's aunt! Wayne's sister's name is Nova? Edit: the vocalist was Iska's aunt. I remember now.
  17. Ah. Thanks! So I'll be asking him for Super Nova then.
  18. I heard this album once about twelve thirteen years ago. I bet my friend who owns it never listens to it anymore. I'm going to make him an offer on it. I remember reading in the liner notes maybe... how emotional the vocalist became during the recording of one of the tunes. Is this the same album?
  19. I bought a Pioneer Elite for $100 on Craigslist about three months ago. Unreal. Upconverts DVDs to look better than cable-fed 1080i, plays SACD, etc. Look for a deal.
  20. I listen to his music often and had no idea he was still alive. Sad to hear he's gone...
  21. Captain, I don't know if you've seen my posts re: Fight The Big Bull, but Steven Bernstein arrived in Richmond this evening and they are about to go into their first rehearsal together. He has brought some new compositions for the band, and Matt White has also written new material for the band with Steven Bernstein specifically in mind. They will be performing as a group on Friday and Saturday night this weekend, and are recording an album together beginning on Saturday afternoon. I have to admit that I have never heard Bernstein play, but I am really looking forward to this weekend.
  22. Fight the Big Bull is: Matt White: guitar, compositions Pinson Chanselle: trap kit Cameron Ralston: bass Brian Jones: percussion Steven Bernstein: trumpet Bob Miller: trumpet Reggie Pace: trombone Bryan Hooten: trombone Jason Scott: saxophone, clarinet John Lilley: saxophone J.C. Kuhl: saxophone
  23. As a reminder, FIGHT THE BIG BULL has an album available through Clean Feed Records. Link to Clean Feed website. They played at The Stone last year during Steven Bernstein's month as curator. They played with Ken Vandermark at The Hungry Brain last year as well. This time around, Steven Bernstein is making the trip down to Richmond. Following the live performances, he will be with the band all week for rehearsals and studio sessions resulting in their second full-length record.
  24. This has been downgraded from an alert to a notification. As suspected, the ALERT have lost their effectiveness due to overuse. DC, MD, VA, NC bring it in.
  25. My Grandfather receives the Mosaic catalog. Not many box sets for his taste in recent years, but he has a few. I'm glad to hear of such a great friendship between neighbors. Most of the folks in my neighborhood seem to keep to themselves. They'll ask what my dog's name is, but not mine. I always find that so strange. So I introduce myself.
