Once upon a time, I was really into collecting all these different mixes of Beatles stuff and obsessing over the little details. Then one day it hit me that I wasn't really listening to the music anymore as much as I was listening to those little details and not much else. Nowadays, I never find the need to listen to the Beatles. During that phase, I managed to completely burn myself out on them, despite having been a lifelong fan. Shame these weren't around 15 years ago, back when I was picking up bootleg CDs at $30+ a pop and all the LPs and 45s I could find. Would have saved me a lot of trouble. And 83 discs of the Let It Be stuff! Good lord, even at my biggest Beatles stage, there's just no way I could have stomached that. Lennon himself made the remark about it being some of the most shittly recorded shit and from what I've heard of it, I'd have to agree. (Well, ok, I've heard worse, but I can't imagine anyone needing to hear days worth of the Fabs aimlessly rehearsing songs and running through covers poorly.)

Crazy world, I managed to inadvertently see Billy Wooten last week. We went to a NPR thing to hear Peter Sagal (host of Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me) speak and there was a dinner before hand. All evening I was looking at the vibe player providing the mood music (with his Yamaha keyboard accompaniment) thinking: "that looks like Billy Wooten." Well, it was. Didn't get a chance to speak to him or anything, but glad to see he's still out there doing it, even if the "it" in this case was some cheesy cocktail hour stuff.

Agreed. It is a good one.

The influence of Cannonball Adderley's post-1965 music on Miles Da
captainwrong replied to Guy Berger's topic in Artists
IIRC, Axe produced most, if not all Cannonball's Capitol albums and on into the Fantasy years. Money In The Pocket, I'm not sure about, but I'm pretty sure Domination he did. I know he did Love, Sex and the Zodiac. -
The first thing that came to mind with this topic was Giant Steps. To this day, I can not listen to the Heavyweight Champion set with out feeling a bit disorientated around those sessions. That LP, patched together as it was, just works for me in a major way. Even hearing those tunes in context with their sessions just sounds weird to me. The thing is, I don't know if that's due to some brilliant programing or just having heard the LP often before the complete sessions. Also, I think Bev has some great thoughts on the whole LP and CD thing in this regard. I was at the tail end of people who grew up with LPs (of course, one could argue there's more new vinyl out there now than there has been for at least 15 years, but I digress) and cassettes as the primary media for music. So, yeah, that whole ebb and flow of a 20 min. per side LP just feels right to me in a way that modern, longer is better, CDs just still haven't felt the same. Though I did notice the Amy Winehouse album does a good job of hitting the points of impact (more notable on the vinyl obviously) to cite a recent example of someone getting it right, IMO.

Buddy Rich discs 5,6 & 7, though I just got Elvin from the UPS man, so I'll probably be throwing that in momentarily. -

And after looking around this board, I seem to be the only person who likes this one. LOL -
Okay, okay...so there are a few minor QC bumps in the road. At least no one has complained about the labels being wrinkled and off center! Maybe someone will get real lucky and their "Blue Trane" will actually play the "trainwreck" session. All kidding aside, Blue Train? Really? Umm...isn't there like an SACD of this already? Screw this noise, I'm going back to my BN 8-track collection.

This is why I love this place. For years, I've been trying to figure out the source of "Funky Butt." I have it on the flip of the Deligates "Convention '74" 45, but I knew there was more to the story than that. Awesome. Man, I got The Soul Brotherhood CD a few months ago and really dig it, so I guess I'll have to track the rest of this session down too.

"Complete In A Silent Way Sessions" $9.99 at iTunes

Miles also $9 at Amazon on download. Apple is known for screwing up box set prices every now and again. Amazon, not so much. -

Duke Pearson Select...two discs of nice Bossa influenced stuff...then disc three comes along. The Xmas stuff, I'm sure I'll dig later, but the easy listening vocal session was more than I could take. However, the first two discs received the rare and coveted wife approval award, so that means something, right? -
FWIW, the last two tracks on the Philly "Jo" Jones album, 2/3 of the Elvin Trio stuff, are bad rips. Boo!

Marva Whitney - It's My Thing (only slightly warped Scorpio reissue...sigh...) Lalo Schifrin - blah...blah...blah...Marquis De Sade (Verve)
-
Batman - The Fantastic Guitars of Dan & Dale (aka Sun Ra and the Blues Image) OG pressing on Tifton. Would be spinning Marva Whitney's Live & Lowdown at the Apollo but the damn Scorpio repressing is warped and will have to go back to the store. Grr....

Can't help you, but the cello album I really dig is Fred Katz - Soul-O Cello. Don't think it's on CD though (and I really need a better copy, mine is beat up.)

the nice thing is, because it's a subscription, you know how much you're spending a month and sometimes you can really get a ton of much if you find albums with long tracks. Of course, you do have to avoid the temptation of the booster pack... -
Just dropped on eMusic: http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Artist...d/11194972.html

How about my personal fave - Art Blakely? Hmm...don't know him, but I have an album featuring Art Blackey. Maybe they're related? Of course, I also had a Charlie Parker album once with someone who looked a lot like Lockjaw Davis on the cover.

It's definitely Elvin and Farrell on those tracks. That's kind of a pleasant surprise. Thanks for the sleuthing!
