  1. How was "My Father's Place" their club? For some reason I had the impression it was their club. It wasn't? That would be a BIG negatory. I used to go there a lot during my late teens. Saw BOC there when they were still called Soft White Underbelly.
  2. FFA said they recorded HMBB at "their club". The live tracks on that album were recorded at My Father's Place in Roslyn, Long Island.
  3. How was "My Father's Place" their club?
  4. Mr. Brecker's solo albums are in a totally different class than the stuff he did with his bro.
  5. I've occasionally tried to get into what many consider their masterpiece, Heavy Metal Be-Bop, over the years. Still no luck, I'm afraid.
  6. I have the first pressing of the Miles Prestige Albums set. It uses the mini-lp packaging. Maybe when they changed for succeeding pressings, they put these in jewel cases? I know they went from a longbox version (which I have) to what looks like a cube.
  7. He could produce your album, and you could produce or direct his next flick!
  8. Good luck with that!
  9. The Pop Markets in general have a considerably nicer presentation, although lots have problems with the "mysterious" white borders that appear around the cover pictures. Btw, there's usually nothing wrong with the mastering on those early OJCCD's. If yuo don't already have most of the albums, buying those Euro boxes is a cheap way to go.
  10. Can anyone comment on the following: 1. What is included and how is it included (all bonus cuts and multiple alt taks or at the end)? I am asking because I have a few of the older ojcs. 2. Sound quality or mastering (not to get all Hoffman on this point but curious nonetheless)? Thanks much for any guidance. If it's like the other sets in this series, it contains EXACT copies of the OJC cd's released in the States in the late 80s and early 90s by Fantasy. The cd's are enclosed in cheap mini-lp sleeves that, incidentally, are NOT exact replicas of the original lp sleeves.
  11. No matter to me. Whatever he does from here on out is gravy. I worship the guy for pitching the Game 6 shutout gem to close out the hated Jankees in the 2003 WS!
  12. Me, Chaz Parker, Dinah Washington, Michael Jackson, Rebecca DeMornay (same year) all share the agony of being Virgos born on the same day.
  13. Based on the pricing where the 9 disc Duke set costs more than the 10 disc Satch set, I would guess that the Duke albums are newly remastered. The reason the 6 disc Monk set is so cheap is because Sony merely repackaged the older Orrin Keepnews produced versions of the 6 albums. It seems obvious that the Bessie, Satch and Christian sets are just repackagings.
  14. Were you there same time as David Axelrod? I have two friends who went there ca. 1969-73. Actually I attended with Monk! Seriously though, '73 was a little before my time. I'm joining the club that you and Joel belong to tomorrow. I graduated in its 75th anniversary year -- 1979. They can -- or at least that's the result we hope for. On the other hand, 4 years ago my son's 6th grade (female) music teacher got canned for posting and sending nude pics of herself to an 8th grade female student.
  15. Since these are replications of previously issued cd's, I find it hard to believe that these have been remastered.
  16. I like this stuff, but I feel like I'm watching "Fat Albert" with my eyes closed.
  17. Sort of looks like Bob Mintzer of Yellowjackets fame!
  18. I agree, but teaching is a tough vocation reserved for the very few. My local school was Long Island City High School, where teachers were (rightly) only concerned with getting out alive. At the time I would have attended, they brought in a disciplinarian to serve as Principal. From what I heard, he wasn't afraid to throw down with anyone who stepped out of line. On a side note, didn't Cuccurullo serve as guitarist for Duran Duran for a while? Btw, wiki states that he worked in porn in the early 00's!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Cuccurullo
  19. I'd love to know what Mr. McCourt was like as a teacher! He was a happy-go-lucky guy who went the extra mile to help his students (including me). And yes, he was somwhat legendary around the sacred halls of Stuy High, at least while I was there. Students would often go out of their way to call out his name from across a crowded corridor during class changes, and he always acknowledged the attention. Thanks! I'm gonna read Teacher--or whatever it's called---next. I couldn't put Angela's Ashes down. No problem, Joel. As I said earlier, nobody had a clue that he was destined for fame. Many teachers at Stuy were just as friendly, helpful and qualified as McCourt. Just one of the things that set the school apart. I was extremely happy to spend 3 of my formative years there (as opposed to spending them at the prison that was my local high school).

  21. I don't think that adds up, Ubu. Hip-o Select hasn't released a jazz boxed set since the Wes Montgomery one, almost a year ago, so it's getting less active if anything. The Chick Webb set under discussion is Universal material, which suggests Mosaic is still getting that material. And the Granz Jam Sessions set came out years before Hip-o Select was conceived. But a Hip-o/Mosaic merger could indeed be fine. With Cuscuna in control, the mastering would probably be more Mosaic-inclined, while we would get more compact/attractive packaging. I don't ever think we'll see Cuscuna supervising Hip-O Select products. Hip-O Select plugs along. Don't forget the final Coltrane box set. Coming soon is a two cd Symphony Hall Concert set. And I bet more are planned. Well, Cuscuna does have some history producing the Impulse 20 bit digipak cd's mastered by Labson, so he does have a connection. But I think you're right. He and Hip-O probably will never merge.
  22. He was one of my high school English teachers back in the 70s, well before his success as a writer. At the time, his brother Malachy was a well-known soap opera actor and bar owner in NYC. Who knew that Frank would go on to bigger and better things?
  23. As I am a huge supporter of Mosaic, I was NOT holding it against them. I've had this discussion many times with Scott. The legal difficulties involved in a such a scenario make doing this almost impossible, especially in this day and age. This could change (or become even more difficult) if UMG (owner of Decca) becomes the owner of EMI (owner of Blue Note, which as I understand it, is part owner of Mosaic itself). It's a shame really that Mosaic does not have at its disposal the legal team necessary to resolve such issues for the good of the music. But then again, it's rarely about the music with large record companies these days.
  24. I looked this up too. He also recorded 6 tracks for Decca in 1935 if i'm not mistaken. Does Mosaic ever do combined Universal(Decca) and Sony/BMG sets? They try not to. Gee, grow up! As I scratch my head, I'm wondering what you thought I meant.
