  1. It means 130 unhappy customers not 1300. Math never was my strong point.
  2. I saw that too. IIRC, he'd never even heard Jackie before! (I think later he kind of blurred this issue when people were reading him the riot act over his comments.) I'm sorry but yeah, $50 is way out of my "leap of faith" jumping distance. Never mind the fact that there are people there with NO knowledge of jazz at all who are in for the entire subscription at, what, $1250??? Insanity! Reading that board at times makes me want to sell off my stereo, get an iPod dock boombox and be done with it. :rsmile: Oh and the same number prank, heheh.
  3. AFAIK, a seller can still leave retaliatory feedback, for the time being. That said, I've had no qualms about leaving negatives when they were warranted. I feel it's kind of a thing were I'd want someone else who got ripped off to give me a heads up. I've never received a retaliatory negative either and I always figured if I did, I'd just throw a note on it indicating that's what it was. Or, if you're really worried about it, wait until the last day you can leave feedback and hope they forget about you. This eBay thing has me a little miffed though. I think it's completely bunk that, as a seller, I won't be able to warn people about deadbeat bidders anymore (and I've had several) just because some folks have abused the system over legit negatives. Also, not to sound like sour grapes, but if this is the first time you've had issue, and over a minor value item at that, consider yourself very lucky. i stopped buying on eBay for a while as I seemed to hit a patch of things rarely coming as advertised, if they came at all. I've learned the hard way that the megasellers, like you are describing, are so hit or miss as to not be worth my while unless the feedback is 100% positive or damn close to it. 98.7% positive out of 10,000 still means 1,300 unhappy customers. Or at least 1,300 people who weren't afraid to leave negative feedback.
  4. Oh yeah, being a Jimmy McGriff fan I'm real familiar with old Sonny Lester. The problem is, the samples on this stuff sound like bootlegs. That and I really want to know who is playing with Philly Joe and Klook. Maybe when the credits roll over in a week, I'll check them out.
  5. Same here. Really, I've bought very few new records recently that I've been pleased with. It's been to the point where I'm pretty much through with anything I can't inspect myself before purchasing. I'll have to hop over to Hoffman's and see that thread. I'm sure it'll be enough to put me off these issues entirely. (Oh, and I'm not too shocked folks over there purchased subscriptions. There seem to be a lot of people there who will buy anything SH touches, even if they'd never buy a jazz record otherwise. It'd be interesting to see the breakdown on SH forum posters vs. people who don't know anything about the place among the subscribers.) EDIT: good lord, those folks over there are way too forgiving (or is it delusional?) Paying to send these things back and expecting to have to do it more later in the series? Saying you'd pay extra to have some QC performed which should have been done in the first place? WTF? Man, if I'm spending $9 on a Scorpio repressing, I'm not going to be too concerned if it's slightly warped or the cover is crunched on the corner. But for $50, that sucker better be as close to flawless as humanly possible. Sheesh, even back in the 80s I can only think of one time I took a record back for being a bad pressing. Even then, it was $7 not $50.
  6. OK just noticed some new stuff under the LRC banner showing up on eMusic. Kenny Clarke, Nat and Cannonball, Philly Joe...so, anyone know what the story is on these things? It doesn't look like stuff LRC has been recycling before. (At least I haven't seen any of this in the bargain bins I frequent.) All sounds like live stuff, I just have no idea who else is in there and what the story is. Gaah, LRC is a frustrating company. Nat and Cannonball Philly Joe Kenny Clarke Charles Loyd/Gato Barbieri Quartet Chet Baker
  7. Wife got me these for Xmas:

    Cables

Not true! My coat keeps falling off the Monster Cable.
  9. No kidding? That's pretty cool. I've always dug his work with the Chicago soul scene, probably my favorite soul region, if you will. Long before I really knew who he was, I found "A Date with Pate" on King. Struck me as a little lightweight at the time (I was heavy into Roland Kirk at the time) but I hung on to it. I ought to dig that up this afternoon and give it another spin.
  10. Ahh, Johnny Pate. Shaft in Africa is a good record.
  11. Kind of a weird sentiment, though I've played Now for a lot of non-jazz people who loved it.
  12. Sorry to dredge up an oldie, but I was wondering about this track and have been for a while. (I have it on a BGP Acid Jazz Comp.) Are there more tracks from this session? The CD I have has no info about it at all, so this is more than I knew this morning, but I've always wanted to hear more from this group.
