Mosaics that will NEVER be issued
captainwrong replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings of Chet Baker and the Mariachi Brass. -
Funny, I've always been able to "listen around" technical shortcomings in bootleg or pre-tape era recordings.

Game...set...match.

The funny thing is, it was from my old place of employment, meaning if that had come in a few months ago, I probably would have walked out of there with it for a quarter. And I'm doubly surprised my buddy who still works there didn't snag it himself.

Really funny. (except CBS, and now Sony, have the Dennis Wilson albums) -
Rex Lawson - The High Life King in London $4. Not too shabby.

Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music

Contacting the label is the correct thing to do. If you email eMusic, that's what they're going to tell you anyway. From what I understand, it's a little different than a physical record store. They can't just call up Delmark and order the missing titles (though I too wish they could.) Delmark has to send the tracks over. So, giving them a nudge is going to be the only way that'll happen. If you've never been to the message boards, they'll tell you the same over there. And people always get worked up over anything region specific, especially free stuff. Right now, I can point to a dozen or more releases that are UK only that I'd download in a minute, but I understand that's the way it goes sometimes. A lot of eMusic subscribers don't get that. (You should have seen some of the hellfire people outside the US were spitting during the brief time eMusic had the Rolling Stones ABKCO catalog.) -
I have a theory on that, vinyl neophytes don't get that old vinyl doesn't have to look (and sound) like crap. Where I used to work, I'd have arguments with a coworker about pricing vinyl. I'd insist most of it was $1 bin, but he'd price it, not outrageous, but in the $4-8 range. I'd be damned if I didn't watch it walk out the door with customers amazed they were finding the Doors on vinyl or whatever even though the record was common as dirt and maybe VG- or G. I'd rarely see anyone actually pull a record out of the jacket to have a look. Too many people new to this aren't familiar with grading and buy into the whole "it's old, so it's going to be worn" thing. My theory anyway.

Big fire in Universal studios destroyed jazz recordings?

Only more obscure artists from the '40s and '50s? Pshaww! Who cares about that anyway? Hell, they didn't even have ringtones back then, let alone iPods or 20th Century Masters Gold Greatest Hits Repackage #4,857 back then. A friend an I were talking about this a while ago and he stopped me in my tracks when he pointed out that what does it matter if all that stuff burnt up because it's not like UMG has any interest in releasing stuff of that era anyway. It's much more important to fart out another Kiss or Sublime (a band who has more comps than original albums) hits collection than mine the vaults. I had to agree, he had a pretty good point. -
Personally, I feel the material is weakest of the Blue Notes and the guest spots are totally unnecessary. I've listened to this a couple of times, but I can't find much reason to go back to it. Not bad, mind you, but just nothing special.

Oh hell yeah. (After losing a crate of records, and exactly one CD, in a flood last week, I'm becoming gunshy about purchasing physical media again...at least for a little while. )

Good advise, thanks. And I'm still looking for those ribs. Ummm...ribs.
-
Damn, a slab of ribs really sounds good right now.

Recently I had a flood in my basement where my listening room was. My stereo gear was all up high enough that nothing was touched by water, so I think I'm ok. The problem is, it's all in the garage for the time being while things are getting repaired. The garage has a vent in it so it doesn't get too hot in there, but my question is, should I take any additional precautions for my tube gear? I don't know a whole lot about it, but I'm assuming since those suckers get so hot anyway a little higher than normal temperature isn't going to do any damage. But I just need to know if I should pull the tubes and store them somewhere more climate controlled or are they ok where they are?

Jackie McLean fan? Too good to be true bargain?
captainwrong replied to mikelz777's topic in Recommendations
Me too. I wonder what happened. Me three. My guess is, if they're still selling it, someone messed up with the pricing and claiming it's out of stock, never to return and creating a new entry in their system for it is easier than selling however many at a loss. Oh well, just wait six months and it'll probably start showing up at Half Price Books for $20. -
You can check out samples on iTunes. I did and it sounds...weird. Can't put my finger on it, maybe if I didn't know what I was listening to I'd feel differently, but it just has that thing for me like watching a colorized movie. Even though modern ones are leaps and bounds above what they did in the 80s, there's still something a little off about it.

My next question is, since I've had the covers laying out drying near a dehumidifier are they safe once they are totally dry or should I pitch 'em? I'm not using paper inner sleeves, I used the waxy Decca style plastic ones, if that makes a difference.

MONO-PACT! I always wanted to put this on an album cover.

Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music

The music is great, but the fidelity of this album is lacking. Really great headphone, get lost in the vibe, music, then some distortion pulls you right back out. -
Sorry I missed this. I had band practice and with our bass player working on the Lucas Oil stadium, Sunday is the only day we can play.

Big fire in Universal studios destroyed jazz recordings?
captainwrong replied to mmilovan's topic in Discography
to clear up the ownership lineage, as I understand it, Universal Music Group (UMG) a wholly sperate company from NBC/Universal (the film and TV people,) was renting vault space at Universal Studios from NBC/Universal. I didn't understand it either, at first, as I was pretty sure the film side didn't have anything to do with the music side anymore. So, they lost prints, but not negatives. Yeah, my first thought when I read about the fire was I hope they saved the Karloff films! Still, I wonder about a lot of those really old films where the negatives are long gone. What of those? -
Lucky for me, I have a Nitty Gritty cleaner. Unlucky for me, Impulse gatefolds suck up water like a shammy. Thanks for the tips guys. Got the records dried off and in new sleeves. Now I'm trying t dry out as many covers as I can. Some are total loss though (Ayler Holy Ghost, for instance.)

I had a flood last night. Looks like about three inches of water got in. The biggest thing I've lost, so far, is a crate of LPs. Some were in polybags and the ones that didn't leak were fine. The rest are throughly wet. My question is, what can I do about these records at this point? The covers are trashed, I know. But, having seen water damaged records in the wild, I know these things have a tendency to get moldy. I'm assuming my best course at this point is submitting a list to my insurance and hoping for the best, but is there anything I can do to salvage these records at this point, or should I cut my losses and move on? Sorry if this has been asked before. As you can guess, it's been a nerve wracking morning.
