  1. I bought most of my really out Trane discs at BB. Either there or Borders. Ahh...the pre-internet days.
  2. Funny this should come up. I was just listening to this set the other day and ended up blogging about it, which turned into a rant about how I bought this set in '95 at BEST BUY! Good lord, I was in there the other day looking for one of the new Jutta Hipp RVG, which I thought they might have being as how it was Blue Note, and the jazz section was pathetic. Once upon a time, the Best Buy near my house was my source for jazz discs and if they didn't have it, Borders would for sure. Now, I don't even bother. It's straight to Amazon or a dozen others because no one caries squat anymore. But yeah...sorry for the derail. I never thought it would be remarkable that I bought this at Best Buy, but 13 years later, it really is.
  3. Don't have anything to add here, just catching up on this thread, but did want to say I love that Milford album. I haven't heard the second, but the first is a favorite. I've been playing for 20+ years and I can't wrap my head around much of what he's doing on that disc.

    Jutta Hipp

I need to hear this at least since I bought the shirt with the cover art last week. LOL
  5. Those samples sound really weird. Like half of them don't even sound like Wes, at least not the tone I associate with him. And there's flute...maybe a clue?
  6. The only problem I had with that set was WEA had already released a lot of those tunes in similarly themed comps in 2003, I think. Granted, those were in the UK, but there was too much duplication for me to justify that set.
  7. Against my better judgment, I bought three Mosaic Select sets today. Found them used at about the last place in town I'd ever think to look for such a thing. Picked up Randy Weston, Duke Person ($35/each) and Cooper/Shank ($19). It wasn't a huge savings, but they had a buy five get one deal and the wife had some DVDs she wanted, so it evened out. I don't even know if the Cooper and Shank set is my bag, but for $19, what the shit?
  8. Lou Donaldson - Musty Rusty (hot damn tamale! This LP smokes!!!)
  9. Vinyl: Originals: Elvin Jones - At the Lighthouse Three Sounds - Three Moods Eric Kloss - We're Going Up Eric Kloss - Life Force Various - A Tribute to John Coltrane/Blues for Coltrane (McCoy, Pharoah, David Murray, etc.) Don Sebesky - Rape of El Morro Philly Joe Jones - Philly Mignon (sigh) Art Farmer - Homecoming Scorpio reissues: Joe Chambers/Larry Young - Double Exposure Jimmy Castor - It's Just Begun (red wax) New: Marva Whitney with Osaka Monaurail - I Am What I Am CD: Booker Ervin - Texbook Tenor Larry Young - Lawrence of Newark Rolling Stones - Between the Buttons & December's Children (hybrid SACD both) *whew*
  10. So, can just anyone call up EMI and get the Blue Train, Something Else, Moanin', Cool Strutting, etc., masters shipped over? Isn't this going to be at least the second vinyl reissue in '08 for some of these titles? And aren't there still "audiophile" versions of these records avaliable? Inquiring minds...
  11. Double Exposure - Joe Chambers/Larry Young
  12. Interesting Mix magazine article about this subject here: http://mixonline.com/recording/mixing/audi...ling/index.html
  13. You are correct. He was back with Ludwig sometime in the 70s, then off to a restored set of Radio Kings that he played until the end. His endorsement history is kind of interesting because inspite of being very demanding on his equipment, he was of the mind that he'd play anyone's drums if they met his endorser's fee. (I read this in the Grestch book. Fred Grestch was interested in bringing Buddy on, but when he explained that Grestch, at the time, didn't pay any of their endorsers, the talks were over.) Of course, this also lead to some interesting situations as Buddy was kind of know for playing other's snares even when he was officially with a different company. Specifically, I think he played a Fibes snare lot of the time in the late 60s/early 70s. Sometimes in the pictures you can tell as Fibes had a rather distinctive throw-off. I'd also read a story about Buddy hooking Krupa up with a Rodgers Dyna-Sonic that looked as close to a Slingerland as one could get. When Bud Slingerland found out about that, Krupa switched back out of respect and loyality.
  14. Freddy is supposed to be playing the Indy Jazz fest this year. They're promising he'll show this year. LOL We'll see.
  15. Main thread. The others seem to have fallen off the radar. When do people over there have time to listen to their precious albums with as much posting as they do? LOL
  16. Didn't see that. Dang. And people are still psyched about this series??? Of course it is cracking me up that people are starting "should I buy album x or y?" polls. Part of me wants to be happy people are getting into jazz, but the realist in me knows they're not getting into jazz at all. They're only buying these things to satisfy a collecting fetish and/or because these feature Steve Hoffman's magic "breath of life." OTOH, if people are getting what they're asking for the records from the Fantasy 45rpm series, I guess it's a safe investment anyway. This whole thing just makes me chuckle.
  17. IIRC, they made a note about something to the effect of VIPs being an easy listening album and not fitting the scope of the set. Seems to me if you put in a million alternates from From Left to Right (kinda easy listening, IMHO) they coulda shoehorned this in as well and really been "complete." Also, I picked up the Village Gate Jimmy Simth set on vinyl over the weekend. Quite a nice little album. Actually, I like the other Smith Metro LP I got Sunday (Incredible!/Live in Hamburg) a little better, but this is a nice one to have out on CD. I only wish my LP played as nice as it looks.
  18. And available digitally on CDs as well for that matter. (I hate how common it's becoming to use digital and download interchangeably. CDs are digital too, after all.)
  19. must be the most expensive storage problem in the world. you know ... looking at three pieces of cake makes you hungry but looking at three million pieces of cake makes you ... sick. Indeed. I've been following this story for a while. I'm really skeptical about the value and quality of this collection. This guy has been trying to sell it for about four years now. Long story short, he's had a couple legit offers which fell through or didn't meet his standards for the amount he wanted for it (he started asking $25 million and turned his nose up at the Library of Congress' $12 mil offer) now he can't give it away for the "bargain" price of $3 million (this was the second shot on eBay.) The dude wrote price guides, delt in remainders and cut-outs and has been kind of cagey about letting people see the computerized inventory lists. Color me skeptical about this being the greatest music collection in the world.
  20. Wow, I've never seen Buddy clowning before. WTF?
  21. The dancers in that clip have absolutely no concept how to dance to that. LOL
  22. Same here.