  13. Just picked up the Art Pepper Village Vanguard set. Funny, I was thinking about checking some of this out on eMusic and then I stumble across a used copy at a price I couldn't refuse. (I figure if I decide this isn't my bag, I can get out of it what I paid and be happy.) Still, I just bought about 20 OJCs in a panic buying spree, so it may be a while before I get to this one. LOL
  14. *shrugs* This was one of the first LD albums I bought (along with the Scorpion) and, though I haven't listened to it in years, I loved it. Plus, this was my "gateway" to the older LD sides and I used this record to hip a lot of people to jazz, though this record is anything but purist. Nowadays, I'm more likely to throw on Blues Walk if I want some LD. (I really dig Lush Life too, maybe that one straddles the fence for some on this thread?)
  15. I wish they offered the liners for download as I've snagged a bunch of this stuff from eMusic. Oh well. And you guys have made me want to download the rest of the Baby Dodds album just to see what the deal is (I only grabbed the Talking & drums part.)
  16. Question for those of you with the Elys 2, was there a break in period and how long? I've had mine a couple of weeks and frankly, I think this sucker is quite harsh on the top end. Not on every platter, but on some where I didn't feel that way with my old tt/cart set up (Philips 212/Grado Green.)
  17. Lionel Hampton Contemporary C3502
  18. OK, can I add James Brown's smoooookin' version of "Something." IIRC, this was a b-side and hasn't appeared on an album. If you like the Dave Matthews era JB sound you owe it to yourself to track this one down. (I think JB had never heard the song before cutting it. He does get a little out with the lyrics in the way only JB can. LOL) Also, Carmen McRae does a neat-o "Got To Get You Into My Life."
  19. Just got the AC/DC vinyl box set to replace my old beat up Atlantics. Currently spinning '74 Jailbreak, just because it was first out of the box.
  20. In case anyone cares, In this World is pretty cheesy. Very different vibe, kind of tires to be a concept album of some sort and just lays it on thick. I think I've listened to it two or three times and put it away. Lost Tapes has some good stuff, but they would have done better to add the Wooden Glass tracks as bonus and put the others on In this World. I can't recommend it for the price, as it's about half good stuff. While I like Wooden Glass, I don't think it's worth the stupid amounts of money the original pressings go for. In fact, I'd say it's kind of hard to justify at the P-Vine reissue price unless you're really into the vibes and the rare groove thing. If it was a domestic pressing, I'd say no brainer. (Interesting side story, I heard through the grapevine that Billy had taken to harassing a local (I'm in Indy) record dealer who had become known as a pretty reliable source for Wooden Glass vinyl. To the best of my knowledge, the guy was just selling records he'd bought, wasn't bootlegging or anything, but when Billy found out this guy was getting $800 for that LP, he started demanding a cut. Don't know what that was about, but hopefully the dude is getting a cut of the CD sales anyway.)
  21. Jackie McLean - Strange Blues. Buddy gave me this LP years ago and I don't think I've ever had it on the turntable. And, nuff respect to Ray Draper for what he did, but I just can't get into the tuba. The Mal Waldron tracks are nice though.
  22. Should the same apply to the Bill Evans set? Not worth the time? I don't know. I'm certainly curious because I enjoy Evans work with Ogerman. OTOH, I've yet to read a good review of this album anywhere. In fact, IIRC, even Evans disliked it. Seems like this album was supposed to have been released in the VBR series a few years ago and then was dropped without a word. Long time since I heard it, but IIRC VIPS is pretty much Bill Evans making a Roger Williams type easy listening LP. Strictly a cash run, wasn't even released on Verve as to separate it from his jazz work. Very little to distinguish it as a Bill Evans album, which is why I'm kinda shocked they decided to put it out on CD. Are we finally at the bottom of the barrel, Verve? LOL
  23. John Coltrane Heavyweight Champion Box.
  24. They're both grandfathered in at the old rates, which is why I'm so reluctant. But, damnit, I just have more music than I know what to do with. It's so hard though when there's so much good stuff there to be had.
